(Disclaimer: This post is from Darcy Burner and her campaign. I do not work for Burner's campaign, but I am an intern at Democracy for America.)

As many of you have probably heard, a fire on July 1st destroyed our family’s home. A faulty lamp in Henry’s room triggered the blaze, which consumed the house in a matter of minutes.

Unfortunately, our home and all of our possessions are a total loss, but we are so grateful that our family escaped safely. Henry, our five-and-a-half-year-old son, is the real hero in all of this. When he woke up coughing as smoke filled his room, he did exactly what he was supposed to do: he came and woke up his parents. We are so proud of him. Because of his quick action, we are all safe today.

Darcy spoke to a packed room at the 33rd Legislative District meeting in Normandy Park on Monday, May 19th, 2008.  The crowd was enthusiastic and well informed about the race. At times they even shouted out additional talking points: "Tell them how ineffective Dave Reichert is as a legislator."  Clearly, many of the attendees in the audience were aware that that Congressman Reichert is ranked 401st out of 439 members of Congress in effectiveness, dead last in the Washington State delegation and below the non-voting members of Guam and America Samoa.

The audience also raised their hands unanimously to agree with the point that Reichert is most certainly not a moderate -- despite his claims to the contrary. They knew that on the important issues -- the economy, the war in Iraq, to name two -- he marches in lockstep with President Bush, who has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for his reelection. The crowd sighed audibly when Darcy told them that Congressman Reichert had said at a public debate that he believes pharmacists should be allowed to substitute their personal moral judgments for sound medical practice by refusing to fill legal birth control prescriptions for women.

Darcy assured the crowd that her decisions  when in congress will be based on 5 basic principles and that these principles draw a clear distinction between what she will do and what Congressman Reichert has done while in Congress.
