By Kelley Freeman | 1 comments Get ready and get excited for USC’s annual drag show, Birdcage! This year’s show takes place on Tuesday, March 19th in the Russell House Ballroom at 8 p.m. Mocking the gender binary, Birdcage serves to entertain students while leaving a message that the essence of a person transcends the physical male and female roles ingrained into our heads. Performers will be answering questions from the audience about gender identity. The largest nonathletic student event, Birdcage began in 1997 as a program of National Coming Out Day and moved to its current home in the Russell House Ballroom in 1998. Last year’s headliner, Shangela, took the stage with an amazing performance, dazzling the crowd with flawless lip syncing and dancing. Miss Dorae Saunders will headline birdcage this year. Dorae made a fabulous appearance on the third season of “America’s Got Talent” and is the current reigning Miss USofA at Large. Also performing will be familiar faces to the Columbia drag scene, Miss Patti O’Furniture, Mister Oliver Clothesoff, Carla Cox, Marina Diamante, Veronica La Blank and the current reigning Miss Gaymecock, Nyla Diore! Birdcage is a free event to all students and faculty with a valid Carolina Card and is cohosted by the BGLSA and Carolina Productions!
