Gov Dean and Jim rally in DC

Written by: Mary R on Mar 10, 2010 3:22 AM EST

"We deserve a vote! Are you for the insurance companies or are you for the American people?"

That's what Gov. Howard Dean told attendees of a healthcare rally Tuesday in DC's Dupont Circle.

Thousands of pro-health care reform supporters -- including DFA chair Jim Dean -- gathered to protest the gridlock of the current bill and abusive health insurance industry. The AFL-CIO's Richard Trumka, SEIU's Anna Berger, Justin Rubin from MoveOn and representatives from other progressive organizations like CREDO were there, too.

The march went through downtown Washington to a hotel where America's Health Insurance Plans, an association of health insurance companies, was meeting for a conference.

I make the crowd out to be 2,000+ and growing, by what I think is a rather conservative estimate. The Circle itself is jammed, and contingets numbering in the hundreds are arriving from staging areas in all directions.

...

Clever use of signage here, with several dozen folks carrying customizable signs that read, "Another ____ for the Public Option," the blank having been filled in with everything from "healthy voter" to "bleeding heart commie". Also on hand, of course, drummers, since no protest would be complete without them.

Thanks to everyone who showed up.
