Greg Fischer for U.S. Senate

763m2731

Name: Greg Fischer for U.S. Senate
Office: U.S. Senate
Website: gregfischer.com

Background:

I was raised in a family that focused on community service, education and entrepreneurship. My community service has centered on children and education. During my tenure as chairman of the Louisville Science Center, I was instrumental in raising $25 million to transform the Center into an oasis for kids’ interactive science education. My charitable giving has centered on endowed scholarships at the high school and college level for students that need financial assistance. My first business success came after I co-invented the combination ice/beverage dispenser at age 25. Since then I have helped start over twenty businesses. My wife, Alexandra Gerassimides MD, and I are the happy parents of four teenagers.

Goals:

Our country has drifted too far to the right. The resulting stress on the middle class of our country is impeding the ability for our citizens to pursue an American dream of a good education, good job and universal health care. We cannot be a great country without a strong and thriving middle class. Thus I am running in order to seek and restore our respect in the world and a strong middle class in our country.

Issues:

1) Ending the War in Iraq 2) Providing Americans access to quality health care that guarantees eligibility, is affordable and portable, preserves the private practice of medicine, and allows freedom to choose among doctors and other health care providers.
3) Education. I believe every child deserves a world-class education and the opportunities that come with it. In Kentucky I have been committed to expanding educational opportunities by providing scholarships to deserving students and as Chair of the Louisville Science Center I helped raise $25 million, making the center an interactive retreat that encourages young students to study science. In the U.S. Senate I'll continue that commitment by making sure we put a priority on fully funding public schools and providing affordable access to higher education.

Grassroots Support:

It is a central philosophy to my campaign. My primary opponent believes in just writing a big check, but to build a movement you need to be committed to working on a personal level with local political organizations. And to beat an entrenched incumbent like Mitch McConnell, just being on TV and in people's mailboxes won't be enough. That's why I have been traveling around Kentucky, meeting with Democratic clubs of all sizes, and slowly but surely building an organization that will be able to take on Mitch McConnell this November.

DFA Values:

I am committed to equality for all, after all that is how I was raised and live my life.

In terms of being fiscally responsible; as a businessman I have had to meet payroll and balance budgets, and as an elected official I would be committed to a responsible economic policy that balances budgets and is equitable in taxation.
