Who am I?

Melissa Sargent was born, raised, and educated in Madison. Now she and her husband Justin are raising their four boys, Devin, Bailey, Keanan and Trystan, on Madison's Northside where they are very active in their community. Melissa is a small business owner and is currently serving her second term on the Dane County Board. Melissa is running in the 48th Assembly District.

As an elected County Board Supervisor, Melissa is a passionate progressive leader. As a member and now chair of Dane County's Health and Human Needs Committee, she has a solid record of working to make sure public safety net programs are in place. Melissa is committed to strengthening public education, restoring womens rights and workers rights, recruiting good businesses with family supporting jobs, and safeguarding a healthy environment. Melissa has also championed open, transparent, and accountable government. She is a team player, who has played a key role in dramatically increasing the number of democrats on the County Board.

Why am I running?

There is much work to be done in Wisconsin right now to protect and rebuild the Wisconsin Way. I enjoy balancing family life with a commitment to political and public involvement. I believe that my civic involvement provides a good example to my family and friends of what is needed to secure a better future for our citizens and society. I am excited to be running for the Wisconsin State Assembly and representing my neighbors at a state level. I know that I can help move Wisconsins progressive values forward with my energy, vision and belief that government exists to serve its people.

My Goals

Providing a strong and effective voice for my constituents in the capitol and throughout the 48th assembly district that prioritizes an open, transparent, and accountable government.

Protecting and rebuilding Wisconsin's progressive ideals including strengthening public education, recruiting good businesses with family supporting jobs, protect workers right to organize and bargain, as well as safeguarding a healthy & clean environment.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
