WILLIAM GREIDER: During the last generation, 25, 30 years ago, the Federal Reserve, the central bank that regulates money and credit, tipped hard in one direction.

BILL MOYERS: Toward?

WILLIAM GREIDER: Crudely put, toward capital, in favor of capital and against labor. It not only hardened the value of money by suppressing inflation, but it participated very aggressively in the role of stripping away regulatory breaks on financial system and banks. Declined to enforce many of its own regulatory powers that exist in law. And meanwhile, sort of kept a foot on the brake about economic growth and full employment and all those good things that might help working people by encouraging rising wages.

The ‘Send Karl Rove to Jail’ Campaign

http://www.truthdig.com/avbooth/item/20080718_send_karl_rove_to_jail/

Sorry if this is a ‘repeat’ for you…please consider signing the petition and

Forwarding to your lists…

From Robert Greenwald…..

This sounds like a dream, doesn't it? Well, it's not. We have a unique opportunity right now to send Karl Rove to jail, but only if we take immediate action.

All we have to do is pressure the 40 members of the House Judiciary Committee, make them hold Rove in contempt and send him to jail. We've never had such a direct opportunity to hold Rove accountable. No, this is not enough punishment for his years and years of crimes, but it's a huge start, and will send a very clear message to the entire Bush administration.

We put together this video to explain the issues surrounding Rove's failure to testify before Congress, and why Rove should be held in contempt and sent to jail. Check out Send Karl Rove to Jail, and sign our petition to ensure that the HJC holds Rove in contempt.

Watch the video and sign the petition.

- David Sirota on "Centrists"

By Huron John on Jul 19, 2008 10:34 AM EDT

The Obamaniacs will be on me like Old Navy on white trash for this.

In the asylum that is American politics, beware a candidate like Barack Obama when he is lauded for moving to "the center" -- because usually that means he is drifting away from it.

Over the last month, the Democratic presidential nominee has backed a measure to permit warrantless wiretapping and protect telecom companies when they violate customers' privacy; sent conflicting signals about whether he will reform the NAFTA trade model; and threatened to revise his timetable for ending the war in Iraq. Universally, reporters have billed this dance as a move to the middle.

Most politicians and journalists who set the parameters of our political debate live in Washington and make six-figure salaries. They are geographically, financially and socially isolated from the blood-and-guts consequences of today's two wars -- the one in Iraq and the one on the middle class. That insulation skews viewpoints.

When regular folks talk to friends and neighbors, we sure feel like our desire for privacy, disgust with NAFTA and opposition to the Iraq war are mainstream majority positions -- and they are. But then comes the barrage.

Day after day, smiling anchormen, blow-dried correspondents and silver-tongued congressmen follow the Big Lie theory of indoctrination, taking to our televisions, radios and newspapers insisting that crazy is normal, the majority is the minority and -- most importantly -- the fringe is the "center." This is no accident.

More Aldous Huxley than George Orwell, these are the methods of modern propaganda, with the celebration of Obama's "centrism" the latest doublespeak. In this brave new world, language is sculpted to skew the "center," intimidating the majority from demanding concrete change for fear of looking like lunatics. It is a slickly packaged process of marginalization and demoralization -- one with an underlying goal: keeping the real lunatics running the asylum.

- Solution...

By Subway Serenade on Jul 19, 2008 11:04 AM EDT

Give the country a veto proof majority in both houses. I think it's clear that America is more engaged in the process than at any time before. Obama can only have the power we give him. I remember back when Carter was President, the Left was going crazy over the Trilateral Commision.  New world order,  same old sh!t.

I've been following Obama's campaign as much as anyone here. In my opinion, FISA was the only thing I had a problem with. I'm sorry if folks are upset about Faith Based Initiatives, but many churches have been participating Head Start for years. Churches also run Summer Camps that I think get Federal money.

Obama has Dean on the bus. I'm really impressed with that. The ACLU has taken FISA to Federal Court. Congress has taken a lot of heat on FISA, among other things, and I'm sure da critters know they defied the popular will, and that they will hounded from now on, or run out.

And as I've said, until we see actual video footage of a 757 hitting the Pentagon, Afghanispakistan is "It" in a global game of "Tag." Getting out of the main quagmire is a good start at this point.

You have to go with the candidate you have, not the candidate you might want or wish to have at some later date...or something.

- McCain's not funny

By Huron John on Jul 19, 2008 10:53 AM EDT

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca/senator-mccain-isnt-funny_b_113434.html

Undignified displays of grinning nonsense coinciding with times in which he ought to be acting like a president will hopefully be recorded as significant part of his [Bush's] legacy.

And now it's clear that the president's would-be Republican successor, Senator McJackie the McJokeman, will prove to be even less serious and dignified in the role of Smirker-in-Chief. If that were even possible.

Last week, in response to a serious question about Iran, the Republican presumptive nominee joked about killing Iranians with weaponized cancer. This week, it's news about a joke involving gorillas and rape.

"Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, 'Where is that marvelous ape?'"

Get it? Women like to be beaten and raped. Hoo-hoo! In days past, it's been jokes about wife-beating, bombing Iran, Chelsea Clinton's looks, and Alzheimer's Disease. Based on these precedents, I can only imagine Senator McCain's forthcoming zingers about still-births, burn victims and Thalidomide
