Who am I?

Attorney Dennis Dellwo has a long and successful career in law and community service. A current Plan Commissioner for the City of Spokane, Dellwo served under two Governors for the Eastern Washington Growth Management Hearings Board for 12 years. He was elected 7 times to the State Legislature in the 80s and 90s, ascending to several Leadership positions and chairmanships. Dellwo has also been a practicing attorney since the 1970s. In addition to his broad court and legislative experience, Dellwo has worked as an adjunct professor for Gonzagas Law School and undergrad.

From 1983 through 1996, Spokane elected Dennis Dellwo to represent the Third Legislative District in the Washington State Legislature. Among his accomplishments, he chaired both the Health Care and the Banking/Insurance Committees. He served on the powerful Ways and Means Committee and was a ranking member of the Law and Justice Committee. Dellwo prided himself on bringing an understanding of the letter and spirit of the law, tightening loopholes and making the laws fairer for all.

Upon graduating from Gonzaga University and Arizona State University Law School in the 1970s with a Juris Doctor and the completion of his military service, Dellwo helped establish and head the Colville Confederated Tribes Public Defender/Legal Services office on the reservation. As the director and sole attorney, Dennis handled a wide range of legal matters, numerous criminal trials and a variety of civil cases. Dellwo served in this position for two years, living at the reservations tribal headquarters.

Dennis then joined the Spokane law firm of Dellwo, Rudolf and Schroeder and later the firm of Dyreson, Ledlin and Dellwo where he continued his criminal and civil practice. For a while Dellwo also served as a part-time prosecutor. Dellwo has also been trained in Mediation and other Alternate Dispute Resolution methods from the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. During his service in the Legislature, he became a member and later a partner in the local law firm of Winston and Cashatt.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Dellwo served as a faculty member of Gonzaga University School of Law, as an adjunct professor. He also taught
Gonzaga undergraduate students in State and Local Government.

Why am I running?

I believe that serving the public will be the best use of my experience as an ex legislator and an attorney. I have been extensively involved in neighborhood and city affairs and have a clear understanding of our community and its concerns.
I spent 13 years in the Washington State Legislature. While a legislator I held leadership positions, was chairman of important committees and architect of key legislation. I not only bring this experience to the 6th District, but I will be able to take the 6th and Spokane's concerns to the table when legislation or budgets are considered. I will hit the ground running. I also spent 12 years as the attorney member of the Growth Management Hearing Board.

My Goals

My first goal is to work to see that the national and state health care reform is implemented and does what is needed to have affordable and effective insurance available for all.

About the Endorsement Process

All campaigns seeking a DFA endorsement are first required to complete the endorsement application in order to be considered. Members of the DFA Political team will review applications after submission and make endorsement decisions on a rolling basis throughout the applicable election cycle.

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our membership. We gauge DFA member support in a number of different ways. For starters, supporters can publicly show their support on any candidate’s application page. We also utilize endorsement decisions of local DFA groups as a measure of local community support. Finally, if you know a candidate deserving of a DFA endorsement who hasn’t yet applied, we want to hear about them! Please visit the Endorsement FAQ page for answers to frequently asked questions about our endorsement process.

If you still have any questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
