Who am I?

I am a sixth-generation Arizonan. I attended elementary school in Chandler, and junior high and high school in Prescott. I earned my Associate of Arts Degree from Cochise College, and my Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Arizona. I have my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration at Grand Canyon University. I have been a teacher for ten years, and have taught at the kindergarten through college levels. Before becoming a teacher, I worked in corporate business management and owned and operated my own small business in Sierra Vista. As a single-mother, I raised my two children on my family homestead in St. David. I have been a community activist and political leader for over two decades. I currently live in central Phoenix, teach high school English, write curriculum, and train teachers. I am running for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction because it is time to put an educator back in charge of education for a stronger, better-educated Arizona.

About Me
I am an educator, mother, and former small business owner. I am the only candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction who has degrees in education, holds a teaching certificate, and has taught in the K-12 classroom. I am the only candidate who has written curriculum aligned to the Common Core and taught under the Common Core standards. I train teachers in the curriculum and standards, and help prepare teachers and students to meet the new rigor therein. I am a leader in my teachers' association and have been actively involved in developing the new teacher evaluation structure and preparing teachers to meet the expectations of the evaluation. I will be a strong advocate for parents, students, teachers and public education for the state of Arizona.

Why am I running?

I am running for Superintendent of Public Instruction because it is time to put an educator back in charge of education in Arizona!

We need an informed decision maker who understands what education is all about. Children know less now than they did four years ago. There needs to be a change and I am that change.

My Goals

Leadership and Advocacy:
● Arizona deserves a knowledgeable leader and strong advocate for education.
● As the only Certified teacher candidate, Sharon will fight for better education.
● As an educator, Sharon recognizes the needs of the classroom, parents, children, other teachers, and the State of Arizona.
Equal Opportunity:
● All students deserve an equitable education.
● Equitable and adequate baseline funding would relieve the undue burden on local taxpayers.
Shared Responsibility:
● All Arizonans play a role and share in the responsibility of educating our future.
● Shared responsibility means the education of these young people is not just the responsibility of students, parents and teachers. We all share it!

My DFA Values

I am not just another politician I am the real deal. I believe that a teacher who has been in the trenches of education has a better perspective of the entire process. I understand what is needed to give our students, parents and the state of Arizona the best possible outcome. The outcome that we all want is that all students in the state of Arizona get the best education possible.
“A Real Teacher Matters”
I have been a member of AEA for many years and have already gone to the senate during discuss of the budget, to ask for more education funding. The current Superintendent John Huppenthal was nowhere to be found. I will be the advocate education needs.
I have been a member of DFA for 10 years and believe that this organization matters also!

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
