McCain chooses Palin

Written by: DFA Staff on Aug 29, 2008 12:00 PM EDT

The Republicans have chosen their vice presidential nominee, and -- surprise! -- she's as corrupt as fellow Alaska Republicans Ted Stevens and Don Young. From MSNBC:

Palin is currently under legislative investigation herself, accused of firing the state's public safety commissioner for not firing her former brother-in-law.

But that's not all! She's also woefull unqualified for the job. Two months ago, she didn't know what the vice president did. From the Politico:

Larry Kudlow of CNBC's "Kudlow & Co." asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain's ticket mate.
Palin replied: "As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question."

Corrupt and unqualified. Obviously, McCain felt the need to pick a running mate that reinforced his message.

Maybe it will just drop with a thud, weighing John Mac Down.

This pick will energize the GOP Christian coalition and make this election all about abortion and gay marriage again though. and it does take away any "historic" vote advantage we had.

We would have had an easier time against Ridge or Lieberman.

I wouldn't get the big head just yet because if we attack on "experience" it will re-inforce that meme against Obama.

and we here who value bottom up should not underestimate someone from the grassroots

we need to make this election about the economy and ending the war

The Democrats are in a lot of trouble.   You can win if you beat up on a woman especially a woman with an infant child.  The young men of the Democratic Party had better start taking the lead of our nominee and learning to respect the women in their lives.

I didn't notice the concern about attacking Ferraro as a candidate for what were regarded as problems with her husband's financial affairs.  George Bush thought he "kicked a little ass" in their debate, and Barbara Bush, asked what she thought of Ferraro, said it "rhymes with rich."

Usually, vice prsidential candidates are vetted for distasteful activity.  It sounds like she was appointed because she is a scumbag.

We have to be cautious how we attack her.  We can always kep the investigation and abuse of power in the forefront.  Her desire to drill in Alaska will keep Dems united.

Her only job is to get the Hillary vote.  I can't believe  women are that dumb to vote to go back to coat hanger abortions.

By Rosalind Waldron on Aug 29, 2008 1:12 PM EDT

I was flabbergasted to hear this, much as I was disconcerted when there was a rumor not that long ago that Obama would pick Sibelius.

I think that the best thing that the Democrats can do is ignore her. The media will discuss things plenty, and people will draw the correct conclusions.

Voters who were solid for McCain will remain solid for McCain.

Voters who were undecided on the basis of "commander in chief qualifications" will wonder about Palin's qualifications and McCain's judgment.

Progressive voters leaning toward Obama will not be swayed by an antienvironment antichoice candidate, female or male.

It occurs to me that Palin is right in the Bush mold; it wouldn't have surprised me to have had her as a Supreme Court nominee.

You're going to see McCain surrounded by men and women veterans from every background.

There is a lot of money to be made from war. You're also going to see working people and their families up front and center when ever and where ever possible with McCain. Some of the union's membership is 60% registered Republican in parts of California. Those are the parts and the ones who delivered us a Republican Governor twice. Our state party has done very little outreach in those red rural and urban areas. What is it like in places like Ohio, Michigan and Florida?

Elections are always about the vote.  The next election is about those electoral college votes.  If the Democratic voters get too disgusted with the next faze of this election they will just stay home.

- WashPost Framing Her as Reformer

By publius on Aug 29, 2008 1:34 PM EDT

Not as ethically challenged.

This puts her on the clean up crew of Alaska's ethics violations:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2008/08/palin_and_mccain_share_enemies.html

In less than two years in office, Palin has made cleaning up the Alaska Republican party -- which has been buffeted by a wide-ranging federal corruption investigation -- into a top priority. In the process, she has angered many in the state's old-guard. In a particularly brash move, Palin earlier this year put out the equivalent of a political hit on Young, who has served as the state's lone House member for 35 years, by encouraging Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell to jump into the GOP primary against the incumbent.

Palin has been a bit more circumspect about criticizing Stevens, but she has made clear her desire for the state, and her party, to wipe the slate clean.

I'm not sure what to think of this.  When I walked out to get my mail, my neighbor lady was there getting hers (she is elderly), she asked me what I thought about Palin, I told her I did not believe she is ready to be Pres.  My neighbor said she is very upset, that McCain should have chosen Romney (not a surprise, practically everyone in UT wanted Romney), the neighbor stated she believed that because Palin has 5 children, especially one with Down Syndrome, that Palin should be at home with her children.  She said she has always liked Joe Biden, will be voting for Obama because of Joe. Mormons do believe a woman's place is in the home.

Now I know UT will not go for Obama, but could this lady's thinking have any affect say in NV, NM, or CO where there are a good number of Mormon voters?  Plus the face Romney was overlooked.

Obama's Speech Lures Some Fence-Sitters ...

Heidi Przybyla

Fri Aug 29, 2:30 AM ET

Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama's speech last night left Janell Mader, a 32-year-old lifelong Republican, ``a little overwhelmed'' -- and likely to vote for him in November.

``All of the concerns or questions that I had have been answered,'' Mader, a homemaker from York, Pennsylvania, said of Illinois Senator Obama, 47, the Democratic presidential candidate. ``John McCain's going to have to do something pretty incredible next week for me to be convinced that the Republican Party deserves another four years.''

Mader was one of a dozen undecided voters from across the U.S. who discussed their impressions both before and immediately after Obama accepted his party's nomination at Invesco Field in Denver on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention.

Some of these persuadable voters had been leaning toward Obama and others were leaning toward the Republican candidate, Arizona Senator McCain, 72. Many said they were impressed by the address. While some of the voters said the first part of Obama's speech was short on specifics, he ultimately allayed their concerns, and most had a positive view of the convention.

Many Democrats responded to the convention in the same way as Rodney Mattingly, a 56-year-old health-department worker from Lebanon, Kentucky, who is a self-proclaimed diehard Clinton supporter.

Prior to the speeches by the New York senator Aug. 26, and by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, the following night, Mattingly said his support for Obama would be determined by ``how the respect is given to Clinton'' at the convention.

After the speeches, in which both Clintons threw their support behind the nominee, Mattingly decided to vote for Obama.

``It's a combination of what Hillary said and what Bill said, and I think Obama's team has given them a lot of respect during this convention so, yes, I'm going to be in that camp now,'' Mattingly said.

- Is McCain out of his mind?

By Sitka on Aug 29, 2008 2:24 PM EDT

(CNN) -- John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the neck up."

In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate he is not thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

By Tom Bearse on Aug 29, 2008 2:43 PM EDT

Otherwise, a fuck up like George Bush, who clearly had neither, would never have become president.

This false argument has been dismissed outright. Would experience make a resume candidate like Bob Dole a great president?  Did it make George H.W. Bush great in comparison to unexperienced, but otherwise qualified people like Lincoln, Eisenhower or Kennedy or, for that matter, George Washington who was elected when no one had ever even been a president?

- Palin and corruption

By volney simmons on Aug 29, 2008 2:38 PM EDT

I wouldn't say she's "corrupt". What she's being investigated for is actually an interesting look into the window of her little mind.

Her ex-bro-in-law was a scumbag at home, may have been slapping her sister around, etc. He had a nice government job, maybe with her help, back in the day. Now the couple's getting divorced and Madame Governor wants to put the hurts on him by taking away his posh job. She asks his boss to fire him. The boss correctly replies that the man did nothing he could be fired for. Just because he was a louse at home didn't make him a louse at work.

So, petulantly, she fires the boss instead, for insubordination.

That's not corruption, that's the childlike action of a person without the requisite maturity to be the leader of the free world. She and Exploding John should be a heck of a duo.

I would assume she could deliver Alaska as well as an energized evangelical base. McCain has the War Party behind him and every billionaire he delivered tens of millions in tax cuts to finance any 527 they want. Big oil can lower gas prices for a few months and make us forget the rape at the pump. This ain't over til it's over.

Let me start by saying I have been and still am an avid Hillary supporter. It has been very difficult for me to get through this week. I have been slowly, but surely, coming around, though, and after watching Barack's speech last night, for the first time, I came to the website and donated....twice! First, through an e-mail link and then second, to get a car magnet! I have to say, all of the unanswered concerns and questions I had about Barack Obama, he answered for me last night...and then some!! I had even considered voting for John McCain at one point this week.

But, now, after last night, and after watching this complete debacle this morning with McCain and this woman, Palin, this morning, I can tell you that I think it's both an insult and an outrage to my intelligence, as well as to me as a woman, that McCain has the audacity to parade this woman in front of national television and put her on the national ticket for a job as serious and complex as the vice presidency of the United States.

Half of her speech was dedicated to introducing her family members, and the other half was dedicated to praising and bowing to McCain. I'm still waiting to hear from her as to what she actually brings to the table in terms of her own qualifications for the position of VP.

Most of her 5 children seem to be grown, but she also appears to have 2 young children, another that appears to be a teen, and how in the world does a mother justify dragging any 5-month old infant around the country on a campaign trail, let alone a special needs baby!? She may be a wonder woman to be able to attain a governorship while balancing life as a wife and mother of 5, but how does that qualify her for VP of the US?! I DO have to question her values. What kind of mother puts her own ambitions above that of her baby, let alone a special needs baby?

Obama answered my questions and concerns last night, and McCain just cemented my concerns about him...he truly is delusional, if not insane. And how dare this Palin woman step out and compare herself to someone like Hillary Clinton?!

- Mothers Shouldn't Work?

By SofiaDad on Aug 29, 2008 4:21 PM EDT

I know that you are merely posting the words of another indivudal and don't necessarily agree with all that is contained within it but I have a real problem with one statement.

"What kind of mother puts her own ambitions above that of her baby, let alone a special needs baby?"

What we don't need to do is start questioning the motives of a mother and whether they are less of a parent because they choose to work.  And that is what the Vice Presidency is - a job.

My wife, ironically was systematically pushed out of her job as the director of an early learning center because she became pregnant (ironic, huh?).  That was unacceptable and so is what is implied by the original message - that mothers need to be there 24/7 for their chidren.

Let's stop focusing on Palin announcement.  She is news material for the next two days.  Does it take away from the momentum of our last 4 nights?  A little.  But it is a non story (unless we push the issue) as soon as their convention begins.  Let's start focusing on the real issue in this election and that is whether or not John McCain's plan for America is good for America and the world.  We know it's not.  Let's convince the undecideds that it is not, also.
