About the Watershed Issue

Lake Maumelle provides an abundant supply of drinking water for roughly 400,000 people here in Central Arkansas. My concern is that if we develop on this present source of drinking water, we risk threatening our future sources of drinking water for all of Central Arkansas. Little Rock, more than any other municipality is the greatest user of this source.

One thing I wish to pass is that we limit use of the watershed by placing a maximum capacity of 75,000 gallons per day on all subdivision wastewater lines pumping out of the watershed. I also support the recommendation of the Citizens Protecting Lake Maumelle Watershed to limit a minimum lot requirement of five acres per house in low slope areas and 10 acre lots for houses on high slope areas. Mind you, passing this, would apply to only Little Rock but I would be willing to listen, hold town hall meetings, learn even more, and work with the City Board to become an effective advocate on this issue. I would even be open to finding a way for the City of Little Rock to purchase the property in the watershed to preserve it.

My concern is the time to study this subject is over. We need to take action today to protect this precious resource.

Drew,

One thing I would highly recommend is looking at ways to lower the ammount of water that goes into the sewer system.  Most development is done with no regard to that, and often crazy things are done such as connecting downspouts to the sewer system.  You can sometimes delay or even minimize the need for additional water treatment capacity just by being careful about how much you put in.

- You are running for City Board?

By Cheryl on Jul 25, 2008 9:03 PM EDT

I recommended a more detailed post with link to your campaign site if you have one. Glad you posted here but it is a good chance to promote yourself and your work so think about that for next time. Duplicate posts also came up so maybe Tim or Danny can clean up the duplicate?

Howard Dean is first.

Water issues are HUGE for us right now too. We have a great candidate running for County Supervisor. I really need to do a diary on her. She is an original Deaniac to and was a superdelegate until she resigned to run. Former Chair of our County Democrats and State Party Vice Chair.

Also part of my AuditAZ election integrity group.

Yes, you better nip that in the bud now or you will be experiencing what we are here from our overdevelopment. Dry as a bone, global warming impacting us worse and now they are talking about having us drink toliet water. Conservation and controlling growth need to be the first priorities. Since they have been piping in CAP water people are having physical illnesses. Toxins 'purified' by toxins.

When they first tried this in 1992, I got really sick. Digestive and skin problems. I didn't realize it was from the water and thought it was suddenly an allergy to meat and became a vegetarian. Only later did I realized others were having problems and it was also ruining pipes. They stopped it for a little less than a decade then started it again and my area got to be one of the unlucky to get the CAP blend. Yuck! Tastes horrible too.

My skin and hair felt so nice in Austin and I actually didn't mind the taste of their tap water.

- City board candidates

and other "downballot" races are so, so important for us to be running for.  First of all, since most of us don't have huge connections (except for our connection to DFA of course!) it is easier for us to win the smaller races.  But the smaller races turn into the bigger races, etc.

Don't forget, Barack Obama started in the state legislature .... if he hadn't won that first small race he would not be where he is right now.

I have learned that even though they aren't the "sexy" ones, they are where real change happens.

- I like your positions, Drew

If I were not so broke, I would contribute to you. City and county elections are so essential and where the real changes happen.

The lightrail system you want to bring in is what we need here and tried. The big industry shot us down then put up a horrible RTA plan, which when it started losing, hacked the election and stole it. That is what my election integrity work with AuditAZ and our lawsuit is focused on. People think stolen elections are all about partisanship-- one party stealing from another, but they are more about corporate power stealing to keep and expand that power.

- Also agree "Time to study it" is over

By Cheryl on Jul 25, 2008 9:29 PM EDT

That is always a tactic they use to stall then 10 years later, no progress and the water is gone. The other one they use is "let's form a committee to look at the issue." It is also a way to not take accountabilty but to spread the blame when they f@#k it up.

I have seen plenty of that dysfunction both in the corporate world and in politics.

I need to try and raise money if I am going to win this race. Also, if you agree with my positions, please send an email to political@democracyforamerica.com and ask them to invest early in my campaign. We have a chance to make a difference for the better here in Little Rock. I will invest my time, go door to door, build the coalitions, but we need to raise the funds too. Wow, I wish politics wasn't about raising money though. I miss the days I read about and learned about when it was about making speeches, debates, and the old-fashioned way of campaigning! Still we have to get elected to make the difference.
