Who am I?
Democrat Kathleen Murphy is President of Johnson Murphy & Associates, a consulting firm based in McLean that provides strategic counseling and builds legislative strategies for companies and non-profit organizations. Previously she worked as a Senior Advisor for International Trade issues at the Department of Commerce and handled Congressional Affairs at USAID during the Clinton administration. She worked for Congressman Charlie Wilson (D-TX) where she held a Top Secret security clearance and handled Defense and Foreign Operations appropriations. Kathleen helped found Salute Our Services, which helps connect service members deployed overseas to their families and Kids Serve Too, an organization to honor and support children in military families. Kathleen has played a critical role in Women’s Campaign International, an organization dedicated to teaching women in developing countries how to become political leaders, and now serves on their advisory board. She was a founding member of the Congressional Wives Task Force, an advocacy group that focused on nutrition labeling and violence in children’s television. Kathleen is a member of the Human Services Council for Fairfax County, the McLean Community Foundation, the Fairfax County Health Care Task Force and serves on a fundraising board for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She is the mother of four children and a graduate of American University. She and her husband, Bill Sudow, are long time McLean residents.
Why am I running?
I am running because our current representative, Barbra Comstock, has consistently failed the voters of this district by taking sides with the extremist Republican majority in Richmond. She has voted against education and transportation funding for our region while actively backing Virginia's mandatory trans-vaginal ultrasound bill, for "personhood" and for dramatic repeals of sensible gun safety laws. I know we can do better for the people of this district.
I know that I can translate my years of public service into meaningful results for the people of this district.
I will fight to protect the rights of all Virginians no matter their religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation. I will be an advocate for the reproductive rights of women, our voting rights and for the civil rights of all our citizens.
I will fight to stop the Republicans in Richmond from raiding our state's General Fund, which funds education and healthcare, in order to pay for other projects.
My DFA Values
I support quality education for all our children and will fight for secure funding for our schools. I support programs that will help ensure our aging population will have access to good health care and be secure in their retirement.
I support the rights of women to make decision about their own bodies and have access to prescriptive medications and to be paid equally for their work. I will fight for the rights of all our citizens to be equal under the law, including the right to marry and adopt children. And I will fight against efforts to infringe on our voting rights.
I believe that we need to make responsible budget decisions – eliminating waste and abuse where possible and I support exploring public private partnerships to share some of the burdens we face in our communities.
I support advancing the use of renewable energy resources including wind and solar energy to reduce our dependence on foreign energy resources. I will work to grow our transit programs that will help take traffic off our roads.
My Campaign is People Powered!
Having worked as a Precinct captain/Co-captain for over 15 years, I am actively building a grassroots, neighbor to neighbor campaign that will be able to turn out voters in this off year election. During January and February we have knocked on over 500 doors and collected hundreds of petition signatures. This is laying the groundwork for a large field campaign across the district. Additionally, our campaign is hosting numerous meet and greets and coffees around the district so that I can speak directly to voters all across the 34th district.
