Endorsement Spotlight:
Joseline Peña-Melnyk

Joseline Peña-Melnyk
U.S. House of Representatives, Maryland's 4th Congressional District

As a Maryland Delegate representing Prince Georges and Anne Arundel counties, Peña-Melnyk has been the lead sponsor of 50 bills pushing for greater fairness and equality - fighting to increase the minimum wage, expand opportunities for minority businesses, broaden consumer protections, crack down on mortgage fraud, and create state apprenticeship and workforce development programs in secondary schools and community colleges. She was a proud cosponsor of the Lilly Ledbetter Civil Rights Restoration Act to strengthen Maryland’s laws to enforce fair wages regardless of gender, and the lead sponsor of “Lauryn’s Law,” which requires suicide prevention training for school counselors. She is an active member of both the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and Women Legislators of Maryland, and prior to serving in the legislature, served as a prosecutor, as a criminal defense lawyer, and as a guardian for children who were incarcerated, abused and neglected. Peña-Melnyk is running for Congress to build an economy that creates opportunities for everyone, not just for the wealthiest few, to challenge the disproportionately high rates of minority incarceration, to stand up against racism and discrimination in policing and criminal justice systems so that all communities are safe, and to improve education and employment access for hardworking families across the district.

About the Endorsement Process

The driving force behind all DFA endorsements is our members. We recognize that all politics is local and that what is considered progressive in Los Angeles may be very different from what's considered progressive in Louisville. For this reason, DFA does not have a litmus test of specific progressive positions for which a candidate must stand. Our endorsement is heavily weighted based on these questions:

• Will the candidate move the progressive movement forward in their community?
• Does the candidate have substantial support from our local members?
• Do the candidate's positions and policies fit into the broader progressive movement?
• Is the campaign people-powered and the candidate working to win?

If you have questions, or want to let us know about a candidate in your neighborhood, please call us at (802) 651-3200 or email us at [email protected] .
