Why did blue-chip Goldman take a walk on subprime's wild side?
By Greg Gordon | McClatchy Newspapers
Goldman Sachs was one of the last Wall Street giants to enter the subprime lending world, but when it did, it quickly climbed into bed with profligate, highflying firms — companies such as New Century Financial Corp. » read more

The "I Didn't Do It" Culture
Social Decay in America
By JOHN STANTON
~~~
Perhaps the “I Didn’t Do It” philosophy is the American Way.
What kind of country spends $1.5 trillion on national security every year—and growing-- but has to debate whether to spend $900 billion to make basic healthcare available to all citizens. The nation’s human capital—as the Unaccountable Elite like to say—has to be viewed as part of the overall critical infrastructure of the USA.
It's Time to Rebuild Our Passenger Railroad System
By James Howard Kunstler, Chelsea Green Publishing
The following is from the foreword of Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service by James McCommons (Chelsea Green, 2009).
The world economic fiasco, which I call "The Long Emergency," may be speeding us into a future of permanent nostalgia in which anything that is not of the present time looks good
Factory Farms Write Business Model into State Constitution
Bret Thompson
Issue 2, the brainchild of corporate agribusiness, passed today. Issue 2 backers spent at least 40 times more than their opposition, a coalition of farmer, consumer and environmental groups known as Ohio ACT (Ohio Against Constitutional Takeover).
Natalie Kee, a spokesperson for Ohio ACT, stated, “Issue 2’s passage proves that money plays too large a role in public policy. We will be keeping the closest eye possible to make sure the ‘safe, local food’ that Ohio voters were promised becomes a reality. We will be watching.”
Warren Taylor, owner of Snowville Creamery, summed up the vote saying, “This loss shows that a multi-million dollar greenwashing campaign can buy a place in the Ohio Constitution. I fear for the future of small, sustainable, family farms.”
A War That Can’t Be Won
Starts with candy, ends in napalm
By Serge Halimi
Barack Obama once described the operations in Afghanistan as a “necessary war”. That war has lasted eight years and General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of the US forces there, appointed by Obama, is urging him to deploy 40,000 more troops.
Noam Chomsky: No Change in US 'Mafia Principle'
by Mamoon Alabbasi
As civilised people across the world breathed a sigh of relief to see the back of former US president George W. Bush, top American intellectual Noam Chomsky warned against assuming or expecting significant changes in the basis of Washington's foreign policy under President Barack Obama.
~~~
"There is basically no significant change in the fundamental traditional conception that we if can control Middle East energy resources, then we can control the world," explained Chomsky.

When Is It Legitimate For The Oppressed To Take Up Arms?
By Arundhati Roy - Al Jazeera
We meet Arundhati Roy, the Indian writer and activist. For years she has been known as one of the world's most vocal advocates of freedom and social justice. She has earned the wrath of her fellow countrymen for her vehement criticism of India's nuclear weapons.
Roy is against the development of nuclear weapons without regard to the lives of the poor, and the refusal to grant Kashmir independence. She has called the US-led war in Afghanistan "another act of terror against the people of the world" and considers US-style capitalism to be the cause of much of the world's instability.
