Republican Infighting of Biblical Proportions

Written by: DFA Staff on May 13, 2008 3:48 PM

Bob Novak is a horrible and foul human being, but he consistently gets some of the best Republican gossip around.  In his most recent column, he reports on the possibility of some strange plot between Mike Huckabee and Christian conservatives to let Barack Obama win the presidency as punishment from God:

An element of the Christian community is not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regards the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as ''God's candidate'' running for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course.

...

Nevertheless, reports out of the evangelical community dispute Huckabee's support. One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me Huckabee in personal conversation with him embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve. That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals, that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy.

- Kerry on Repus sliming Obama

By dog soldier on May 13, 2008 6:04 PM

Kerry really did a good job of defending Obama

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-kerry/more-gop-lies-about-barac_b_101561.html

[snip]

We deserve better in this country, but we won't get it from the GOP in this election. Already we've seen John McCain trying to describe Barack Obama as Hamas' candidate. That's beneath the John McCain I used to know. But -- sadly -- that is the only way these Republicans have to try and win an election

We deserve better. We need to have an honest and important conversation about how to reorient our foreign policy to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

What we don't need are lies, distortions, and rhetoric designed only to whip up fear. That's part of what got us into this mess, and it won't get us out.

Call Sen. McCain's office at 202-224-2235 and ask him to condemn these statements from his supporters.

- The need to stop attacking each other

By * cChalfonte* on May 13, 2008 6:16 PM

To reduce the risk of creating the kind of divisions that afflicted Democrats during my campaigns, here is a proposal that I hope Senators Clinton and Obama and our party will consider.

After today’s vote in West Virginia, the two candidates should agree to make joint visits to the sites of the five remaining primaries (in Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Montana and South Dakota).

During these visits, Senators Clinton and Obama should agree not to criticize each other. They would simply state what each would do if elected president. They would also point out why President Bush’s policies have failed and why they would continue to fail under John McCain.

After each candidate speaks for 15 minutes or so, they would then be taken to a reception where citizens paying $50 a ticket would mingle with the two candidates. The money raised would go to the state Democratic Party to assist local and state candidates in the fall elections.

The two candidates should also visit the two disputed states, Michigan and Florida. No matter what happens to the delegations from those states, their voters are entitled to see and to hear these two historic candidates.

This is an agenda that could unite our party and prepare us for a successful convention with a big victory in November. It would also be a refreshing and welcome change for American presidential politics.

George McGovern, a former senator from South Dakota, was the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee.

I don't see that happening and I really don't think it advisable until AFTER the nomination. The Clintons are not trustworthy in this election so it would only serve to rev up more diversity than anything else.

By Phil Specht on May 13, 2008 6:22 PM

pretty hard to assert that you can rationalize a war in Iraq to bring Universal Human Rights to those under Sadam's heavy hand and then deny them to humans here in our midst

are they Universal or conditional, which is it?

I kind of thought Runnymeade settled that issue for Western Civilization

- Rally 'round Rove?????

By Huron John on May 13, 2008 6:29 PM

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/analysis/290

I'm always looking for something that can unite Democrats. Need I look further than Karl Rove? Could he be our surrogate uniter, as George W. Bush prepares to ride off (in a helicopter) into the Texas sunset and the history books?

Karl Rove is among the most culpable of Bush Administration insiders. Pretty much everyone gives him credit or blame for bringing the Bush administration into power in 2000 (not by himself, granted), and for keeping Bush there in 2004. So what's on Karl's plate now?

1. Well, Valerie Plame is still saying Karl Rove was involved in outing her as a CIA agent in order to smear her husband Joe Wilson when he dared to punch holes in the administration's rationale for the Iraq war (WMDs). Here's a report on her effort to appeal that case, keeping Karl in the proverbial hot seat:

Ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame has begun an attempt to resurrect a lawsuit against officials in the Bush administration, among them Vice-President Dick Cheney.
She accuses them of plotting to leak her identity in retaliation for her husband's criticism of Iraq war policy.

2. Another legal nightmare for Karl concerns the ongoing scandal regarding the politicization of the US attorneys and the Department of Justice. That's the scandal that rid Washington of Alberto Gonzales, of course.

Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman thinks Rove helped railroad him into a jail sentence. As Dan Froomkin wrote last week in The Washington Post:

"On the subject of the possibly politically-motivated prosecution of a former Democratic official, for instance, [Karl Rove]'s been all over the media, vaguely denying involvement. There is, however, one thing that Rove avoids at all cost: being forced to answer a direct question -- especially under oath."

Ben Evans writing for AP last week explained:

"Committee Democrats are investigating whether Rove and Republican appointees at the Justice Department influenced Siegelman's prosecution to kill his chances for re-election. It is part of a broader inquiry into whether U.S. attorneys were fired for not aggressively pursuing cases against Democrats."
What Karl Rove Fears Most (Washington Post)

Ben Evans' May 13 article indicates Karl now has decided he is willing to answer the Judiciary Committee's questions in writing, but he still balks at direct questioning or being sworn in under oath before Congress.
Why does that trouble you, Karl? Are you afraid of the House Judiciary Committee and Rep. John Conyers?

- Racist Incidents Give Some Obama Campaigners Pause

By Fred from Oregon on May 13, 2008 5:44 PM

...The contrast between the large, adoring crowds Obama draws at public events and the gritty street-level work to win votes is stark. The candidate is largely insulated from the mean-spiritedness that some of his foot soldiers deal with away from the media spotlight.

...The bigotry has gone beyond words. In Vincennes, the Obama campaign office was vandalized at 2 a.m. on the eve of the primary, according to police...

I hope they left that office that way for a few days. That whole community needs to be able to see their shame.

Americans need to awake-up to what is happening in their own neighborhoods and being allowed to continue in their own public and chartered school systems. Please know the folks who sit on your local school board(s) and who or what got them elected. Pay close attention to those who are being elected and re-elected as your County's Sheriff, District Attorney and Supervisors. There is wisdom and truth in the saying, "all politics is local".

I dearly love my home state of Indiana but there are still some things about it and about it's history that no Hoosier or any American should be proud of.  When you make a mistake it's a good practice to admit the error, apologize and correct it.  To do so is a sign of maturity.  It is wise to know about the good and to also know about the bad. IMHO political operatives need to stop their immoral and unethical practices of digging up old hatchets during elections just to win and start learning how to bury them publicly instead. All the 9/11 fear propaganda from the Bush Administration and the corporate media has brought out a lot of what was once whispered during 'polite' political conversations while at business meetings, at the local garden club, on the golf course, at private cocktail parties, before and after Sunday services or during family reunions while the children over look old picture albums. All children learn early and are rather intuitive in their nature as to what is important to their survival within their community and their family unit. The prejustice of bigtory and the unknown fears that causes it is not limited to just race, gender and class. A human should always be encouraged to conquer the animal and warlike nature in itself.  No knowing person should ever allow anybody's mean-spirited ignorance to take advantage of their good nature or the human innocence within their communities. It is an noble act to stand up against the tyranny of fear and do the right thing even when doing so doesn't feed your own stomach's ego.

Solar-powered capital punishment

Nothing like starting out the day with a good death penalty joke.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared Tuesday at a conference on alternative energy in Irvine co-hosted by the University of California, Irvine, the Milken Institute and New Majority California, a group of wealthy moderate Republicans who have donated to the governor.
Schwarzenegger explained how he is trying to bring Democrats and Republicans together.

"So this is why to make sure of that I proposed something entirely new, which is to have a solar-powered electric chair," Schwarzenegger said, provoking laughter. "There's something in there for both parties so everyone can be happy. See, this is how I get things together."  ...full article: http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/capitolalertlatest/012543.html

- Obama on C-Span attacking McCain issues

By Joan In Florida on May 13, 2008 8:03 PM

I hope you all saw Obama's speech ending about a half hour ago on C-Span. The only time he mentioned HRC was in answer to a question.

He is already beginning to hit harder at the core of the differences between himself and McCain.

I find it hard to believe that there will be anything at all that McSane or his surrogates can render up to voters other than personally attacking Obama and that just won't work this time.

Norah O'Donnell just said according to the exit polls that Barack Obama has a *problem*. Excuse me, doesn't Hillary have a problem? Look at the victories Obama won - NE, ID, UT, WA, ME, VA, MD, KS -- all with huge victory margins. The Obama people need to address this STAT. Yes, he's the nominee but don't let the media perpetuate this false narrative. There are racists in this country but there are also misogynists.

I'm an Italian-American from Newark, NJ, so I understand. Went through many changes growing up and throughout my life. After 9/11 two motorists called the cops, who stopped me, because I was wearing a respirator mask (for my MCS condition.) The police were understanding, but had to follow protocol and file a report nonetheless.

It was the paranoia after 9/11 that scared me as much as the day itself. The flags flying everywhere told me people were looking for revenge and calling it patriotism. In the mob hysteria, I was afraid the revenge would be imposed on the wrong people. And that's exactly what happened. I understand why Obama doesn't like flaunting flag lapel. "United We Stand" was Chicken Little language for following Bush.
