In 2008, Bill Hedrick came within 2 percent of unseating a 16 year Republican incumbent (Ken Calvert) in the 44th CD in California.  That near upset caught the attention of both political parties.  The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has now targeted this seat as being in play for 2010.  However, the Republican party has also targeted the seat as one of ten they want to retain in 2010 and they have already begun fundraising for Mr. Calvert.

With both parties actively involved in the race, Bill will need to raise a million dollars.  The DCCC will help us raise some of that money but only after the first $200,000 - $250,000 is raised right here in the district.  Though it may sound unfair, that stipulation is put on every candidate the DCCC works with to ensure there is legitimate grassroots support for the candidate within his or her district.

The campaign has been told that the June 30 filing deadline is a critical financial benchmark and, as such, we are asking all of our supporters to please step up now and give what you can.  We realize the election is still 16 months away and $200,000 sounds like an impossible goal to reach, but the truth is: if everyone gives $20 or $30 and asks all of their friends and family to also give that amount, we can make it.

Let's show that the 44th Congressional District in California, with the support of DFA members nationwide, can make this benchmark and thus will show its unyielding  determination:

To elect BILL HEDRICK in 2010!

Mitzy is a two year old Brittany Spaniel/Chocolate Lab mix.  She is a wonderful dog who loves to play, especially fetch, and loves to go for rides in the car.  She knows how to sit, shake and heel.

Mitzy's family loved her very much.  They had her spayed, as all responsible pet-owners should, and took her to the Vet for the least little problem.  Mitzy was a member of the family, and when a member of your family is sick, you take them to the doctor.

However, about six months ago, the father of Mitzy's family lost his job.  The result was so financially devastating that they could no longer afford to care for Mitzy and were forced to surrender her to the Missaukee Humane Society.

Given the exponential descent of our economy, Mitzy's story has become all too common.  But, there is something you can do to help.  Missaukee Humane Society (MHS) is a small shelter in rural northern Michigan, dependent on contributions to continue their mission of mercy.  They are one of the only no-kill animal shelters left in Michigan, and are currently running on a deficit, at full capacity.  Many mornings, the staff arrives to find abandoned pets, left overnight by owners who can no longer afford to feed or care for them.

Right now, MHS is attempting to win a $10,000 prize from Adopt-a-Pet.com.  Please, can you spare 30 seconds of your time to vote for MHS, by clicking on...

$10,000 could save literally hundreds of abandoned pets - Pets that give us nothing but unconditional love in exchange for an occasional pat on the head, a squeaky toy to play with, and a couple of bowls filled with food and fresh water.

Because MHS is in a rural, sparsely populated area, they need as many votes as possible from all across the state, and all across the country.  Please vote now at...

Time is running out, so please don't wait.  The contest ends January 31, 2009, at 11:59pm.  After you vote, you will have an opportunity to forward information about the contest to as many people as possible so that they can join you in this worthy cause.  Vote, spread the word, be a voice for the voiceless...

I thank you, and Mitzy thanks you.

The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world—the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous—is his dog…a man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that had no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Best wishes,

Strange is our situation here upon earth.  Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose.  From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know:  That we are here for the sake of others...for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy.  Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.

Don't Let Calvert Steal This Election!

Following is an update from Bill Hedrick on the vote count in his congressional race for CA-44:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Ken Calvert is facing his most serious challenge of his 16-year Congressional career --- the race for the 44th Congressional District remains too close to call.

Earlier this week, Mr. Calvert declared victory and he did so before in excess of 200,000 uncounted vote-by-mail and provisional ballots had been tallied.  GOP lawyers are descending upon registrars' offices in Orange and Riverside trying to influence the vote counting.

As was reported earlier this week in the Huffington Post,

Calvert's team has apparently been having private conversations with the registrar's office in Riverside County, which was the last county in California to report its election results. There were numerous reports from Democratic Party officials, voters and even a poll worker in Riverside County that voters were ‘forced to use provisional ballots’ or ‘denied ballots entirely’ on Tuesday.

Countywide, we understand there are still more 58,000 absentee and  48,000 provisional ballots remaining to be processed, as well as thousands of poll votes rejected by scanning machines that have yet to be counted.  Our number one priority is to support a fair and accurate accounting to ensure every vote is counted and every voice is heard in this election.

I want to thank the leadership and staff of the Registrar of Voters in Riverside and Orange Counties who have been working around the clock since Tuesday, processing the uncounted ballots, and for their transparency in accurately reporting the results.

We need to allow the process to be completed.   The margin is certain to go up and down over the next three weeks.  The election in the 44th Congressional District is not over yet and won’t be until all the votes have been counted.

We have assembled a legal team to make sure the process is fair and that all valid ballots get counted. We have the best lawyer money can buy, but good lawyers are expensive.

Do not let Calvert steal this election.  We don't need another Florida 2000 popping up here in Riverside County. We are making waves and even the national press has taken notice that the race for the 44th isn't over yet

I need your help today to fight back.

Please consider making a contribution to the Hedrick Ballot Fund right now to help pay our legal costs and make sure thousands of votes are counted.

As an individual you can contribute up to $2,300 toward our effort.  Your previous contribution to the Hedrick for Congress Campaign does not count toward the limit.  Even if you contributed the maximum amount to my 2008 campaign, you can still make a contribution to the Hedrick Ballot Fund.

Bill Hedrick

Update on CA-44: This Race Isn't Over Yet

Following is the latest update from Bill Hedrick, DFA-List candidate in California's 44th Congressional District. As you will see below the jump, the 2008 election is not over for us here, and we need your help to stand up to the GOP's dirty tricksters and win this congressional race.  If you are a Vote by Mail voter in the CA-44, please verify the status of your ballot now:

If you have questions or concerns about the status of your ballot, please let the Registrar of Voter's Office know.  ROV contact info:

Bill needs volunteers to take shifts observing the ballot counting at both the Riverside County and Orange County Registrar of Voters Offices.  If you can volunteer a few hours of your time, please call the Hedrick for Congress Campaign now to sign up for a shift:
Riverside Office:          9496 Magnolia Avenue, Suite 101          Phone:  951.689.1060
San Juan Capistrano:    31876 Del Obispo, Suite 2                        Phone:  949.234.0020

Finally, please, please, please empty out your piggy banks, go through your couch cushions, raid your toll booth money, dig deep, deep, deep into your wallets and give what ever you can, give as much as you can to Bill's ballot fund.  Ken Calvert has Dick Cheney to raise money for him.  Bill Hedrick has you.  Please be as generous as you can.  Read the update from Bill below the jump:
