Who am I?

I am a public school teacher, Navy veteran, father of three small children, married 22 years to my lovely wife Naomi. I currently teach computer programming and serve as the Athletic Director at Max S. Hayes High School in Cleveland, Ohio.

Why am I running?

I am running because I feel that my current representative is not looking out for the interests of middle class families in our district. As a public school teacher, I have seen first hand how special interests have put our schools and local governments at risk. My opponent has aligned herself with special interests and extreme agendas that embrace a failed "trickle-down" economic model while attacking the rights of women, workers, and the middle class.

My Goals

My top three policy goals while in office are:

Restoring cuts to the local government fund that have put pressure on local governments and homeowners.

Addressing Ohio's school funding problem (our school funding model is unconstitutional).

Closing failing for-profit charter schools and investing in our public schools and in early childhood education and career and technical education.

My DFA Values

I will stand up for our public schools by ensuring that they are properly funded and able to provide a quality education to all our children. I will stand up for our senior citizens by opposing cuts to tax relief that so many of our seniors rely upon to make ends meet.

As an educator and a Navy veteran, I know the importance of investing in our children and in providing for the safety of our citizens. I have seen first-hand how global economic interests have pulled our nation into "wars of choice", and I have also seen how our troops have been stretched thin while contractors and private interests have profited during these wars.

I believe that people should have the right to worship as they choose (or not) without being pressured to meet the standard of a majority faith. I believe that people should have the right to marry whomever they choose and have all the rights/privileges of marriage regardless of gender or sexual orientation. I believe that we must aggressively resist further intrusion into our personal lives.

My Campaign is People Powered!

I have a core of supporters and like-minded constituents who are excited to have a fresh face on the political scene in Northeast Ohio. I have never held an elected office, but I am excited about the opportunity that lies ahead. I was active as a leader in my union when we opposed the attack on collective bargaining known as Senate Bill 5 in Ohio, and led buses of teachers to the state house to demonstrate. We made over 500,000 phone calls in that campaign, and I was a member of our leadership team that was integral part of the coalition that led the repeal of the law in a referendum in 2011.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
