The Recall's Broken Promise: How Big Money Still Runs California Politics

by Author Derek Cressman

Fed up with business as usual, Californians recalled Governor Gray Davis in 2003 and replaced him with a celebrity who pledged to clean up government. The Recall’s Broken Promise details how Arnold Schwarzenegger then shattered political fundraising records, attacked campaign finance restrictions, blurred ethical boundaries, and how politicians of both parties have killed needed reforms.

In recent decades, far too many young people have doubted that their actions can make a difference. In this election, student votes and volunteering will matter, whoever they support. Their involvement could have a major impact on America's future, while starting them on a political lifetime of political engagement. We hope you'll help make this possible. ~ Paul Rogat Loeb, consultant to Campus Compact’s 2008 Campus Vote Initiative

ORGANIZING YOUR CAMPUS TO GET STUDENTS TO VOTE AND VOLUNTEER

What if each of America's colleges and universities registered their students as voters, helped them educate themselves on the issues, and encouraged them to volunteer in election-related projects and campaigns?  The impact could be huge, on both America's future and the lives of students who participate. We now have the tools to make this happen, on a nonpartisan basis. But it's going to take your help to get your campus fully involved.

Two excellent higher education projects now offer all the necessary resources to help your school engage students in precisely this way: the prime service learning network Campus Compact's 2008 Campus Vote Initiative, and a complementary website, Your Vote, Your Voice. Their websites describe every possible aspect of what works and how to get your campus involved. But all their great work will go for naught unless individual colleges and universities use the examples, suggestions, and templates they've created. And there's no comprehensive national follow-up effort to ensure that most campuses participate. So here's what we're asking from you:....

Notice of upcoming California Democratic Party Rules Committee and Subcommittee Meetings

written in a message from Garry S. Shay received on Wednesday, August 06, 2008 4:04 PM:

The CDP Rules Committee's subcommittee on Endorsements (Garry Shay, Donna Patterson, Judy Hotchkiss, Charlie Imes, and Charu Khopkar and with Coby King acting as a special advisor and Michael Wagaman of Credentials) had a conference call to work with staff and in planning the timetable and method of handling the various items referred to the subcommittee. During the discussion, we also kept an eye on the Rules Committee's Calendar (and even considered another special meeting of the full Rules Committee - but at this point, that looks unnecessary).

The Subcommittee will physically meet in Sacramento on Sunday, August 17 starting at 11:30 AM. The exact location is to be determined but likely to be at the CDP offices at 1401 21st St, Suite 200. ***

Additionally, the subcommittee is sending a letter out to the recent nominees of the Party to seek their input on a number of Endorsement questions, such as the Platform proposal that was referred to the subcommittee. This letter should go out early next week, with the nominees/elected officials requested to return the questionaire by Sept 15 if possible, with a deadline of Sept 30.

This input will be reviewed by the subcommittee, which will additionally meet at noon on Friday of the next Executive Board meeting - Friday, November 14, 2008. The full Rules Committee meeting should be that next day, as well as the General Sessions of the Executive Board. This two day Executive Board meeting will be at the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort.

To summarize:
Aug 17 @ 11:30 AM - meeting of the Endorsement Subcommittee in Sacramento - other Rules members may attend as observers but attendance is not necessary
Sept 15 - suggested return date of endorsement questionaire sent to nominees
Sept 30 - published due date for endorsement questionaire sent to nominees
Nov 14 @ noon - meeting of the Endorsement Subcommittee at the Sheraton Park Hotel at the Anaheim Resort
Nov 15 - Meetings of the full Rules Committee as well as the CDP Executive Board General Sessions

A reminder that the items referred to the subcommittee include the proposals from Howard Wayne, Mal Burnstein/Christine Pelosi, Dante Atkins, Riverside DCC, as well as other endorsement issues such as club issues that occurred this past endorsement cycle.

*** IF YOU intend to attend this meeting of the subcommittee on Endorsements, please RSVP with Robert Jordan (robert[at]cadem[dot]
org) by Thurs, Aug 14. Include a method of contacting you should the meeting need to be moved from 1401 21st Street, Suite 200, Sacramento, CA www.cadem.org/rules

Yosemite Area People’s Platform

Submitted by people threatened by the flames of the Telegraph Fire Mariposa County, California

July 27, 2008

As the blazes of yet another California wildfire burn around us in Mariposa County, threatening our homes and communities, the perilous state of our world seems close at hand. Just as with the other wildfires that recently engulfed our state, we are forcefully reminded that so many of our National Guard troops, along with their equipment, have been deployed to fight in Iraq, instead of being available here where they are most needed.

It is at times like these, when we are most vulnerable, that we gain clarity about what matters most: the kindness and generosity of families, friends, and neighbors.

Please Support Our State Workers, STOP ARNOLD NOW!

Dear California For Democracy Members,

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to use 20,000 state employees as economic hostages to force Democrats to make draconian cuts in basic state services. Republicans, on the other hand, face no such pressure to increase revenues by taxing yachts and private planes and other ideas.

Schwarzenegger proposes cutting pay below the state minimum wage. With some of the most expensive gas in the nation, rapidly rising food costs, and urban rents near $1,800 for a two-bedroom apartment, these 20,000 hard-working employees would not be able to pay for basic necessities under the governors proposal.

If you feel, as we do, using blackmail should not be a part of the state budget process, two different organizations are collecting petition signatures in protest.

The Courage Campaign will deliver signatures on Monday (July 28th), so please sign theirs right away at: http://www.couragecampaign.org/StopArnold

The California Democratic Party also has a petition. You can sign it any time at: http://www.cadem.org/supportcaliforniaworkers

Berlin, Germany

Thank you to the citizens of Berlin and to the people of Germany. Let me thank Chancellor Merkel and Foreign Minister Steinmeier for welcoming me earlier today. Thank you Mayor Wowereit, the Berlin Senate, the police, and most of all thank you for this welcome.

I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before.  Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen – a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.

*CDP ACTION ALERT!* Fight for Equality - Decline to Sign

Written by: Susan Rowe on Apr 15, 2008 4:39 PM EDT

Linked to groups: DFA-CFD of Fresno & Madera Counties

Below is a CDP Action Alert message from Chairman Art Torres of the California Democratic Party. All California Democrats and Progressives are being asked to please help.

California Democratic Party

* ACTION ALERT! *

The California Democratic Party just passed its 2008 Platform, and one of the planks from that platform deals with Equality of Opportunity:

* Support nondiscrimination and equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people in all aspects of their lives. *We support the LGBT Community in its quest for the right to legal marriage as well as the clergy's complete religious freedom to solemnize marriages in accordance with their beliefs.

The adoption of this platform couldn't have been more timely because the LGBT community is under assault in California and desperately needs your help.

The Equality for All campaign needs 1,000 volunteers in the next week to
stop the ballot initiative that would change the state constitution to
prohibit marriage for same-sex couples for generations.
