Who Am I?
I am a 54 year-old Native-American/Mexican-American. I am a native of Southern California. I have lived, worked and attended college in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys (The core cities of the new 25th Congressional District) for decades. I am a nationally known fine artist who also works in the entertainment industry. I live with my husband of 16 years, Daniel Head, in Elizabeth Lake, California, a small town of 1800 people in North Los Angeles County.
I am involved in the Occupy Movement and I have been an activist for 20 years. I am running for US Congress to be a voice for working people, students, veterans, the elderly and everyone else who feels voiceless and powerless under the current corporate-dominated government.
Why Am I Running?
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's budget plan to end Medicare an Social Security inspired me to run this year.
My priority is to protect Social Security and Medicare from legislation that aims to eliminate these services for the most vulnerable Americans. If you contributed to these insurance programs, then you earned the right to guaranteed benefits. Social Security and Medicare are commitments made to all Americans and should not be cut, privatized or eliminated to reduce the federal deficit.
Deregulation and privatization of government services have ruined our economy and corrupted our democracy. The Bill of Rights secures our civil liberties but injustice grows because we are being deprived of our economic rights. Instead of citizens, we are nothing but consumers of healthcare, education, energy and public utilities, or clients for an ever-expanding private prison industry. Worker and consumer rights taken for granted in the past are swept away with waivers and binding arbitration agreements because you cannot obtain credit, employment, or receive medical treatment in this country without signing away your right to sue corporations who swindle you, injure you, or cause a death with their negligence. I want to represent you in Congress and enact legislation that counters these inequities and ends corporate personhood.
I want to work towards a government that works for all of us instead of corporations who can pay for lobbyists to enact legislation that benefits them at the expense the 99%.
Hold Me Accountable!
Introduce regulation to protect homes from unlawful foreclosures by national banks and protect consumers from usury interest rates from other abuses by financial institutions and credit-reporting agencies.
I would introduce a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United v. the FEC and end corporate personhood.
My DFA values:
All men and women should enjoy equal rights, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, or any other artificial dividing line someone may choose to invent. We are all humans, and all deserve equal respect and opportunity. Each human merits respect, and each human deserves access to the resources required to live a happy and healthy life; no one should be homeless, hungry, or lack medical care.
Our democratic ideals have been warped and our democratic institutions have been usurped to serve the very wealthiest members of our societies. I will no longer sit idly by as governments and corporations trample our civil liberties, steal our wealth, destroy our environment and starve us in a land of abundance. Governments, corporations, and banks are created by people, to serve the needs of humanity. If those needs are not being met, those governments, corporations, and banks can and should be modified or replaced. No government, corporation, or bank, has any inherent right to exist nor any other right, save those rights granted to it by its creators, the people.
The insatiable accumulation of privilege and property by those at the very top must end. It is essential that we end the corporate control of our political systems. The influence of financial contributions and expensive lobbying must be taken out of the equation. We believe that among the steps towards achieving this are the public financing of elections, reversing the Citizens United Supreme Court decision, and a constitutional amendment ending corporate personhood.
My Campaign is People-Powered!
I am collecting 3000 signatures in lieu of the $1740 filing fee to run for congress. I have a dozen committed volunteers collecting signature and lending their support.
I attend 2 local Occupy GAs a week and other local community events; Sierra Club meetings, city & town council meetings and I also go to events like farmers markets and gallery openings where I can meet people. I go door-to-door with volunteers as well.
