Public Option Action Pledge

The healthcare crisis in America is serious and 14,000 Americans lose their insurance every single day. But news reports show right-wing front groups are funding attempts to disrupt congressional townhalls and drown out the voices of mainstream Americans who are calling for real reform.

We, the undersigned, will not be silenced. We commit to four rules of engagement throughout the month of August:

1. We will not disrupt meetings or engage in shouting matches with a screaming right-wing mob.

2. We will stand up and tell our personal healthcare stories in a call for real reform.

3. We will not stay home and let the Republican fringe dominate the airspace.

4. We will contact our members of Congress and demand they draw a line in the sand in support of a public healthcare option.

Background:

The Right-Wing Scream Machine is back.

As reported by TalkingPointsMemo.com, here's an outline of their tactics from a recently circulated right-wing plan:

"pack the hall... spread out" to make their numbers seem more significant, and to "rock-the-boat early in the Rep's presentation...to yell out and challenge the Rep's statements early.... to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda...stand up and shout and sit right back down."

Who are they?

- So called "Birthers" who think President Obama's birth certificate is a fake.

- "Teabaggers" who don't want to pay taxes for schools, police, or roads.

And they're backed up by insurance industry and right-wing funded front groups who are encouraging Republicans to disrupt healthcare townhalls anyway they can throughout August.

Their goal isn't to debate or get their voices heard. Their goal is to stop us at any cost.

It's up to us to make sure they don't drown out America's support for the choice of a public healthcare option. It's equally important that we aren't drawn into their divisive tactics and discredit our broad-based bipartisan support for real reform.
