Roy Carter for Congress (NC-5)

Background:

A native resident of Western North Carolina and a lifelong Democrat, Roy Carter is an educator in the Wilkes County Public School System and is the Head Coach of the North Wilkes High School football team. Roy Carter and his wife Pat reside in the Glendale Springs community of Ashe County, NC. The Carters have been married for 43 years and proudly attend the First Baptist Church of West Jefferson. Roy and Pat Carter have three children and two grandchildren. Coach Carter has served the students of Ashe, Surry, and Wilkes Counties as a teacher and football coach for the past forty years. Roy has dedicated his life to educating young people and motivating them to achieve their goals by being a positive and affirming influence in their lives. Leading by example, he has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, working to build homes for hard working families. Through his leadership and innovation several student and community programs were created to combat drop-out rates, drug and alcohol abuse and illiteracy.

Goals:

The primary reason that Roy Carter is running for US Congress is to give the people of the 5th Congressional district the leadership they need and deserve. Carter will be the kind of Congressman who will stand up for what is right, tell you the plain truth, and never forget that your trust, your needs and best interests are more important than anything any special interest could offer. Roy Carter is committed to bridging the partisan divide that has polarized the 5th district for many years. Roy's opponent, Virginia Foxx, is one of the nation's most mendacious right-wing reactionaries who has shown herself to be a mouthpiece for the Bush administration regardless of its negative impact on Northwest North Carolina. Roy Carter will restore trust by being loyal to the citizens of the 5th Congressional district, not oil and pharmaceutical companies.

Issues:

Education- helping young people lift themselves from cycles of poverty and reach their highest potential.

The War in Iraq- Supporting our troops and ending the War safely, strategically, and immediately

Environment/Agriculture- Helping our farmers deal with drought and a new-age economy. Our government should work to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and make a real commitment to alternative fuels and renewable energy.

Grassroots Support:

The Roy Carter for Congress campaign will be grass roots from top to bottom. In our particular district, grassroots campaigns have shown themselves to be extremely effective. We will have a well organized committee of supporters in each of our twelve counties.

Roy Carter is fiscally responsible because he believes in the principles of a balanced budget, the American dream, and an honest day's work. Roy Carter's opponent has blindly supported the Bush Administration in their immoral mismanagement of our tax dollars, leaving a legacy of insurmountable debt for our children and grandchildren.
His opponent continues to support an ill-advised war and refuses to hold the President accountable for the billions of tax dollars still unaccounted for in Iraq. Roy Carter believes that it is time to bring our brave men and women home from Iraq and get them out of harms way. In Congress, Roy Carter will demand responsibility in our foreign policy and will work to restore our standing in the world community.

Roy Carter is socially progressive because he has always held to the Democratic values of equality and civil liberties. Roy Carter insists that real family values include religious liberty and social justice. Roy Carter's opponent, Virginia Foxx, voted against the Voter-Rights Act, against giving aid to victims of hurricane Katrina, and against giving federally-subsidized grant money for low-income minority students wishing to attend college--all of which Roy Carter would have supported.
