Another Memoir
Ricardo Sanchez, the former commander of coalition forces in Iraq, has written a book and it looks like he has some scores to settle. From the Washington Post:
In an attempt to exculpate himself, Sanchez casts blame widely. He accuses the Bush administration of "gross incompetence and dereliction of duty," not to mention "the cynical use of war for political gains." His fellow generals are blamed for "disastrous decisions," such as not providing "proper training and guidance" to the troops and refusing "to send the help we requested."
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was guilty of "micromanaging his generals," and then, after it was apparent that things had gone wrong, claiming that he "knew nothing" about key decisions. Franks pursued a "strategically flawed" strategy, trying to reduce the number of U.S. troops to 30,000 by the fall of 2003. Bremer was "part of the problem" because he refused Sanchez's advice on a variety of matters, such as the need to accelerate the deployment of Iraqi troops and to scale back de-Baathification.

DNC chair lauds diversity
Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said last week in the Marvin Center that Republicans have turned away minorities with their stances on immigration and civil rights issues.

- Iraqi artists and singers flee amid crackdown on forbidden culture
By Susan Rowe on May 12, 2008 4:43 PMIraqi artists and singers flee amid crackdown on forbidden culture
by Afif Sarhan in Baghdad and Caroline Davies
Iraqi singers, actors and artists are fleeing the country after dozens have been killed by Islamic radicals determined to eradicate all culture associated with the West.
Cinemas, art galleries, theatres, and concert halls are being destroyed in grenade and mortar attacks in Basra and Baghdad.
According to the Iraqi Artists' Association, at least 115 singers and 65 actors have been killed since the US-led invasion, as well as 60 painters. But the terror campaign has escalated in recent months as both Shia and Sunni extremists grow ever bolder in enforcing religious restrictions on the citizens of Iraq.
Those remaining are in hiding as they make preparations to get themselves and their families to safety. ...more: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/may/11/iraq
Dems havn't carried that state in awhile. Even with overwhelming dems support for both Al Gore and Kerry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dems haven't carried WV since 2000, lol! WV voted for Clinton both times.
In fact, the last two times (and ONLY times) WV voted for a loser were in 1876 and 1880.
Where is all this misinformation about WV coming from?
The national media! They're good at it!!
They knew absolutely Michigan would have a re-do when everyone here in Michigan knew differently.
Despite a hard push by Democrats, who have claimed West Virginia's presidential vote in all but three elections over the past 50 years, George W. Bush won this state's five electoral votes.
I heard about the birds getting sucked in -- now I'm a solar fan -- but this article says wind could produce as much electricity as that provided by nuke today or one fifth of our electricity.
=================
I wouldn't worry about it - probably rumors spread by the oil companies. More cars kill more birds in one hour than wind turbines kill in a year.
The exhaust gas from power plants kill a lot of birds in flight too.
I don't hear anyone talking about not driving cars, or cutting their power off.
Found this article that hopefully puts an end to the bird-wind turbine war. So if you really care about birds then stop destroying their habitat, stop driving, turn the lights off unless you have a wind turbine, live in a cave, don't use cell phones or watch tv, no chemical yard sprays, keep your cat inside, and destroy all smoke stacks. They all kill more birds then wind turbines.
http://www.awea.org/faq/sagrillo/swbirds.html
[snip]
By far, the largest causes of mortality among birds include loss of habitat due to human infringement, environmental despoliation, and collisions with man-made objects. Since wind turbines fall into the last category, it is worthwhile to examine other human causes of avian deaths and compare these to mortality from wind turbines.
Death by….
Utility transmission and distribution lines: 130 to 174 million bird deaths a year in the U.S.
Collisions with automobiles and trucks result in the deaths of between 60 and 80 million birds annually in the U.S
Tall building and residential house windows:the best estimates put the toll due collisions with these structures at between 100 million and a staggering 1 billion deaths annually
Lighted communication towers : Current mortality estimates due to telecommunication towers are 40 to 50 million birds per year.
Agricultural pesticides are "conservatively estimated" to directly kill 67 million birds per year
Cats, both feral and housecats: The most reasonable estimates indicate that 39 million birds are killed in the state each year
engines, smoke stacks, bridges, and any number of other human structures and activities are responsible for one to four million bird deaths per day!
tCommercial wind turbines: The total annual mortality was estimated at approximately 6,400 bird fatalities per year for all species combined
I knew that stuff about wind turbines was 99.9% hype for every wiid turbine that goes up, it will be a net gain for bird populations.
We also have to remember that pesticides and other forms of pollution are by-products of oil refining.
"This is not news, as bird collisions with lighted television and radio towers have been documented for over 50 years. Some towers are responsible for very high episodic fatalities. One television transmitter tower in Eau Claire, WI, was responsible for the deaths of over 1,000 birds on each of 24 consecutive nights. A "record 30,000 birds were estimated killed on one night" at this same tower.7 In Kansas, 10,000 birds were killed in one night by a telecommunications tower.8 Numerous large bird kills, while not as dramatic as the examples cited above, continue to occur across the country at telecommunication tower sites. "
http://www.awea.org/faq/sagrillo/swbirds.html
==============
That is remarkable more birds killed on one communication tower in one night, than all present wind turbine in the entire country kill in a whole year...and the MSM never reports those, they only hype the wind turbine story, while their own industry does this.
A big reason Repubs are on the run everywhere is Dean's 50 state campaign. Sure, the Repub party is in the sewer, but they have been there for years. Dems have a great candidate in Obama who is bringing new voters to the scene. Dems are forcing Repubs to defend everywhere and this is because Dean is building the grassrooots and making them defend everywhere. He is forcing Repubs to spend money they don't have in areas they never had to worry in before. Great job Howard.
That's a good point - there is a world of difference between finding common ground in the red states, on one hand, and appeasing the right wing by moving to the center-right. One needs to make that distinction.
Barack Obama coming to Grand Rapids Wednesday!
Who: Barack Obama
What: Campaign Rally
When: Wednesday, 7:00PM
Where: Van Andel Arena, downtown GR
"You don't win in the fall without carrying Michigan," Levy said.
The Obama appearance here signals his pivot toward the national campaign against presumptive GOP nominee John McCain, whose appeal to independent voters could make him competitive in a state that has not gone Republican since 1988.
Come on down to downtown GR and get fired up!!
Yes, big states are critical in winning the electoral college, yet ALL states count :-)
Not all wind power needs to come from wind farms. There are buildings with wind power being built into them. Will bbl w/ a link.
Nice to see both party's conventions are gearing up for green. I always go green for my meetings. I have been practicing my answer to "what do you mean there is no bottled water?" which I am bound to hear several times this week. When I tell them why, they stop pouting. Well, the non-spoiled ones do. Saves us money, too :)
from dems with strong spines like darcy burner of washington, [dfa's own] donna edwards of maryland, and 8 others.....'a responsible plan to end the war in iraq' is posted at www.responsibleplan.com.
criticism from the other end of the spectrum is joseph j collins' report, entitled 'choosing war: the decision to invade iraq and its aftermath,' which is posted at www.ndu.edu/inss/Occasional_Papers/OP5.pdf.
here's hoping this post takes.
Denise, just saw your informative post on that a few threads back. Well done!
