John McCain was the only United States Senator who skipped a vote on an energy bill to channel $13 billion in tax breaks for Big Oil into alternative energy development. The bill came out one vote short -- but Exxon John's friends in Big Oil came out one vote ahead.

Earlier this month the Rocky Mountain News reported an announcement made by the DNCC CEO, Leah Daughtry and their Permanent Convention Chair, Speaker Nancy Pelosi about the "Green Delegate Challenge". Through a partnership with Native Energy, the DNCC will offer rewards to the delegation(s) who demonstrate the highest level of commitment to offsetting their carbon footprint from attending this year's historic Democratic National Convention being held on August 25th through 28th in Denver, Colorado.

Nuclear Agnosticism Is Bad Policy

Corbett Kroehler for district 8If you find yourself nodding as you read the following post, please consider voting for me in the Grassroots All-Star list. As a Congressman, I will fight hard to assure that our energy policies are sustainable and just.

______________________________________________

With all due respect to Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, what America needs as we struggle to quench an almost bottomless thirst for electricity is a candid discussion about nuclear fission, not bland statements which amount to saying, “I’ll have to take a hard look at it once I’m in the White House.”

Nuclear Power PlantThey’re not good enough!

During my 4-year tenure on the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club of Central Florida (where my duties emphasized energy issues and the results of global warming), I tried to keep an open mind about the realities of expanding electrical power generation to my state, region and country. I listened to many arguments in favor of nuclear fission but never could bring myself past a key reality:

>> nuclear power is neither green nor renewable.

We could argue about the relative merits of nuclear fission versus fossil fuels but I doubt that I could be swayed. After all, uranium must be mined, shipped and processed and then, of course, we have radioactive waste which has to go somewhere.

The Story Of Stuff explains it to us very well. Our economy has shifted so completely toward consumption that only sweeping, fundamental change will help us halt and ultimately reverse the effects of climate change before it’s too late.

How do we recognize such change when we see it? Members of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network know the answer very well because they gave all of us an example on Saturday, December 8. See it for yourself in the video below.

DON'T LET CONGRESS SELL YOU OUT! A Solar Nation Action Alert

Solar Nation Action Alert

DON'T LET CONGRESS SELL YOU OUT!

The Future of Clean Power is in the Balance

Here's the situation:  In order to get enough bipartisan support for the 2007 Congressional Energy Bill, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid are favoring a bill that would have NO SUPPORT FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY.
The two Democrats have decided not to include critical tax credits for solar and wind in the federal energy package.  This will be disastrous for a country trying to wean itself off of foreign oil and fight climate change.  It will have a chilling effect on citizens wanting to install solar energy systems, and for companies capable of performing this work.

It’s hard to believe that less than a month after Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work educating the world about the dangers of global warming, the US is considering passing energy legislation that does nothing for renewable electricity.  But that’s exactly what our Congressional leaders are considering.

Can you make a call to your own legislators as soon as possible to get them to tell these leaders that they must support clean energy?

With Congress back in session, renewable energy proponents are girding for a battle over legislation that could make or break the nascent solar power industry.  full article: http://blogs.business2.com/greenwombat/2007/11/solar-showdown.html

Out of Balance: ExxonMobil's Impact on Climate Change

Written by: Susan Rowe on Nov 26, 2007 2:59 AM EST

From Joe Public Films Out Of Balance: ExxonMobil's Impact on Climate Change shows the influence that the largest company in the world has on governments, the media and citizens and what can be done about global warming. While the Earth's climate is pushed further out of balance by increasing use of fossil fuels, ExxonMobil continues to assert undue influence around the world—making record profits while ignoring climate science for which there has been overwhelming consenus for over ten years.

Out of Balance does not just critique ExxonMobil, it also offers challenging, large-scale ideas for the global social changes that must take place if there's any chance of having a livable planet for future generations.

Music: "The Last Stop" by Satan's Teardrops

Out of Balance is included in the Sierra Club's Energy Film Festival which will screen in over eighty locations around the country.

Arctic Oil Rush In High Gear!

Written by: David Reiter on Aug 1, 2007 7:47 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy for Environmental Awareness

Last year, I had written a blogpost about the coming Arctic Oil Rush and the players that were involved. In short, I wrote about oil and shipping interests moving in tandem with their respective governments to move full steam ahead to exploit the remaining 1/4 of the world's oil supply beneath the Arctic Pole. I referenced treaties that entitled nations to certain economic zones in accordance with proximity parameters, and the nations (including ours) that are fighting to change the nature of the treaties.

Please read the above link, then note in the below article that Russia (just weeks after Putin's meeting with President Bush) has just stepped up the pressure on the Arctic Oil Rush...what are we gonna do about it???:

Excerpts from CNN:

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- An expedition aimed at strengthening Russia's claim to much of the oil and gas wealth beneath the Arctic Ocean reached the North Pole on Wednesday, and preparations immediately began for two mini-submarines to drop a capsule containing a Russian flag to the sea floor.

"For the first time in history people will go down to the sea bed under the North Pole," Balyasnikov told The Associated Press. "It's like putting a flag on the moon."

Russian scientists hope to dive in two mini-submarines beneath the pole to a depth of more than 13,200 feet, and drop a metal capsule containing the Russian flag on the sea bed. Video Watch the factors fueling the arctic oil race »

The voyage, led by noted polar explorer and Russian legislator Artur Chilingarov, has some scientific goals, including the study of Arctic plants and animals. But its chief goal appears to be advancing Russia's political and economic influence by strengthening its legal claims to the gas and oil deposits thought to lie beneath the Arctic sea floor.

The symbolic gesture, along with geologic data being gathered by expedition scientists, is intended to prop up Moscow's claims to more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic shelf -- which by some estimates may contain 10 billion tons of oil and gas deposits.

The expedition reflects an intense rivalry between Russia, the United States, Canada and other nations whose shores face the northern polar ocean for the Arctic's icebound riches.

About 100 scientists aboard the Akademik Fyodorov are looking for evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge -- a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range that crosses the polar region -- is a geologic extension of Russia, and therefore can be claimed by it under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Denmark hopes to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge is an extension of the Danish territory of Greenland, not Russia. Canada, meanwhile, plans to spend $7 billion to build and operate up to eight Arctic patrol ships in a bid to help protect its sovereignty.

The U.S. Congress is considering an $8.7 billion budget reauthorization bill for the U.S. Coast Guard that includes $72.96 million to operate and maintain the nation's three existing polar icebreakers. The bill also authorizes the Coast Guard to construct two new vessels.
