Primary Election Date: 08/29/2008
General Election Date: 11/04/2008
Who Am I?
Sen. Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961, and spent most of his childhood there, except for a brief time he and his family spent in Jakarta, Indonesia. After graduating high school, he moved to Los Angeles and New York before moving to Chicago to work as a community organizer.
In 1988, he began studying at Harvard Law School, where he would become the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. After graduation, he returned to Chicago to work as an attorney and a professor of constitutional law before being elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996.
In 2004, he was elected to the United States Senate from Illinois and is the first African American nominated by a major party to be President of the United States.
Why Am I Running?
Sen. Obama will work to end the war in Iraq, help insure the 47 million Americans without health insurance, to end the country’s dependence on foreign oil and save our planet from the climate crisis, and to end corporate lobbyist influence in Washington.
Hold Me Accountable!
As president, Sen. Obama will end the war in Iraq, which he opposed from the beginning, and instead turn America’s attention to real 21st century threats – terrorism, nuclear proliferation, climate change, poverty, genocide, and disease.
My DFA values:
Sen. Obama is dedicated to bringing major progressive change to the American people, expanding health coverage for the uninsured, ending the war in Iraq, and more. Still, he realizes the cost of our debt is a tremendous burden on America’s youth – robbing our cities of investment in roads and bridges, our children of investment in education and health care, and our seniors of investment in retirement security – and he will return our nation to a responsible fiscal policy.
My Campaign is People-Powered!
DFA members have supported Sen. Obama from the very beginning, which earned him one of the first “Dean Dozen” endorsements for his 2004 U.S. Senate race. Obama for America has been fueled by millions and millions of activists and small donors, making it the first presidential campaign truly run and funded by the American people since Howard Dean’s revolutionary 2004 campaign. With such overwhelming grassroots support, Sen. Obama will run a White House independent of corporate lobbyist influence and truly answerable to the American people.
Election for this campaign has passed.
