Report and photos of Peace Rally held in Oakhurst, CA July 2008 after the jump...
We fiscally responsible, social progressives held our first Peace Rally in the sierra foothills of Eastern Madera County last Friday evening. We normally attend rallies down in the central valley that are hosted by Peace Fresno. [The city of Fresno is about an hour drive south. The price of petrol is sky high these days so we held a rally in our own neighborhood.]
If you take into consideration the territory where we all live... I would say that our rally was received well by most of the travelers who passed us on the mountain roads. I truly believe if our rally had taken place a few years ago we may have all been arrested or would have been given a few citations. We only had a few negative responses and there was one guy in a very BIG truck who stopped to watch our activities. I took his picture before he left us in peace.

We now have 2 or 3 open threads...
Olmert to Resign as Israeli Prime Minister
http://www.truthout.org/article/olmert-resign-israeli-prime-minister
Jerusalem - Scandal-dogged Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has announced that he will quit politics and resign as prime minister this fall rather than join a contest for the leadership of his own party.
The announcement comes with Mr. Olmert trailing badly in the polls and facing a widening corruption investigation that police have said could soon lead to an indictment. In resigning, Mr. Olmert lashed out at the "ceaseless attacks of righteous people" which he said had begun as soon as he took office in 2006.

- Yes indeed... DNC Chair, Gov. Howard Dean M.D. is always first at the bfa.

Strike on Iran Still Possible, US Tells Israel
http://www.truthout.org/article/strike-iran-still-possible-us-tells-israel
Paul Richter and Julian E. Barnes for The Los Angeles Times: "Bush administration officials reassured Israel's defense minister this week that the United States has not abandoned all possibility of a military attack on Iran, despite widespread Israeli concern that Washington has begun softening its position toward Tehran."
Ira Chernus | War Meets Values on Campaign Trail
http://www.truthout.org/article/ira-chernus-war-meets-values-campaign-trail
Ira Chernus for TomDispatch.com: "Pundits and activists who oppose the war in Iraq generally assume that the issue has to work against McCain because they treat American politics as if it were a college classroom full of rational truth-seekers. The reality is much more like a theatrical spectacle. Symbolism and the emotion it evokes -- not facts and logic -- rule the day."
Sam Ferguson | The Fatima Massacre
http://www.truthout.org/article/the-fatima-massacre
Truthout contributor Sam Ferguson writes: "'No me basta,' says Haydee Gastelu. Often. Literally, it translates from Spanish to mean 'it's not enough for me.' But the dicho could also be interpreted as 'it never ends.' For Mrs. Gastelu, both are true. During the last 32 years, Mrs. Gastelu has relentlessly pursued the suspected murderers of her son Horacio, who was 'disappeared' by the repressive intelligence services of Argentina's last military government in 1976. On August 7 of that year, he and his girlfriend, Ada Victoria Porta, were dragged from Porta's house by a small unit of plain-clothed men in the middle of the night. Porta's family reported seeing the couple forced into a Ford Falcon, hogtied and hooded, as they were driven away.
- I had a bunch of whistles the state party had to sent me. They were left over from our CDP Convention goodie bags.
By Susan Rowe on Jul 30, 2008 9:24 PM EDTWe all had a lot of fun blowing them and shouting out to folks to honk for peace. I have a few more pictures of this activity that I will add later in the comment section of the thread.
Both Barack Obama and John McCain are chomping at the bit to use military force, a strategy that, according to a recent Rand center report, is effective only 7% of the time.
The study also asserts "there is no battlefield solution to terrorism," that the phrase "war on terror" only perpetuates what is essentially a criminal act, and what we already know, that there is no such thing as a terror "war." (AP) Indeed, the think tank financed by our tax dollars says good intelligence, and policing, are the most effective ways of dealing with counterterrorism efforts.
Notably, in Berlin, Obama not only echoed JFK's ardent pledge to fight communism, he acknowledged that he will continue the so-called "war on terror," adding that "we must defeat terror." But, how does he propose to do that and, more importantly, what will he do with the terror infrastructure we ourselves created in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Iran with the introduction of mercenaries, a.k.a war contractors?

Bush Threatens to Veto "Equal Pay" for Women This week, the House is expected to bring the Paycheck Fairness Act to the floor for a vote, legislation that would help close the wage gap between working men and women and "close loopholes that have allowed employers to avoid responsibility" for discriminatory pay. In an official statement, the White House said it would veto the bill...

An Army sergeant complained about faulty wiring in Iraq months before another soldier was fatally electrocuted in a shower in the same quarters, according to documents released Wednesday by a congressional committee.
Sgt. Justin Hummer filled out a work order in July 2007 that warned, "Pipes have voltage, get shocked in the shower."
Hummer told investigators from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that at least once, he had to use a wooden stick to turn off the shower "because the electrical current was so strong."
Army records show electricians from contractor KBR found "several safety issues concerning the improper grounding of electrical devices" in Feb 07.
In Jan 08, Staff Sgt. Ryan Maseth was electrocuted in a shower in the same quarters where Hummer lived the previous summer.

and lookie what's happening at Invesco Field in the lead-up to Obama's acceptance speech there - a nonpartisan tribute to Presidential history:
clip... Those 75,000 Democrats who will pack a football stadium for Barack Obama's convention speech won't be there just to whoop and holler on television. They'll form the world's largest phone bank to boost voter registration — fired-up supporters using computer targeting the campaign has spent months putting together.
The move to the Invesco Field at Mile High stadium for the convention's final night next month — at an additional cost of $5 million — will capture a huge crowd the Obama campaign plans to put to work. They'll be armed with data gleaned through "microtargeting" unregistered voters the campaign believes are ripe to back Obama if pressed to get on board.
"If we do this right, we'll be unbeatable," said Steve Hildebrand, the Obama adviser overseeing the effort.

Las Vegas has it going today at a gas station. Though if that gets promoted to the front page maybe the pathway through Indiana can be changed.
If Barack decides on a VP today, I'll try to blog it live. Susan set a nice standard for a report with this post.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Approves Ambassador Nominee to Armenia After Last Minute State Department Clarification
WASHINGTON, DC -- In the midst of mounting Senate scrutiny and the prospect of a “hold” on Marie Yovanovitch’s nomination to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, the State Department, today, cleared the way for her approval by retreating from statements calling into question the historical record of the Ottoman Empire’s destruction of its Armenian population, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA). [...]
The Department of State letter – sent in response to sustained pressure from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden (D-DE), and Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA), and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) – was issued only hours before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was set to vote on her nomination. The Committee confirmed the nomination by voice vote, with Senator Boxer going on record against the nomination, citing the Administration’s reluctance to properly characterize the Armenian Genocide. The full Senate will likely consider her nomination prior to their August recess. [...]

By Susan Rowe on Jul 31, 2008 10:06 AM EDT
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA): “As we work to build our standing in the world, I think there are a few issues on which we should never waiver. I believe we as a country have to be clear on the Armenian Genocide and I believe we have a continuing problem on our hands, particularly as we address the modern day genocide plaguing the Darfur region.” […]
“As you know, Mr. Chairman, there is no need for further study or historical research. The facts are clear. Beginning in 1915, more than 1.5 million Armenians were marched to their deaths in the desert, murdered in concentration camps, and forced to endure unimaginable acts of brutality at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Since that time, the deliberate massacre of the Armenians has been painstakingly documented by untold numbers of scholars, including Nobel Prize recipient Eli Wiesel who published a petition in the New York Times with other Holocaust scholars affirming “the incontestable fact of the Armenian Genocide” [...]
