Thank You from Our Family
Linked to campaigns: Darcy Burner for Washington
(Disclaimer: This post is from Darcy Burner and her campaign. I do not work for Burner's campaign, but I am an intern at Democracy for America.)
As many of you have probably heard, a fire on July 1st destroyed our family’s home. A faulty lamp in Henry’s room triggered the blaze, which consumed the house in a matter of minutes.
Unfortunately, our home and all of our possessions are a total loss, but we are so grateful that our family escaped safely. Henry, our five-and-a-half-year-old son, is the real hero in all of this. When he woke up coughing as smoke filled his room, he did exactly what he was supposed to do: he came and woke up his parents. We are so proud of him. Because of his quick action, we are all safe today.
Rest assured that the campaign will go on. We are taking a few days off to spend some time together, and begin the process of dealing with the losses we have suffered. Doing so will take time, but we will rejoin the campaign soon.
We may have lost our home and our possessions, but for the most part they can be replaced. It is just stuff, and we narrowly avoided what could have been a real tragedy. While we were a little shaken by what happened, rest assured that we are all okay.
We want to offer our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful men and women of the Redmond and Kirkland Fire Departments, and to the investigators from the King County Fire Investigation Unit. Their rapid response and incredible professionalism brought the fire under control and kept it from spreading to our neighbors’ homes. These brave first responders even miraculously rescued Henry’s puppy, Bruce Wayne, who we initially thought had perished in the flames. Sadly, our cat, Charlotte, did not survive the fire.
We are also deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from friends, supporters, and others. So many of you have called to express your condolences, and all of the offers of a place to stay, or clothes to wear, have touched us deeply. On that front we are okay for now. We will stay with close family friends for the next few weeks, and then find longer-term accommodations as we begin the process of rebuilding our home.
Thank you all for thinking of us in our family’s time of need. Your love and support mean the world to us.
With gratitude,
Darcy, Mike and Henry Burner

Our house burnt down in 1974 and what we learned from the it was that, as long as everyone's safe, the observers are much more affected than the owners. And yes, the reason we have professional fire-fighters on call is because we don't want the fire to spread. In a very real sense, the houses that don't burn benefit more from the service. Which is why it is entirely appropriate for the expense to be shared by the whole community and take advantage of the economies of scale.
That's what we organize government for--to deal with the natural and man-made vagaries we can't handle effectively and efficiently as individuals.
Try to defend that against the every-man-for-themselves ideologues who have their heads in the sand. They drive our highways and bridges every day, call the cops when someone is breaking in their house or are involved in an auto accident with us, not the mention the first responders these same ideologues expect to defend the country against terrorists.
Condolences on the passing of your uncle.

Glad to know the Darcy Burner familiy is a-ok.
Hey Paine - you out there? I'm about to send Sheriff Chuck out on yer trail :-)
Well, this is a good old fashioned Saturday night thread -- I think it would be awful to have your house burn down - I'm glad Monica survived hers w/o scars and I hope Ms Burner will too - I broke down and chipped into her campaign -- very sorry about the kitty tho. Subway your post goes right over my head. Hello to Tegan the intern - thanks for posting. See y'all in the morning I hope. Nitie.

Darcy grew up in a blue-collar military family. She knows firsthand the sacrifices American soldiers make. Her brother is a veteran of the War in Iraq and her husband is an Army veteran. Darcy organized Democratic congressional challengers and major military and foreign policy figures to present the “Responsible Plan to End the War”, which has garnered national media attention.

Phil, so sorry about your uncle. Maybe at another time you can post a thread about him.
Memories are to be cherished.
And Phil, you are one of the best.
yes, we are family.
While I don't/can't contribute to every campaign listed here, it's great to hear about local races around the country ~ and even if we don't talk incessantly about a campaign listed, we are made aware and we take note...
for the Darcy Burner love. She is fighting a hard race against an incumbent Bush republican. I went to one of her events that featured Howard Dean! only about 50 people in attendance. Got to talk to him and have my picture taken with him. I am forever in Darcy's debt for that intimate event.
We both support her through local campaigns.
