Friends,
Gosh-darn-it-all, by golly, gee willikers, Sarah Palin has struck again!
She is showing her mettle with right-up-to-the-minute original thinking, demonstrating her unquestionable ability to preside over the United States Senate and to step in, should events require, to be the next leader of the Free World. Well, whatever that term means these days, because who is to say that we are really free, and many would dispute that America leads anything anymore.
To what am I referring? On Saturday, Governor Palin accused
Senator Obama of "palling around with" terrorists (this is not to be confused
with Palining around with wolf hunters). And by inference, if one has
pals who are terrorists, then you must be a creator of terror yourself.
She said this of Obama at rallies in Colorado and Los Angeles . There
is only one fly in the ointment. It isn't a new charge. And it did not stick when
it first emerged this summer. Go to the following link:
The story relates to Bill Ayers and the Weather
Underground. Friends, what happened 40 years ago was a time when the
United States National Guard was KILLING students on a university
campus. Remember Kent State? I do. I would call that terror. It was
a time of cold war terror, when we illegally invaded Cambodia without
telling anyone and were napalming the heck out of anything that moved
on the Southeast Asian landscape. It was a time of terror, when we
feared nuclear retaliation from China if we invaded North Vietnam. It
was a time of terror, when the Soviet Union appeared to have a
monolithic stranglehold on all of its satellites in the Warsaw Pact.
Against that background, things got ugly among young people who were being drafted against their will, with the prospect of coming home in a body bag from Vietnam. I was a part of that generation and got caught up in protesting. Illegal activities were a daily event, from burning draft cards to blocking streets, occupying colleges and shutting things down. And yes, there were crazies who engaged in violence under the banner of civil disobedience. If only the German people had reacted this way to the Nazis rise to power.
So, Sarah Palin (and the thinkers behind her accusations) try to paint Barack Obama as a terrorist simply because he grew up in that generation (actually he was a bit young to be in the thick of it) and got to know some of the activists who engaged in wrong conduct. Who among us did NOT know some activist? If you were a student in the 60s and 70s, it was impossible not to know some loonies - unless you lived under a rock or attended a monastery.
Actually, I think it is a good thing that Sarah is trying to engage in character assassination. That's because the charge is so ludicrous, that it makes the accuser seem to be even more extreme. Sure, some Americans will buy the goods. But most in the middle will recognize it for what it is - a desperate attempt to change reality. And what is that reality? The truth is that Sarah Palin is a terrorist.
She is not the bomb-throwing kind. She is more of a subversive version. Governor Palin stated, in her debate, that the US Vice President is a member of two branches of government and ought to have more power. It was one of many comments that just flowed along with the rest of an entertaining spectacle, as she dodged, weaved, bobbed and babbled without responding to questions. But this one response indicated a truly radical outlook which would make our founding fathers shiver with fear.
George Washington and our patriarchs specifically designed a less powerful executive needing the consent of the governed. America was not the place for a new, more rational, more local monarchy. It was and is the place where a powerful legislative body would moderate the power of the executive - and where a judiciary would establish the rule of law as our supreme governing authority.
So when Sarah Palin starts talking about using the Constitution to expand the powers of the Vice President, above and beyond the amazing construction dreamed up by Dick Cheney, that ought to strike terror into every thinking American, especially those of the conservative temperament. After all are not they trying to conserve what is good about our system?
The real terror right now is Sarah Palin, not some 30 year old relationship from the Vietnam era. The fact that a sitting governor of a state is saying this should be cause for shock and awe. Indeed, what does Mrs. Palin think of the Alaskan state legislature? Well, you don't need to ask what many in that body think of her; the rosy picture of her popularity in Alaska does not extend to its own state government where she has made many enemies.
OK, no problem. I have a solution. Governor Palin has shown an ability in the past to attend institutions of higher learning (in fact, MANY of them). Perhaps she can enroll at the University of Chicago Law School. A course in Constitutional Law might be an eye opener. But she had better be careful. I hear that they have a Professor on the faculty who has had past associations with radical groups. It is even possible that the entire University is a hotbed of terrorism. In fact, other societies have been down this road before.
We only have to recognize our fear, run scared and do the obvious thing. There is a terrorist under every rock. We NEED a strong man (or woman) at the top. Give 'em more power. Don't let that old piece of paper, the US Constitution, get in the way. Just elect McCain and Palin. They will clean these universities, these cesspools of subversive terrorists, right up.
If we want stability and security, there is no doubt about it. Follow the models of Russia, Germany and China. Just get rid of these pesky academics and we will all sleep more soundly at night. Obama and his terrorist pals better watch out.
