In a bit of news that can only be described as poetic, Howard Dean plans to start registering voters this morning at the Crawford, Texas, Community Center, according to a press release that came across my inbox last evening.
According to the press release, he should be out in the parking lot at 8:45 local time...which is just about now.
Dean, we are told, will be joined by Representative Jim Dunnam and McLennan County Democratic Chair John Cullar.
Later today, Dean has a similar event planned for Austin, where he will also be giving a keynote address at the Netroots Nation Convention.

By linda b on Jul 17, 2008 3:17 PM EDTI think that bush will give up his fake ranch in crawford after leaving our white house and move to dubai or paraquay.
Good riddance.
...i'd prefer that mr. bush remain within easy reach of us law enforcement--so maybe paraguay, not so much.
- it's just a piece of paper but an important one ...

Phil - you have mail
- Iowa has walk in registration on election day, but Republicans snuck in a provision to verify with the Auditor in 48 hours, so GOTV will extend past election day as we give rides.

By fake consultant on Jul 17, 2008 9:02 PM EDT...mail-in ballots, and some of those locales allow votes to be received that are postmarked until midnight of election day...suggesting that quite a few races wil be decided several days after the polls close.
as the voting by mail trend continues to expand, it will become more and more difficult to wrap up elections on election day.
If Republicans ever succeed in getting a National ID law passed, Democrats need to insist that it double as a voter registration card so that every American be free to vote.
...the purpose of "voter id", from an r perspective, is that it ensures those who are citizens but don't have id cannot vote...and most of those voters would be inherently disinclined to vote r, so...it becomes a simple way to help "clean" the voting rolls to the rs favor.
removing the requirement for id empowers all voters, and is more consistent with big d "democratic" principles.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The controversial interrogation technique of waterboarding has served a "valuable" purpose and does not constitute torture, former Attorney General John Ashcroft told a House committee Thursday.

<!--===========CAPTION==========-->John Ashcroft says waterboarding yielded more valuable information than other interrogation techniques.<!--===========/CAPTION=========-->
Testifying on the Bush administration's interrogation rules before the House Judiciary Committee, Ashcroft defended the technique while answering a question from Rep. Howard Coble, R-North Carolina.
"Waterboarding, as we all know, is a controversial issue. Do you think it served a beneficial purpose?" the congressman asked.
"The reports that I have heard, and I have no reason to disbelieve them, indicate that they were very valuable," Ashcroft said, adding that CIA Director George Tenet indicated the "value of the information received from the use of enhanced interrogation techniques -- I don't know whether he was saying waterboarding or not, but assume that he was for a moment -- the value of that information exceeded the value of information that was received from all other sources."
- It's still torture, asshole, in violation of the Geneva Convention
By Huron John on Jul 17, 2008 6:04 PM EDT- waterboarding did serve an important purpose...
By fake consultant on Jul 17, 2008 9:54 PM EDT...as we are hearing tonight, this administration version of reality yielded useful polling information that was helpful for the rs in the '04 cycle...as did "swiftboating".
this cycle we expect the rs to attempt the same framing, and this was one reason for the bomber stories of a couple weeks ago--rather than framing the purchase as a "terrorist war" issue, i'm trying to counterframe that as a "economics/consumer affairs" issue.
that said, john is right...it is torture.
my suggestion: we might be well served to frame this torture debate as an "efficiency" issue when talking to our conservative friends--that is to say, torture, moral or not, doesn't work anyway, and that's why we shouldn't be doing it
