Who am I?
I was sworn into Congress on January 3rd, 2013. In my first term serving the people of northeastern Pennsylvania, I have stepped forward as a leader, being elected Democratic Freshman Class Co-President by his colleagues. Further, I have introduced over a dozen pieces of legislation that aim to help seniors, veterans and the middle class, the vast majority of which have been introduced with bi-partisan support.
I was appointed to serve on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where he is a Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Job Creation, and Regulatory Affairs. I am also a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.
During my time in congress, I have introduced a leading-number of pieces of legislation, the vast majority of which have been introduced with bipartisan support. Introduced bills have proposed expanded rights and benefits for veterans, seniors, consumers, and college students, among others. My legislative portfolio has also focused heavily on protecting the environment from exemptions and loopholes in fundamental environmental protections statutes and promoting equity for wage-grade federal workers at federal installations like, for example, VA hospitals, federal prisons, and military depots. I've been independently recognized as a leader in gaining cosponsorships and high-powered support within the House of Representatives for his bills.
Prior to coming to Congress, I worked as an attorney, with Munley, Munley & Cartwright for 25 years. I spent his time at the firm fighting for the middle class and for working families and is a proud member of the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice.
I am a magna cum laude graduate of Hamilton College, where I earned Bachelor of Arts in History in 1983; and am a Law Review graduate from University of Pennsylvania’s Law School, where I earned a Juris Doctorate in 1986.
I am married to Marion Munley Cartwright and am the father of two sons, Jack and Matthew.
Why am I running?
I am running for re-election to Congress because I am continually inspired by the leadership and progressive vision of northeastern Pennsylvania. We need leaders in Washington who are committed to addressing our nation’s toughest challenge and who understand what it means to fight for the American dream. I believe that when you retire, you will not age in poverty; when you are sick, you will receive health care; and when you have fallen on hard times, this nation will find a way to help pick you up.
My aim is to continue to have a solid record of voting for legislation that benefit the middle class and working families. I have put together a stellar team both in Washington, DC and throughout the 17th Congressional district, comprised of folks who are dedicated to helping every constituent that walks through our doors.
Additionally, I am dedicated to strengthening our middle class. The crown jewel of American infrastructure is our education system and we must do more to guarantee that every child has access to quality education. Lastly, our labor unions form the backbone of our working class and are under attack. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure that our labor unions only become stronger.
My DFA Values
DFA represents the same values that I have dedicated my life’s work as a courtroom lawyer and now as a Congressman to. My life experiences have shaped my priorities and inspired me to fight every day to better our nation and create opportunities for all Americans.
My 25 years in the courtroom were guided by the needs of everyday folks and solidified my dedication to helping others.
I took that lesson on with me as a member of Congress. As a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I have dedicated myself to fighting every day to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; investing in education in the most high need areas while continuing to expand higher education opportunities to those more well off.
Whether that means fighting on behalf of the new industry, making sure our children have access to an excellent education, standing up for justice or working to strengthen our economy – the people in northeastern Pennsylvania will continue to be my top priority.
Northeastern Pennsylvania is a true working class region and a prime example of what we must do to reinvigorate the middle class. But it is a tale of two economies, where after a booming mining industry faded, where workers saw their wages and lives improve, the region is searching for a new identity. This is a challenge I am fighting to solve.
My Campaign is People Powered!
My campaign will have a deep focus on a volunteer led, grassroots-based campaign that centers on neighbor-to-neighbor communication. We are planning a sophisticated field programs that will reach out to voters directly, on the phones and at their doors.
Over the past two years, I have been lucky enough to have a dedicated and diverse base of supporters that are now my campaign’s greatest strength. We will use these community leaders to bring our campaign to neighborhoods throughout northeastern Pennsylvania.
