A flier I'm printing up for our County Party Picnic.  Please comment if I should change something.. Also help spread the message that voters are the Political experts.

You are a Political Expert!

Don't let the talking heads on tv and politicians promoting apathy and divisiveness win. You are needed in the political process. You are the political expert. Take a moment to write a list of things you see in your community that need to be fixed, addressed, or improved. Look around and pay attention to those around you who are struggling to play by the rules and stay above water. The Republican "every man for themself" mentality, their "government can't address the problem" policies, are meant to keep people apathetic, disengaged, and fighting amongst each other for the scraps left over. In a Democracy WE are the government and we should NEVER vote for someone who says WEcan't find ways to address problems in our country!! Our political culture tells us when we see a man beaten by the side of the road that you pass on the other side and don't look back. Its up to us to be leaders in the community who say in one united voice: "That's not our style. Those aren't our values. America can be better than that. That's why we are Democrats!"

 Out there in the cul-de-sacs and the strip malls, people are months behind in their mortgage payments, maxed out on their plastic, handing over their car keys to the lien-holders, and feeding their kids Spam filets. Truckers get paid less for their loads than the cost of transporting the load. The airlines have financial cancer and will be dead in eighteen months. Container ship costs are heading out-of-sight. Municipalities are going broke. A weekend flood just destroyed part of the Midwest corn crop. And, of course, oil prices took a jagged turn upward last Friday en route to their next stop: $150-a-barrel.


The New York Times reported Monday that rural Americans are being hit hardest by the rise in gasoline prices. Duh. It's worst, naturally, in the big southern states where wages are low and the distances are vast. There's a reason why Nascar is the second-biggest religion down there: the automobile rescued southerners from the tyranny of geography. Cheap gas allowed them to build a "new " economy based mainly on the construction of suburban sprawl. In the process it deified the pickup truck. Guess what? The rural South made a big mistake. The Dukes of Hazard show is now drawing to a close. They are about to take a turn back to being what they were before the Second World War: an agricultural backwater. God knows what will happen to asteroid belts of "production housing" and big box shopping outside the relatively tiny pre-automobile cores of places like Houston and Atlanta.

I always felt like Tim was my friend because he reminded me so much of people here in my own home town, an hour away from his.

I especially appreciated that he was proud to say he was from Buffalo and proud to be a booster for the area even after he stopped living there. Here in Western New York that isn't always the case with people who leave here for the big time. Here in Rochester, Cab Calloway was one rising star who denied ever living here even though he was raised here. Ditto NYC art maven Mary Bacon, who pointedly denied attending the high school she damn well did attend.

I find denial of one's roots a sign of insecurity and Tim Russert was nothing if not secure in his sense of self. I feel terrible for his family in a personal way, since my own father also dropped dead at work of a massive coronary while I was in college.

I wasn't a habitual watcher of Meet the Press but I always liked Tim Russert and feel somewhat bereft tonight.

Especially when I lived in New York and New Jersey. I never felt ashamed of where I came from. Afterall, it isn't something we have control over. I remember a guy with a really thick Jersey accent would make fun of mine (he thought I was from the Chicago area). I remember thinking he must be really insecure about himself and maybe his own accent or why would he be so bothered by mine?

the idea of a list, and the passing of Tim Russert, got me thinking about how many subjects that man was an amateur expert on as he prepared intensively for guest after guest(he was one of the hardest working men in his business)

Tim Russert asked a whole lot of tough questions because he did the homework.

my expertise is agriculture, national crews from PBS,NPR,CBS, and a couple of national farm magazines have come and done interviews of me, I never faced a Russert but I'll bet he would have understood what makes the corn market move

Why are people mean and nasty or say mean and nasty things about another, then when they die, suddenly they are saints. Ever think about that?

If people have anything nice to say about me, I would like them to tell me while I am still alive. I certainly hear enough of the nasties, lol. And when I die, if they couldn't stand me then don't say nice things when I am dead either. If you have to say anything, just say I couldn't stand that @#$#%$!

Really, at least it is honest and what will I care? I am dead and my spirit is on the next adventure and knowing my dark sense of humor, I would get a kick out of it. And I don't want any somber funeral either. I want a big party with lots of good food, good music and everyone having a great time. Celebrate the life that was. We do enough mourning here on earth.

So if you all hear I did out of the blue, throw a darn party why don't you!

I need help. I just went and looked at the scholarship votes for me. I had 90, I have a copy of all the names and what they wrote if they wrote anything. However, when I go to my list it only shows 89. Then when I click on the voters it gives 88. I know there are 90 because I have the names. What is up?

Also, I am trying to email people and thank them if they aren't regular bloggers to see the thanks here. One person voted, then disappeared, now he is back but when I click on his ID to send him a message I get an error screen that "access denied" one.

So, what is up with that? Still have people that could not vote. Sarah John in VA is another one that tried yesterday or the day before and could not vote.

Anyway, thank you Tom and Annilow for the votes today. I especially know that Annilow tried and tried so she had to be very persistent, lol. Much appreciated to all the bloggers here and on HEP.

Another computer thing, when I went to RSVP for the Night training, by my name it says: "Tucson,
0 # TODO - status" What is up with that? I am on "To Do" status and a zero? lol No one else has that by their names.

I remember getting gaffed for my accent in college by, yes, a Joisey Goil and another one wiith a very thick western PA accent, which has some commonalities with the New Jersey accent.

I think you might be onto something. Until I went to college I wasn't aware I had an accent!! LOL!

I modified it over the four years to the point that 35 years later people here ask me where I'm from (I'm from here.). We're known for nasal talk, especially a nasal "a" sound. I don't do that one anymore.

  • Ending sentences with a preposition (it is a common thing in the Midwest for some reason)

I spoke with 2 friends of mine today who both voted for BO; one with zest, the other was an anti-HC vote.  Both women.  And both are upset with BO so far.  Both are very progressive.

Can s/o start a candle for them?  I don't know how to.

What about the pets?  Are they being left behind?  Is the humane society doing anything?

Losing a beloved pet is like losing a family member.  The flood victims shouldn't have to lose their homes AND their pets.

...and I keep thinking of 2012 and the end of the Mayan calendar...and a birthing of planetary love.   We seem to be in the process of birthing....and dying.
