I returned from Netroots Nation with 7 hours of video! So i have my work cut out for me editing all this material.

The DFA Netroots Scholarship winners got together for a caucus on the first day. I video taped the event and you can see it below. The first 2 clips are a short introduction from each of the participants about themselves. The last clip is 30 minutes of the caucus. In this clip, Arshad Hasan, DFA Executive Director and others, give an overview of the Scholarship  program.

- DFA, the Deans, the sponsors and the voters

By Cheryl on Jul 24, 2008 10:13 PM EDT

of the NN scholarship program are all first. A special thanks to the great HEP and DFA folks who funded my travel and other expenses as well as Lianda, Pat, Debbi, Steve C. and Steve B. for taking care of me.

are also first.

And by sponsors I meant $$ contributors, if that wasn't obvious, lol.

- Edwin, does Google have a limit on the length of the video they accept?

By Cheryl on Jul 24, 2008 10:32 PM EDT

You tube seems to load fine on my old junker, but I have trouble with Google and other sites. Comedy Central will not load on any of my computers with whatever application they use. Since they have banned their videos and SC and JS from being on YouTube, I never get to see them since I don't have cable either.

- Bummed I couldn't go

By Sandra Verthein on Jul 25, 2008 8:43 AM EDT

to Netroots Nation, but I am going to try to go next year when it is in Pittsburg.  But a big thanks to DFA for organizing the scholarship competition so that others whose barrier was $$$ (and not vacation time like me) could go.  Kudos DFA!

- I forgot all about that one.

After reviewing the video (thanks Edwin!) I got to see all the intros I missed because I came in late. That was nice. I still have to laugh that Arshad rated us on our "awesomeness", lol. I couldn't even put up my best work without revealing too much of my id.

On the racial diversity, next year I suggest having a question so people can answer directly what their background is. One can't assume by looking at someone what their race is and hey, I have color. It might be pretty pale but is is there. :P You might be surprised that people are more racially diverse than they appear on the surface. Deep in Mexico you have a lot of very white people because they have Spaniard lineage whereas closer to the US border the skin is browner because they are more Native American mixed lineage. But I know Native American's with blond hair and blue eyes and one of my Mexican American friends looks just like me...same skin and hair color. Also, if people didn't submit photos and you never met them, you would have no idea so just some feedback for next year.

Yes, I will help for next year too as Arshad requested. I really enjoyed it this year. I will also help with food like I said, lol. Already been checking out good food places in Pitts and will get recommendations from locals.

I have a question for DFA. Where was the "Thank You Howard" videotaping occurring? That was mentioned at the caucus but I don't recall seeing anything set up at the booth and I was there a few times to sign the card and such. Didn't see any camera filming going on but would have participated in that, as much as I avoid cameras.

Did that video happen and can you post it if it did?

I was going to work the booth Sunday but then they closed the exhibits Saturday. I didn't think the exhibit hall was up long enough (enough hours...starting at 10 am is too late). I need to give that feedback to organizers. I had to decide between the booths and sessions and many booths were not manned.

Regarding the 'thank you' cards we wrote, did all donors get one written to them? My suggestion for next year would be instead of having 3 lists with the same names which created confusion since we only checked off our names on one list (creating the possibility for duplication) would be to have many sheets of about 5 names or so and assign them to scholarship winners and track who has what list. That way you are more assured to get everyone and can easily track who was done and who was not. I only did 5 and could have done more. I think Kenny did about 10!

Nice picture of the Netroots Nation scholarship winners, lots of Dean smiles. What was expected to be a two hour hearing in the Judiciary Comm. became a six hour hearing. It was not billed as an Impeachment hearing, but that quickly became the subject. Some good people speaking and some treacherous ones like Lungren of Ca. It will be rebroadcast on C-span tonight starting at 8Pm. Please excuse the unimportant, out of line, off topic and "we shouldn't be paying attention to such things". Even so, I'll probably continue to not pay attention to orders.

thanks for the vids!  It was great to 'meet' the scholarship winners.

In case Susan isn't on, her questions are at the bottom of Kenneth's thread on NN.  Cheryl has replied, perhaps you can add some insight also.

- Here are the questions. Thank you Thankful and Edwin. Cheryl gave an answer. Thank you Cheryl

- Does anybody know the average age of the folks who attended NN08?
By Susan Rowe on Jul 25, 2008 3:45 PM

How many attended were 35 and under?

How many attended were 55 and under?

How many attended were 60 and over?

What were the ages of most of the panelists, speakers, sponsor tables, etc.

What were the ages of those who won scholarships?

---------------------------

- More Qs about NN08
By Susan Rowe on Jul 25, 2008 4:10 PM

Did NN08 offer any carbon offset packages for folks' travel?

How many attending were students?

How many attending were parents of school and college age children?

How many attending have a mortage or own a home?

How many attending were unemployed?

What were some of the professions of those who attended?

How many attending were presently employeed in politics and how many were not?

How many attending were women?

How many attending were men?

Did they pay cash (check), use a credit card or did their employer pay for them to attend?

How many attending were married or divorced?

How many were professional writers or journalists that belong to a union?

How many were active members of their local, state &/or national political party?

---

And yes, I like the numbers. I just can't help myself sometimes. I was a banker for over 11 years.

- Good questions for the organizers
By Cheryl on Jul 25, 2008 9:26 PM

Not sure if they really have most of that data though. We certainly aren't qualified to answer it. The scholarship winners were probably the most diverse in age, background, what the blogged about, etc. A good Latino presence at the conference. Female speakers were lacking as a % though...just like last year.
