I Lost Gov. Dean's Favorite Tie...

Written by: Staff Writer on Aug 31, 2004 11:28 PM EDT

I hate to admit it... but, I lost Gov. Dean's favorite tie. I was supposed to be his dutiful staff person—the person he relies on in any situation when he travels. I am his spokesperson, I field phone calls, set up media interviews, hold onto briefing papers and gifts people give him—and as strange as it may seem—the week of August 2nd, I was in charge of four ties.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking... how hard can it be for a grown woman to keep four ties? I know, I know—trust me—the staff at DFA hasn't been shy when it comes to teasing me about this.

Here's the story: when Gov. Dean hosted Topic A with Tina Brown, he brought four different ties with him to New Jersey so we could see what looked best with the cameras on the TV set. It was my job to hold onto the ties that he decided not to wear.

Gov. Dean in the missing tie.

Yes, the tie I lost was Gov. Dean's favorite tie—not just because it was nice-looking or trendy, but because it was sentimental. This is the tie his mother recently gave him, not to mention the tie he wore for his speech at the Democratic Convention and all of the presidential debates during the primaries.

It has taken me a few weeks to 'fess up to this mishap. I was convinced Gov. Dean or another staff person traveling with us, (*ahem* Tom McMahon), misplaced the tie, but after retracing my steps, I can say with full confidence, TieGate is 100% my fault.

I want to get him a new one, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I thought the tie was by Vineyard Vines, but their Web site doesn't seem to have the exact same color. It's hard to tell in the picture, but those are little whales on the tie.

I've searched stores in Burlington high and low, I've done more Google and Yahoo! searches than you can ever imagine, I've even called my mother in Atlanta and asked her to look at all the stores in her area, but alas, I have had no luck. I just can't find the tie.

Laura,

You are very brave to tell this story. I have a feeling that the tie will show up. It seems a little odd that it could just disappear. It isn't valuable like a diamond or cash. So I would think with some serious retracing of your steps you have a wonderful chance of finding it.

How about tucked between a chair cushion or the seat of a car? Or could it be in a pocket of yours or Howard's suitcase? Did you call the studio of Topic A and send out a Blue Whale Tie Alert?

Crushies, put on your thinking caps. Where can Howard's tie be?

Howard Dean appearance:

Howard Dean speak at the University of Redlands, in Redlands, California, at 7 PM on Labor Day evening, September 6th, 2004. He will appear in the "chapel", which is not really a chapel in the traditional sense, and there is no admission fee. Attendees are advised to show up early.

Repost from last, long thread:

Joe Klein just on CNN, firming the rumor that there will be housecleaning in the Kerry camp.

He named Cahill, Frum and one other (didn't hear name) who will be either papered over with another layer or asked to resign.

Klein said Kerry hates to fire people and will often just hire over their heads instead.

This sounds so unpresidential it is pathetic.

Joe Klein is so sneaky at times.

Lieberman rallies support for elections post hopeful
By Josh Mitchell

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Monday, August 30, 2004

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman returned to the home of the election debacle that cost him the vice presidency — this time, to endorse Arthur Anderson's bid to unseat Elections Supervisor Theresa LePore.

During two Democratic Party rallies in Palm Beach County on Sunday, Lieberman urged Democrats to replace the woman he calls responsible for the butterfly ballot that led to the 2000 election controversy.

On a more serious note..just watched the local evening news here in Michigan's upper peninsula. They asked about seven people on camera who they will be voting for. One solid Bush, one solid Kerry, five undecided, leaning for Kerry but not feeling great about it.

There may not be alot of people living up but it may be a nice weekend roadtrip for some Michiganders, or even some Northern Wisconsin folks. The trees are already turning a nice bright orange and red up here - if anything it's a chance to see some fall colors early.

Hello Oscar.

I’ll ignore the comments on The First Lady…but men who don’t date and eventually marry women who are as smart or smarter then they are really insecure. They joy in life is not the catch but the chase and if the chase goes on all your life then so does the joy.

The ultimate joy for an aggressive man is to be able to say that you hold your own…with an aggressive woman. That’s the ultimate “muscle car”.

DailyKos was mentioned tonight on one of the channels as one of the blogs (both conservative and liberal) that panned the Bush twins.

It is weird to see TV getting its news from the blog but also, I believe entirely appropriate.

So I went over to Kos to see whether they were dissecting the murmuring news that Kerry's campaign staff is undergoing some changes and I got distracted by the top thread, which was discussing the dearth of Democratic rebuttal or rapid response on TV to the speeches tonight.

I thought it was just me, but I guess it's not. There was a consensus that agreed with my perception that there was a clear lack of adequate Democratic presence on the TV channels tonight.

During the Democratic Convention, the channels were lousy with avid Republicans, eager to whittle away at the speeches and insert GOP frames onto everything happening.

Where is Kerry's rapid response team? Is that part of the problem being cleaned up in their campaign?

Hello: Really. Guys like muscle cars big ones with big engines ones that are hard to control (try a Fiero with a 456 in it).

When you find a woman who likes more horsepower in a vehicle than you think you can handle well thats pretty neat. Ever seen a pilot put a C-130 on an aircraft carrier?

Now wait until you see the helmet come off and the aviator is a woman and quite attractive---and here is the kicker...she is in love with you.

Not every guy gets to fall in love with a woman who can handle airplanes (the ultimate muscle car) at least as good as he can. Most guys are to insecure for that...

The odd thing is most women are very insecure around a woman who can take a C-130 and take it on and off the boat. They cannot compete.

Hence the "generally" - women have been working relationships for a *very* long time, and men *generally* don't pay that much attention to relational issues, so we can't say *why* we don't dig someone (could never admit being intimidated, you know), but men generally shy away from women who are clearly intellectually superior to them. Really broad brush, but generally true from what I've seen and read.

Thus, Bush had to marry someone who probaly went to school on a short bus - just like him...

I've learned not to question people's motives so closely.

Now, before I go, this from Nausea (spoken of above, in connection to the Republican Nauseating Convention) written by Jean-Paul. Sartre.

A fitting book for these times, I think:

"People who live in society have learned to see themselves in mirrors as they appear to their friends. Is that why my flesh is naked? You might say - yes you might say, nature without humanity… Things are bad! Things are very bad: I have it, the filth, the Nausea."

All you people watching the Rethuglican Convention, I have a question:

Why??

You could conserve energy, turn off the TV, and just hit yourself repeatedly in the head with a mallet. It would be just as good for you.

Gov. Dean really looked good the night he hosted that TV show. His tie wasn't even slightly crooked at the top towards his left.
Liked the tie he had on too.
Spooky new swift boat ads running now. Like they tampered with Kerry's voice.
I am glad there might be a shake-up in the Kerry
campaign. MSNBC has no one representing Dems tonight. Trippi was on last night. People were holding up signs last night also. They got rid of the people holding signs and dems spokesman.
People were holding anti-Bush signs outside the window. The very fair media got rid of that fast.

Actually, I was agreeing about the insecurity issue without mentioning the car parallel, but if you truly understand how many if not most men see their car as an extension of themselves, to be compared to a car is actually highly complimentary, from a guy's perspective. In some relationships the guy's car gets *much* more attention than the woman - not that that's in any way healthy, right, or good, but I'm just saying. Just some perspective. I also realize that some will absolutely object to a woman being compared to *any* inanimate object, and if I offended then I do apologize - I meant no offense.

This is good copy for anyone's conversation with dreaded conservatives, door-to-door canvassing, or letters to the editor:

A Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

Joe gets up at 6:00 AM to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot with good, clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan. Because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast -- bacon and eggs this day. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower, reaching for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount that is contains because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and the breakdown of its contents. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree-hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer meets these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he'll get worker's compensation or an unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should loose his home to temporary misfortune.

It's noon time. Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electric until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification (those rural Republican's would still be sitting in the dark).

Joe is happy to see his dad, who is now retired. Joe's dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. After his visit with dad, Joe gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show. The host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees, "We don't need those big government liberals ruining our lives. After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

In the years to come, Joe's life will change dramatically. The U.S. dollar will be devalued as a result of our huge deficit, our living standards demolished, our standing with the world diminished and our social security gone...all because some conservative republican made sure he could take care of himself and his buddies.

Aghast, i remain...

We have two Catchall parties going head to head, when that happens people look for a clear difference, that difference lies with Bush. Sure he's wrong but he's wrong with strong conviction. He's the clear difference.

Shame on you DNC, shame on you New Democrats, shame on you John Kerry, when will the masses ever hear of your accomplishments in the Senate?

Wait a minute...I go away from the blog for a day and come back to be implicated in Tie-Gate??? ;-) Whatever day it happened, I'm sure I have an airtight alibi.

(And just to clarify -- personally, I'd not be particularly interested in stealing the Gov's favorite tie to capture his scent for a short while. Holding it hostage in exchange for an opportunity to see him in person, though...well, I might not be above that! But I've got an alibi, I swear!)

In other news, I sure do hope that Arthur Anderson pulls this one through. It would be a great triumph for all of us if Rob MacKenna, Arthur Anderson, and Betty Castor all won tonight!

Kerry mess makes Gov Dean scream look like a
walk in the park.
The media takes everything out of context. They
are so rep.
I personally liked the scream.
Couldn't Kerry see this coming? He needs an a Carvelle out there for his campaign. His campaign was on yesterday from headquarters and the women who talked, looked all ruffled.
The book I read said that the most important thing a candidate has to have, even before the campaign starts is an excellent campaign manager and staff.
Too bad the Rep never mention the huge deficits.
One-third of 1.3 trillion dollars the Gov take in
to debt repayment. If interests go up, the government income could go to debt repayment.
The deficit is about 500 billion plus the 200 billion they borrow from social security each year. They borrow a billion dollars everyday from
other nations. We are worlds largest debtor nation.

There are a few reasons I don't like Hillary. Also don't like Laura Bush for being a weak weenie.

Hill stayed with someone who cheated for many years. There's something called trust. It's not just about the sex.

Hill didn't set a good example for Chelsea by staying with said louse. Would have shown more strength to leave Bill IMO.

Major component of a happy marriage, at least in my old fashioned book, is trust. Scruples and morals count for something to me anyway. A cheating spouse is a lying spouse.

I was gonna pile onto the DLC phone line also, but then I thought, "wait a minute".

Is the lack of Democrats on the media the fault of the Democrats, or the fault of the media? How many times, in how many ways, have we seen the media bias their coverage in favor of the Rethuglicans? On this very thread someone posted about the media cutting away from anti-Bush protestors holding signs up in the window. How well I remember CNN and MSNBC cutting away in haste from Gov. Dean's February 18 speech when he said, "it is inevitable that we will win." Renee and Demetrius posted the other night how Demetrius was going to be on a radio interview-- then the station canceled it at the last minute and put on some Kerry squab who was so soft he couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag.

I really have to think part of it is the media keeping strong Democratic spokespeople off the air, and then hand-picking invertebrates like Alan Colmes so they can make the Democrats look weak and spineless.

Dean Nut - yep, that's my favorite pic I've ever taken of Dean!

That was taken when he spoke outside the Take Back America conference in Boston to the crowd of over 1,000 of us who couldn't get inside after waiting in line for a couple of hours. Many of us outside were die-hard Dean fans, but I spoke with others who weren't huge Dean supporters in the primary who were won over by how thoughtful and generous it was for him to come out and spend time with people who had waited so long to see him. I know his shedule was impossibly busy during convention week, so it was really great for him to come outside to address a 2nd audience.

Okay, Mr. Oler. I take it back that you were trying to be provocative. It's clear you're operating from a very personal paradigm in your statement equating women with cars. As is, it seems, Oscar.

I've learned not to question people's motives so closely.

Posted by Patricia Taylor at September 1, 2004 12:57 AM

Hello Patricia.

I was not repeat NOT trying to be provocative. I was just stating my own personal preference. I have dated women who are "stunning" but more or less empty shells when you get past their looks>

I have fallen in love with a woman who was stunning in her appearance and could both bring C-130's aboard the aircraft carrier and take them off again...and point the aircrafts 105mn "gun" to an accuracy of a couple of feet.

And in the process really didnt care what most men or most women thought of her. She wore Gold wings on her sports bra, had no problem playing and winning at Strip poker and could not only survive in a mans world but excel there.

And here is the kicker...she loved me.

I am not trying to be provacative or anything else. I am just saying if you cannot fall in love with someone who is your equal or better in everything you do (it was easy for me to get where I got I dont ahve the gender issue) than you dont know muscle.

She didnt get her nickname "slugger" for nothing.

She earned her gold wings and yellow stripes with a star...and did it when it was almost impossible. The C-130 is the ultimate "muscle car".

And she loved me.

It's likely that the color in the image isn't accurate. With shiny textiles that are, photos can only approximate the color, because the reflected light from the shiny fabric messes up the apparent tone. The light blue is probably darker than it appears.

This must be an issue in "2004". Please! Keep it going.

----------------------------------

SOCIAL SECURITY:
(This is worth reading. It is short and to the point.)
Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions during election years. !

Our Senators and Congresswomen do not pay into Social Security and, of
course, they do not collect from it.

You see, Social Security benefits were not suitable for persons of their
rare elevation in society. They felt they should have a special plan for
themselves. So, many years ago they voted in their own benefit plan.

In more recent years, no congressperson has felt the need to change it.
After all, it is a great plan.

For all practical purposes their plan works like this:

When they retire, they continue to draw the same pay until they die.

Except it may increase from time to time for cost of living adjustments..

For example, former Senator Byrd and Congressman White and their wives may
expect to draw $7,800,000.00 (that's Seven Million, Eight-Hundred Thousand
Dollars), with their wives drawing $275,000.00 during the last years of
their lives.

This is calculated on an average life span for each of those two
Dignitaries.
Younger Dignitaries who retire at an early age, will receive much more
during the rest of their lives.

Their cost for this excellent plan is $0.00. NADA....ZILCH....

This little perk they voted for themselves is free to them. You and I pick
up the tab for this plan. The funds for this fine retirement plan come
directly from the General Funds;

"OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK"!

From our own Social Security Plan, which you and I pay (or have paid) into,
every payday until we retire (which amount is matched by our
employer) we can expect to get an average of $1,000 per month after
retirement.

Or, in other words, we would have to collect our average of $1,000 monthly
benefits for 68 years and one (1) month to equal Senator! Bill Bradley's
benefits!

Social Security could be very good if only one small change were made.

That change would be to:
Jerk the Golden Fleece Retirement Plan from under the Senators and
Congressmen. Put them into the Social Security plan with the rest of us ...
then sit back.....
and watch how fast they would fix it.

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and
maybe good changes will evolve.

How many people can YOU send this to?
Better yet.....
How many people WILL you send this to??

Keep this going clear up through the 2004 election!! We need to be heard

LET NADER & THIRD PARTIES DEBATE!!!!!!!!

Let Nader Debate Heroes of the Week:
Glenn Patterson of Meriden Connecticut, who got 13 signatures last week talking to fellow Nutmeggers. Shatzi Weisberger, who got 16 signatures petitioning in the Bronx; Lynda Hernandez, who got 16 signatures at a local meeting in Southern California; and Tara Lewis & Mary Weldon, who spent their lunchtimes petitioning in Manhattan and got 10 signatures. Way to go!

On-line Fundraising Campaign needs just $1,630!
We have just 24 hours until the completion of our on-line $25,000 fundraising drive. We need just $1,630 to reach our goal! Please make a contribution today. As an added incentive, every contribution of $100 or more comes with a free 2 year subscription to The Neo-Independent, the first and only magazine for independents. Your financial support fuels the Let Nader Debate campaign every step of the way. Please give today!

Why Let Nader Debate?
A number of Let Nader Debate signers have asked me whether we support the inclusion of other independent and third party candidates in the debates. The answer is yes…AND ... Nader is the household name.

Nader has a 40 year track record of fighting corporate crime. Nader is seatbelts, clean drinking water and the EPA. This campaign is about using the Nader name and legacy to build a movement for the voter's right to a better democracy. The debate sponsors can brush off lesser known independents and use their craftily designed 'official criteria' to justify the exclusion of just about everyone else -- but they have a problem. The desire among the American people for better democracy is not going away.

It's getting harder and harder for the Commission on Presidential Debates to project itself as a 'neutral body.' Several weeks ago a Federal judge ordered the Federal Elections Commission to conduct a full investigation into the CPD and whether they were meeting their obligation to be a nonpartisan body.

Nader’s exclusion from the debates, not to mention the enormous energy the Democratic Party is exerting to kick him off the ballot, exposes just how committed both parties are to keeping our democracy small enough, and manageable enough, to control it. To that we say -- Let Nader Debate!

Other developments

Thanks to your financial support, our on-line ad campaign is expanding! Our 'Trust in Democracy: Let Nader Debate' ad will begin running on http://talkingpointsmemo.com/, http://politics1.com/, http://www.gothamist.com/, http://www.rawstory.com/, http://www.csmonitor.com and on Google Ad Words (Type in 'Nader' on Google - our ad will appear)

We're also launching a campaign to target African-American voters. A new ad, featuring a picture of former independent presidential candidate Dr. Lenora Fulani with the message 'Dr. Lenora Fulani says Trust in Democracy: Let Nader Debate' will begin running on www.Blackvoices.com and www.blackplanet.com by the end of the week.

Last week, the Committee for a Unified Independent Party, a national think tank and strategy center for independent voters, filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party, John Kerry and John Edwards for conspiring to eliminate Ralph Nader from the presidential ballot. The suit has gotten national media coverage. You can read the lawsuit and news clips at www.cuip.org.

Please give today!

Funny blog today, and the situation to try Sym's cracked me up!

(For those who don't live where there's a Sym's, it's a neat kind of off-price warehouse-y place where top brand and designer leftover clothes are sold at low prices that keep getting lower until eventually someone takes the unfortunate garment off their hands.)

As for rapid response on the convention, am hoping that right now Kerry's folks are just taking detailed notes. Last night was so egregious in almost every way that I couldn't believe my ears.

Let me count the ways:

Liddy Dole's terrible speech loaded up with misapplied Biblical code phrases. They need to send someone the evangelicals respect into the heartland to shred that one.

Sam Brownback talking about how compassionate the party is to everybody but gays.

Bill Frist's assertion that an embryo deserves "respect" (even though gay people don't). I was wondering if gay embryos deserve the same respect or if they can be sacrificed for stem cell research as soon as we can figure out the gay marker in DNA.

Rod Paige's remarks don't seem to be transcribed. I wonder how much of a total embarrassment they were?

Ahnold's speech, fine and dandy, actually. I liked it. But the delegates' behavior sure didn't do anything to restore honor and dignity to the Garden. In fact, even Arnold seemed annoyed by them.

Can't say enough about the twins. Words fail me.

After all that Laura was a relief, vapid though she is.

I say, let's hope for more of this and have a great, all-points rebuttal at the end. No sense using some of our best lines too soon.

Meanwhile, I sit enthralled to see how Dick Cheney will respond to Alan Keyes calling his daughter a "selfish hedonist". There's the love of Christ for you (not).

Heh, found Rod Paige's remarks, which include the following:

"Whatever the size of our armed forces or economy, no nation can sustain its greatness unless it educates all of its citizens, not just some of *it*."

Uh, Rod, that would be "some of *them*".

It would be great to have a Secretary of Education who didn't speak in typos, for starters.

I mean, if your local football coach said on TV "Well we're not going to win this season" you'd fire his sorry you-know-what. Surely a "WARTIME PRESIDENT" as he likes to style himself deserves to be fired if he comes out and says he can't win the thing.

Good morning, Still reading through the thread. How nice to wake to a chuckle. A tie is just a bunch of threads, isn't it?

But, to address the shrub's flub about whether the war is winable or not, it might be a good idea to take some time and think about exactly that ought to be used. I happen to think that this "misstatement" is further evidence of the fact that the shrub is extremely SUGGESTIBLE. In other words, his behavior is almost entirely reactive--he responds to people as they behave towards him. So, when Matt Lauer, an obviously agreeable person, suggested by his tone that the war is unwinable, the shrub, quite naturally agreed.
This hypothesis would explain why his handlers go out of their way to make sure he has no contact with disagreeable interviewers or questioners and why hard-nosed reporters have been cut out of the questioner pool.
If that's the case, then wouldn't the best strategy be to set up more interviews with mild-mannered journalists who's manner is sympathetic, but whose questions are to the point?
Wouldn't it be fun to see how many outrageous propositions the shrub could be led to agree with?
Oh, I forgot. There's already a rather long list.
It obviously bears repetition--but not in the context of flip-flops or overtly to make fun.

No, I don't think that's quite right. The shrub didn't call himself a "wartime president;" he refers to himself as a "warpresident" as in an elaboration of "warrior" A man who defines himself in terms of "war" is not going to want it to end (to win is to bring conflict to an end) because without that definition he is nothing.
Just because the shrub is not conscious of what he says, it does not mean that his sub-conscious makes no sense. Indeed his sub-conscious speaks the truth, as most human brains understand it.

Here's my response to this article.

Prof. Ramadan just doesn't get it. As a Muslim he is now a member of the latest group to serve as the target of "shared antagonism" which has traditionally been useful in America to unify a diverse population on the cheap. The antagonism directed towards him, or more correctly, his apparently unmotivated exclusion or segregation, has nothing to do with his own actions. "Shared antagonism" is not reasonable or rational. It is, however, very effective, not only because it costs the participants nothing, but because it is indeterminate and unending.

"Williams said she was humbled by her decisive victory. She said she attributed the support to being active in the community as an advocate for her neighborhood, the Porters area located near downtown Gainesville."

I met Janie Williams twenty five years ago when we worked together to keep her neighborhood from being bulldozed in the name of Urban Removal. Though, between me and the blog, "humble" is not a word most people would apply to Janie.

I just got this in my e-mail, it's from a member of our Cortland group
It's time for a new civil war. Democrats should be allowed to benefit from programs we support, Republicans benefit from their own legislation.

1. SOCIAL SECURITY- Democrats can continue to benefit with the current system and cost of living adjustments. Republicans you have to put your money in the
stock market and let a stockbroker handle your future, no lock box for you.

2. MEDICARE & MEDICAID- Democrats continue with current benefits and demand price controls on drugs from pharmaceutical companies. Republicans you need to ask your doctor for free medical services and try to get free samples from drug companies.

3. MINIMUM WAGE- Democrats get to keep current minimum wage and adjust it to a living wage. Republicans get to abolish minimum wage and overtime and can implement Chinese wages on their party workers.

4. EQUAL RIGHTS- Democrats get equal treatment among sexes and races.
Republicans, especially women, you become 2nd class citizens again, handmaids.

5. ABORTION- Democratic women decide their own reproductive actions and rights. Republican women get white preachers to decide for them.

6. STEM CELL REASEARCH- Democrats get to benefit from research in this field. Republicans, your 2 year old son or grandson just diagnosed with diabetes, sorry you cannot benefit from new research.

7. GAY ISSUE- Democrats allow civil unions and also wake up to the fact that gay marriage is no threat to a man-women relationship. Republicans with gay kids, hide them in a closet or let a democrat adopt them.

8. ENVIROMENT- Democrats live west of the Mississippi with fuel efficient cars and new fuel alternatives. Republicans live east of the Mississippi, with acid rain, clear cutting of trees, and mercury in your fish and children.

9. MILITARY SERVICE- Democrats bring back a fair draft, no exemptions for school, only deferments for major medical problems. Republicans continue to let the poor die for you, while people with a hummer and 5 American flag decals on rear window get a deferment. Sound bitter, darn right, I'm tired of people benefiting from programs that help them from birth to death, that were passed by democratic presidents and legislatures{social security, Medicare, Medicaid, veteran benefits, G I benefits, women's right to chose, equal pay for all, equal rights for all races, headstart, minimum wage, unemployment benefits, overtime pay, right to organize}. Republicans they have you so fooled on stupid issues, when all they really care about is power and money, mainly money.

footnote; I'm a 1966 draftee who also came home from serving my country and demonstrated against the Vietnam war, it was war protesters who finally brought home the troops with pressure we put on government, it sure wasn't people who sat in their living rooms watching Walter Cronkite every night and saw the body count every week and did nothing.

Oh, yes, almost forgot. The headline on the Boston Globe this morning reads

GOP SOUNDS OPPORTUNITY THEME

Which raises the question whether this opportunity is in any way related to the "CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY" that neighborhood groups all over the country were taught to prevent by making sure their doors, windows and cars were locked at all times. Indeed, anyone walking the street after dark was a target for a crime of opportunity.

I actually thought the "O" word for this GOP convention was going to be OWNERSHIP. Wonder if that was determined to be an undesirable goal, after all, or the word didn't work too well with the claim that Republicans are to be credited with getting rid of the ownership of other people. Maybe the "end of ownership" and the "beginning of ownership" was seen as too much of a potential "flip-flop."

http://www.projo.com/extra/election/content/projo_20040901_chafee01.16177c.html

NEW YORK -- Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee, the liberal Yankee Republican from Rhode Island...

In after-hours conversations over drinks, over scrambled eggs and bacon at breakfast, and in the corridors outside the Republican National Convention, Rhode Island's GOP delegates say Chafee's refusal to publicly endorse President Bush's reelection campaign is a serious political error that practically guarantees him a primary challenge from the conservative side of his party when his seat comes up in 2006.

...Chafee is spending less than 24 hours in New York this week. The most public event he attended yesterday was a reception for the Republican Majority for Choice, a group of party moderates who have been fighting a largely losing battle for abortion rights in a party whose platform calls for a constitutional amendment banning the medical procedure.

Chafee has broken with Mr. Bush on some major issues, including the war in Iraq, the massive tax cuts that have triggered federal deficits, and a host of social issues from abortion and gay marriage to stem-cell research.

Rhode Islanders especially applaud his opposition to Mr. Bush's Iraq policies, he says. Voters aren't buying the president's arguments that fighting terror and the military invasion of Iraq are linked.

"This isn't about al-Qaida," Chafee said. "This is a whole vision of remaking the Middle East -- let's be up front about it.

Chafee says he is proud of his vote against going into Iraq -- a vote even Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry did not make.

"I've never wavered on that vote," Chafee said. "When I take a position, I don't do it for political interests. I do it because I think it is the best thing for our community, for our state and for our country."

While some Republicans consider Chafee a flake, liberal, or worse, he has strong voter appeal in Rhode Island. In 2000, Chafee defeated Democrat Bob Weygand, at the time a sitting congressman and former lieutenant governor, with about 57 percent of the vote.

The most recent Brown University poll, conducted in late June, put Chafee's job approval rating at 56 percent; President Bush, by comparison, was at 31 percent...

ONE OF MR. BUSH'S problems, says Chafee, is that the president is trying to shift gears in an election year and put a moderate convention face on a party that has hard-right positions on social issues and the war.

"You have got to be consistent," Chafee says. "That's one of the problems he's having. He has been playing so much to the conservative base and now he is waving the moderate flag. You don't know that people will buy it."

"I'm going to try to be honest," Chafee said.

...

Robert Manning, of Charlestown, the Rhode Island GOP's new national committeeman, says Chafee is likely to face a primary challenge, especially if President Bush is reelected and Republicans garner five or six Senate seats this November.

If the Republican-Democratic balance in the chamber stays at or near its current 51 Republicans and 48 Democrats, the GOP leadership and a Bush White House would not want to push a primary and risk losing the seat to a Democrat.

"As a Republican in Rhode Island, you always worry about a primary," said Chafee. "It is just part of the business."

Hello Larry.

As I was waking up this morning and preparing for the 'effort' on behalf of my Community Association (I'll say who with after its over) I watched/listened to Arnie's speech.

I can see why it is getting good reviews.

Republicans are doing something very smart (either intentionally or just on fools luck)...they are slowly but surely taking what were the issues that "made" the Democratic party and redefining them and in the process "us"...and we are politically paying a price for it.

Many (well a couple of decades ago) I got to talk with George Gay. More than talk, I was his escort/aide for a weekend honoring him. The most unique thing I learned from him there was just "how" optimistic in even the most darkest of times Americans are (or at least were then).

One evening at dinner I asked him "Did everyone with you know the score?" and his answer was "yes but individually we all thought we would survive, thats how Americans are, we are optimistic to the end."

Well, Gay grew up in the Depression where there was little room for optimisim, but he found it. At that time some of my relatives who were in the GD were still alive and so I asked them the same question. To a person they spoke of an optimisim that "next year would be better". Over and over again I heard "its how Americans are.".

Arnie tapped into that last night. Not only on an individual basis but on a country basis. That was the UN line..(and btw I dont believe the UN is all that hot either).

The GOP in their convention are playing on that line...American optimisim. And one can see how their policies go for it.

Someone up thread posted a deal about either investing social security or your own stock savings account. Social Security of the 1930's was a statement of optimisim. Most Americans did not live long enough to collect social security.

Today the odds of one making it to SS age are well pretty darn good. The GOP concept is a slap in the face of the concept that "we are all in this together" (which is what SS has become) BUT it does speak to a facade of optimism...invest money in the market well you COULD make a killing (left unsaid is the flip side of course). If it was just "to benefit me" I would easily rather have my social security to invest in the stock market. Most of us could easily do better in the market then in social security...but not everyone can.

In the GD the income stratification that exist today (ie the middle class) was not as great as it is now AND people easily saw "well off" folks slipping into poverty. Thats harder to see now...and its harder to sell "folks in my boat" that we have to worry about folks who are not in our boat.

Republicans have a message to the middle class (both lower/middle/upper)..."you succeeded because of your hard work, everyone can succeed because of their hard work, keep going tomorrow will be better to." Ignored are the government programs which help those (me) succeed. Slimed are programs for lower income people...but we dont have a successful counter to that.

I asked Gay if while he was bobbing in the ocean with the IJN sailing all around him he ever thought "my shows up". He admitted to thinking that some the first night in the water; but added "seeing all the Japanese carriers burning, the ones that hit us at Pearl harbor I thought I might be done here but what a way to go out."/

Democrats need to find an optimisim; a idear of how (to quote my Grandmother) "Tomorrow will be better". That after all is what Happy Days are here again use to say.

Robert

PS Who is George Gay. Ensign George Gay at the ripe old age of 23 was part of the USS Hornets Torpedo Squadron in 1942. Torpedo 8 flew airplanes that were obsolete 5 years earlier, that carried torpedoes which really did not work (and which were barely faster then the ships that they were attacking), and which engaged the Imperial Japanese Navy main battle fleet at Midway with no fighter cover. Now Captain Gay was the only survivor. He spent sometime in the water with a bullet hole in his hand and was almost run over by one of the Japanese Carriers that was sinking. His squadron expended all its torpedoes. Only two hit. None exploded.

Re: C-130's landing on aircraft carriers
See the link for some cool pictures.
http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/history/q0097.shtml

According to this website (and we all know how reliable the web can be) a C-130 was test landed on an aircraft carrier on a carrier in October 1963. According to the site: "However, the risks of operating such a large aircraft in the hectic day-to-day carrier environment were considered too great, and the idea of using the C-130 as a COD aicraft was abandoned. The C-130 has never been operated from a carrier since, and the much smaller C-2A Greyhound was later selected to fulfill the COD role."

And how is this news?

The sure sign of a blog dying... a story about a tie.

How lame.

Laura, is this the tie: http://www.nantucketreds.com/mens/access/ties/isle_whale.html
If not, try contacting Demi Wasilko: demi@vineyardvines.com 1 800 892 4982
I found her name on a Vineyard Vines Press release that mentions Governor Dean. She should be able to help you.
