Three DFA Academy Graduates Elected as National Delegates
Submitted by Kate Donaghue

In January 2007, as we were regrouping from the successes of the 2006 midterms, DFA scheduled their first class in Manchester, New Hampshire.

A little more than a year later, three of the Massachusetts activists who attended the class were elected delegates to the Democratic National Convention.

Oscar Arce, from Greenfield in Western Mass, was elected as a pledged delegate for Hillary Clinton.  Oscar and I had been in touch occasionally by e-mail.  He was elected as an at-large member of our Democratic State Committee earlier this spring.  He was also elected as a delegate from his Congressional District.

Hannah Banks is a Boston based activist.  She had traveled to many states in support of Barak Obama's campaign.  She was unsuccessful in her race at the District level, but on Saturday she was elected as an At-Large delegate.  Hannah and I had not been in touch, but I talked with her a few times as she campaigned for delegate.  She told me that previously she had not been active in primaries and that she had very much enjoyed her work across the country.
Like Oscar, I was elected delegate at the District level.  I was honored to be included in my Congressman's slate.  I was deeply moved by the number of people ready to travel distances to vote for me at the district caucus.  I was humbled by the words of appreciation I heard for my work for so many candidates.

Oscar and I were both pleased that as Democratic State Committee members we were able to vote for our classmate, although we support different presidential candidates.  After Hannah was elected at the nine hour meeting, we posed for a quick photo.  A number of others wandered by and commented on our "unity" picture.

I'm guessing that it might be some sort of record for a DFA class.  Three national delegates from one site may be the most.  If not, I would guess that three delegates, from one state and not the state where the class wad held, is a convoluted record of some sort.

Any interesting stories from DFA graduates?

A lot of people in CA who just won the right to get married will probably beg to differ.

As for me, I've been married for 17.5 years and wouldn't trade a minute of it for all the loot Bush and his pirates have plundered in 8 years.

- Well I don't think it makes any difference.

By Fred from Oregon on May 15, 2008 8:38 PM EDT

My wife and i have a civil union.  There was no marriage, per se, no church.  We can call it marriage but that has nothing to do with the legal aspects.

A rose is a rose by any other name, and gays that think calling it marriage makes any difference are kidding themselves.   It's the legal rights that  count and those rights are not necessarily transferrable across State lines just because you call it a marriage.

It's  not the same as desegregation.

- How desperate ARE they?

By Sitka on May 15, 2008 6:26 PM EDT

Turned on the TV for the first time in a while to learn that Bush has called Obama an appeaser of nazis  -- while OVERSEAS in the Israeli Knesset.

Much is made of it by the Rabid Right if Americans criticize their nation while overseas, yet here we have a so called president attacking his possible, if not presumptive, successor; and not just overseas, but in front of a foreign national assembly. It is a new low from political cretins who I thought must surely have already scraped the bottom bare.

And the network I saw this on, CNN, chose to run fringe denunciations of Obama in support of Bushit and his footman McInsane.

Unfortunately Sitka, there are a lot of idiots out there who will believe what Bush, McInsane, Larry Craig, and sundry other fascists have to say.

- Rabid Right? Cute

By Fred from Oregon on May 15, 2008 8:18 PM EDT

It has a nice ring to it, but if you apply it to the Revisionist Zionist devotees, you must also use it for the Christians.  Sounds too much like Rabbi.  But they're probably going to call you a Nazi anyway, if you use the term.

The Iron Wall revisionism was a 1920-30s dogma put forth by Jabotinsky, that there could be no negotiation or relationship with the indigenious Palestines except from a position of superior military status, assuming they would never give anything the Zionists would want.

The reason we say "Revisionist Zionism" is because modern Zionism not only follows the 1920s revised ideology of Zionism, but also goes far beyond it (to the right.)

Present day Revisionist Zionists still do not want to negotiate with the Palestinians, even from a position of infinitely superior military force.

I understand how gay couples would want to have rights like wills and ability to make decisions in the hospital, etc. Also maybe to have kids. Lots of reasons really.

The CA supreme court said it all--it's a fundamental right--this should be the beginning of the end for those who would deny them that right, unfortunately including Howard Dean and John Edwards.

I doubt either would discount the will of the Court.

I wonder whether or not the current conservative/fascist (Federal) Supreme Court might find the Ca ruling an impingement on Federal law?

- Have no objection to the ruling

By Fred from Oregon on May 15, 2008 9:00 PM EDT

I just don't think it really matters legally - calling gay unions "marriage" is a social issue, not a legal one, unless a majority of the electorate want to officially define it that way.  There is no violation of rights calling an African American a "negro" or calling a white person a "caucasian"  It is not what you call a gay union, that ensures common law rights for them, it is the legal status of that union.

That absolutely was a response to Paine's comment that both Dean and Edwards would uphold the ruling of the court.

it will be interesting to see what happens at the federal level ~ there are many states that have passed anti-civil union/same-sex marriage ~ and the first bill introduced in the Senate this session was to make it illegal for federal courts to hear cases on this and other issues.

Fred ~ I believe it's a matter of semantics. The terms civil union and marriage mean different things to different people and are defined in laws differently depending on the state. Whatever it ends up getting called, the same term should be used for all people as far as I'm concerned.

- McCain gets it wrong again

By Huron John on May 15, 2008 7:56 PM EDT

http://www.opednews.com/maxwrite/link.php?id=59490

McCain’s praise of Ronald Reagan is wholly misplaced. To recap, during the Iran-Contra affair in the 1980s, hostages were not released because of Iran’s fear of Reagan, as McCain suggested. In reality, Iran released them after Reagan administration officials infamously sold arms to the country, which were transfered to Ayatollah Khomeini. As a result, 11 Reagan officials were convicted of crimes.

The Obama people should be hammering on this!
