Kevin Johnson for Mayor
| Name: | Kevin Johnson for Mayor |
| Office: | Mayor |
| Website: | kevinjohnsonformayor.com |
Background:
I am a third-generation Sacramento native, raised by my grandparents in Oak Park. I played professional basketball for the NBA's Phoenix Suns for 12 seasons until retiring in 2000 to focus my time & energy as CEO of St. HOPE, a non-profit community development corporation I founded in 1989. St HOPE was designed to revitalize inner-city communities through public education, economic development, civic leadership and arts enrichment. I am also a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in political science.
Goals:
I believe that government can work, and I’m ready to make that happen. My major goals are:
» Public Safety
» Education
» Quality of Life
» City Management
» Economic Development and Jobs
» Transportation
» Healthcare
» Environment
» Housing
» Regional Leadership
» Bring people together through a common vision for making Sacramento a great city.
»Have safe streets and decrease crime by putting more cops on the street and addressing gang violence.
» Ensure Sacramento is known and sought out for our great public schools.
» Build a strong economy by attracting businesses and creating jobs in the city.
» Make sure that our city government is run efficiently and is responsive to its residents.
Issues:
I am running on education, fiscal responsibility and crime prevention. I have been endorsed by the Sacramento Police Officer's Association for my desire to put more officers on the streets and put the most advanced technology into the hands of those sworn to protect and serve.
Grassroots Support:
We are relying heavily on our field program to win this election. We are tapping into the grassroots and already in the last month of the campaign have received the support of over 500 volunteers. We will be relying on our volunteers to get the message out to every community in Sacramento, including the areas most campaigns would stay away from.
DFA Values:
I have fought hard to improve the quality of life of inner-city school children. My work with St. HOPE started as an after-school activities program that blossomed into a new and innovative way of fixing our school system's problems in Oak Park, one of Sacramento's most needing communities. I have done this while maintaining fiscal responsibility. I have brought over 20 businesses to Sacramento and helped create 300 new jobs, and catalyzed investment & plans for $14 million of economic development in the community. None of this would have been possible if I did not keep a close eye on the financial aspect of St. HOPE.
