Peter Silva for Congress
| Name: | Peter Silva for Congress |
| Office: | US Congress FL-07 |
| Website: | petersilvaforcongress.com |
Background:
My name is Peter Silva I am proud to say that I am a native Floridian born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and lived throughout most of the State throughout my life. I am a husband of fourteen years, and a father of two wonderful boys. . I am from a middle-class background and worked my way through college. I have been in business management for over seventeen years primarily in finance, and retail/ commercial banking. I have been a VP in retail banking in the central Florida area for the last six years. I have a record of accomplishment in negotiating deals and working with people from all backgrounds.
Goals:
I have been brought up to believe that you further each next generation. I feel that we have reversed this over the last eight years to the point where it will take leadership to return us back to the level we should be. John Mica who is in office now has ties to powerful Washington lobbyist. He was one himself. This special interest needs to be removed from office and replaced with someone who will look out for the interest of Floridians.
Issues:
Eliminate our dependace on foreign oil.The 2000 commodity futures modernization act has been one of the recession’s largest contributors. This act had what was called the “Enron Loophole”. The loophole was drafted by lobbyist for Enron with support from Senator Phil Gramm seeking a deregulated atmosphere for their experiment Enron online. The loophole allowed for most over the counter trades and electronic trades to be exempt. This means there was no transparency. House Resolution 6124 “The Farm Bill” finally closed the loophole on June 18, 2008. President George W. Bush vetoed the bill. However, the House, and the Senate had enough votes to override the veto. Rep. John Mica voted against the resolution, which is easy to understand when you find that his brother is executive director of the pro-drilling Florida Petroleum Council.
Healthcare reform. Peter’s father was the head of maintenance for Glendale Federal bank in Fort Lauderdale for over twenty years. My mother was a nurse for her entire career. She was injured on the job in 1993 and not able to work in her profession any longer.. Workers Comp took her through the ringers and she was only given a fraction of what she would have earned. She then in 1994 was injured again in a car accident when a car came around the corner and ran right into her car door at a speed of over 45 MPH. She passed away on January 5, 2002 of a massive heart attack. She would not go to the hospital to have her ailments tended to due to the cost of the procedures. After the accidents, on the job injuries, and deteriorating heath who would insure her?
Employee rights- I support the Employee Free Choice Act. I want to see this succeed, and protected.
Education- I know I am only to list three. However, this gets back to furthering the next generation. We have to balance the scales and fix the injustice in the system that strips the tools away from our educators.
Grassroots Support:
Getting the word out. I have lived in district 7 for over six years, and I have worked in the communities throughout the district with all individuals not just Dems. This incumbent has not had any challenger that has been able to get better than 42 to 43% against him in the general election. Last election even with the excitement that Obama brought to the party the candidate only received a 38% showing. John Mica did not even run a campaign against her. I am what some would call a new comer. I bring a new direction of performance not politics approach. I have support from Non Partisans, and even moderate Repubs. I know that I can win the General Election.
DFA Values:
I personally feel that we should look at what is spent as an investment in Americans, and try to whenever possible make the investment geared towards job creation. This can be done with fiscal responsibility to hold the programs and administrators accountable to ensure that special interest to ensure no manipulation occurs and maintains the highest level of honesty and integrity.
