Our big push to register voters in Asbury Park and Neptune is under two weeks away - Monday, October 6th!

On October 4, 2004, a small group of us, along with the Bus For Change, spent an afternoon in Asbury Park registering voters at several locations. Together, we registered 350 people!!! Like our upcoming event, October 4, 2004 was a Monday, and very close to the NJ registration deadline.

Only 6% of eligible voters in Asbury Park actually voted in 2000. It was the lowest turnout in the county, and one of the lowest in the State. 2004 was improved (I like to think we had something to do with that), though still way below the State average.

We hope that October 6th will be our most productive GOTV event yet!

Here are some more details on the event:

We'll meet at 2 PM at the Bus For Change parked on Main Street in Asbury Park (location to be announced). Boris Kofman (and possibly others) will give us all a crash course on voter registration, and prepare us to respond to many questions we'll likely be asked. We'll then fan out to several locations throughout Asbury (and Neptune of we have enough people) and register away!

We'll choose locations that are highly visible to people walking and driving by. Each location will have a table, registration forms, and a map of the town's voting districts and polling locations.

We'll make signs to hold up for passer-bys. "Voter Registration Deadline Is October 14th", "Register to Vote Here", "Change the World - Vote!" - are some examples we can make.

We'll continue until around 6:30, or when vehicle and foot traffic die down.

At the Monmouth Democracy for America (DFA) meeting two weeks ago, many of you had great ideas to add to our event. Like a sign up sheet for residents who would like election day reminder phone calls. We'll definitely do that! Please send me any other ideas you might have!
