Single payer rallies in PA - Thurs, June 19

Written by: Kevin Shaw on Jun 12, 2008 9:58 PM EDT

Linked to groups: PA for Democracy, PA Single Payer Healthcare Action Committee, Montco DFA

Push for the passage of Single-Payer healthcare legislation here in Pennsylvania (HB 1660/ SB 300) next Thursday June 19th,  on the Capitol steps (3rd and State Streets) in Harrisburg from 12 noon to 1PM.  On that day protests will be held around the country – the same day that 38,000 health insurance lobbyists will be having their annual convention in San Francisco.

Can't make it to Harrisburg? Join an event closer to home...

June 19: Day Of Protest Against Insurance Companies - HIGHMARK, Pittsburgh
It's a hot summer for healthcare reform in PA and all over this land.  Now is the time to stop the institutional madness that is killing, injuring, and bankrupting hard working Pennsylvanians as they struggle to pay their healthcare bills.  Citizens just like you, along with doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals are making their voices heard here and in more than a dozen cities nationwide.  11:30 - 1:00 pm, 120 Fifth Ave, at Liberty, Downtown.   Download one of our cool flyers and pass it around!   More information: Ed Grystar, PASNAP/NNOC, 412-215-4141, egrystar@pennanurses.org

June 19: Day Of Protest Against Insurance Companies - CIGNA, Philadelphia
Pennsylvania is leading the nation in rallies for sane healthcare, with five events of more than a dozen happening all over the country.  Take a couple of hours and let the insurance industry know how much you would rather have single payer health care than their dollar-driven system.  Noon at Two Liberty Place at 16th and Chestnut.  Download a flyer and give it to someone you care about.  More info: Kathleen Casey, PASNAP/NNOC; 610-567-2907 or kcasey@pennanurses.org

June 19: Rally in Wilkes Barre - "Healthcare, Yes; Health Insurance, No"
Join some kindred spirits in Wilkes-Barre for a rally for single payer healthcare.  Starts at noon in Public  Square, downtown W-B.  We'll start off with a few words on health care sanity from physicians, nurses, and activists.  Then join us as we walk up the block to Northeast Blue Cross, where we'll give voice to our theme.  Pick up a nifty flyer here and spread it around.

June 19: Rally In Allentown for Single Payer Healthcare
Allentown reminds us that the movement for sane healthcare reform extends to every part of Pennsylvania.  Come join us as we let our community and the health insurance industry know where we stand on today's healthcare mess.  Meet some of your neighbors, share some stories, and get fired up over improving the lives of our fellow citizens.  Starts at noon in front of the Highmark Blue Cross office, 1221 W. Hamilton St, Allentown, PA 18102.  Contact Ruth for more details, or download a cool flyer to put up all over town.

Maybe we can pretend it is on topic until we get the water cooler. It is important because one of the biggest nuisances in the FL Fiasco actually endorsed Obama.

HOWEVER...he refuses to drop his lawsuit against Dean and the DNC. Two lawsuits still pending.

Florida Senator Steve Geller endorses Obama. But continues his lawsuit.

I was talking to a guy yesterday afternoon who is convinced all our healthcare woes are caused by liberals, lawsuits and the 'fact' that hospitals have to charge so much because the spend so much on the loatest diagnostic equipment, because if they don't have it and don't run the tests they'll get sued.  Yep, hard to follow.  I'll try to get a word in edgewise w/ him again in a couple weeks...

result of trying to run health care like a business and for profit.  Which means there's an incentive to increase revenues, regardless of whether the services are needed, rather than aim to reduce them.  Just as a fire department is most successful when there is no destruction of property or lives in its service area, health care should aim to keep people well and un-injured, instead of un-insured.

The problem is the payment system.  Ask him if he'd like to go back to paying for his gas with cash.

- Victory on Habeas

By Thankful2Thankful4Dean on Jun 13, 2008 1:31 AM EDT

Bet this was posted earlier, but I just saw it...

Dear Lauretta,

Today the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a stinging rebuke to the Bush-Cheney Administration's handling of military detainees at Guantanamo Bay -- while vindicating you, me, and thousands of others who have spoken out against the Administration's unwise and unconstitutional policies from the very beginning.

In today's 5-4 Boumediene v. Bush decision, the Court ruled that stripping habeas corpus rights from detainees at Guantanamo Bay was unconstitutional. In so doing, the Court reaffirmed the fundamental right of habeas corpus -- the right that all Americans, and those prisoners under American control, have to challenge the government's reasons for imprisoning them -- a fundamental American right that underpins our individual freedoms and liberty.

Now, in three separate decisions, the Supreme Court has rejected the Bush-Cheney Administration's erosion of fundamental rights.  It is these very protections and rights that set America apart from our enemies and make our nation a beacon of freedom and justice for the rest of the world.

It's time to repair the damage that the Bush-Cheney Administration has done in rolling back essential rights that have long guided America's conscience -- and the Supreme Court's ruling is yet one more step in that important process.  It's another signal that -- at least in this instance -- we will not cringe in fear and walk away from bedrock American values.

Today's decision is a huge victory for justice, for the Constitution, and for the rule of law.  Thank you so much for continuing to stand with me and fight for the rights and freedoms we hold dear.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator

Photo_124_tinythumb

- The court did more than that and the Conservatives are right to be upset.

By Monica Smith on Jun 13, 2008 5:21 AM EDT

What the Court said, in effect, is that the Constitution follows the flag and agents of the
United States government are subject to the limits imposed on the by the Constitution, wherever on the globe they happen to be.  This, of course, is the argument that was used to support not taking part in the international court and exempting American troops from Iraqi law, with understanding that the limits on the exercise of power imposed by the Constitution are stricter than other legal systems.  But, as usual, Bush tried to have it both ways--claiming our laws were stricter and then not bothering to enforce them because the victims were aliens.

If they'd been content to let well enough alone and just get straight with the law after the Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld decision, this stinging reversal would have been avoided.  Because what's happened now is that the Court has made clear that the Constitution is a limiting framework that applies to the agents of government, a consequence of which is that the individual rights of anyone they interact with are protected, but protecting individual rights, whether of aliens or American citizens is not the objective.  The objective is to subject the agents of government to the rule of law--again, regardless of the characteristics of the person or persons with whom they interact.  Kennedy has finally made his point.  Their only out lay in not bringing cases and in not making it necessary for cases to be brought.  (There's no way that six years of detention can be defined as an emergency measure that's necessary to abrogate habeaus corpus.)

Which means, in effect, that there's no more going overseas to do what you can't do at home.
The rules on our 750 foreign bases are going to have to be the same as those at home, including the ones that are geared towards environmental protection.  We have no hard and fast information to what extent foreing operations were prompted by the desire to perform functions without having to worry about cleaning up the mess.  There was certainly some of that in the decision to start using the Australian outback for target practice by missiles (ditto for the reefs being bombed around Guam), instead of continuing to shell that Puerto Rican beach (or send missiles across North Florida and slam them into Alabama).

Celtics more than Big Three in Game 4

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports 23 minutes ago

...

For the way that these Celtics pushed though the greatest regular-season turnaround in NBA history, for the way they pushed through an unexpectedly rugged Eastern Conference playoff chase, there had never been such a measure of the distance they had come together – the bond, the belief – as the uncertain moments of Game 4 on Thursday night.

Long before the most staggering comeback in the history of the NBA Finals, a hellacious 97-91 victory to push Boston to a 3-1 series edge, the constitution of the Celtics had been challenged to its core. All those promises, all that talk, and here was the acid test.

The Los Angeles Lakers had turned the Staples Center into a layup line, a Hollywood red carpet of dunks and unchallenged layups and Nicholson cackles. The Celtics were down 24 points and suddenly the Lakers had life and legs and legitimacy in these Finals.

one of which is less than 1/2 mile 'over the line' from Burlington (DFA interns - it says 3 miles but it's just outside the edge of town).  so technically it's the 'first' one in Burl, but here's what we have within 10 miles...    253 members plus the new group of 18.

note that as I post this, the only 'photo' that's not a broken link is the DFA logo in 'Dan's test' group.  how weird is that - this blog fluctuates so much - something that worked 2 days ago is totally messed up today!

- McCain stacking "Town Hall" meetings with supporters

By Huron John on Jun 13, 2008 8:14 AM EDT

Sound familiar? Obama shouldn't touch these with a 10 ft pole

http://www.alternet.org/blogs/peek/?ses=4d5b5681ec74fa7ab0b489823a8e3584#88035

After reporting that the McCain campaign held a townhall with Democrats and Independents, Fox's Shepard Smith admitted that the McCain campaign had done no such thing. "We have now received a clarification from the campaign and I feel I should pass it along to you. The McCain Campaign distributed tickets to supporters, mayor Bloomberg, who of course is a registered republican, and other independent groups."

Wait.. this just in: Oliver Willis, I can hardly hear you over that crowd snoring in the background! There hasn't been a mass drugging, has there? Is this the work of terrorists? Hold on, I'm getting a picture on my iPhone... and... why... everyone there is awake! And... I can barely make it out... it's a little grainy... they're entirely white!

Right now John McCain is doing a “town hall” meeting being broadcast by Fox News (The Official Network of McCain ‘08, Home Of The Terrorist Fist Bump) and it’s a mighty amazing trick the McCain camp is pulling. Somehow they’ve gone to the most diverse city in America (New York City) and are seemingly unable to find minorities willing to attend.

That's some story! Did you manage to grab some shots of the event? What a scoop! Good work, Oliver! Stay safe.

Amazingly there are people at work who believe every word from FUX news.  I keep telling them it is all hogwash, told them to get on the internet and get informed (secretly I don't think they know how).  Anyway got into a couple of heated disagreements, I was told to leave politics at home.

It drives me up the wall that people are so misinformed.

By Monica Smith on Jun 13, 2008 9:01 AM EDT

it's civics or government.  Then tell them that if they don't want to participate, fine.  But, they have no reason to complain.

Since they are obviously reluctant to make an independent choice, just tell them to vote for Obama.  "Tell, don't ask."

Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial.
89%
No, like any president, he has made a few missteps, but nothing approaching "high crimes and misdemeanors."
4.2%
No, the man has done absolutely nothing wrong. Impeachment would just be a political lynching.

Denise - thx for news on Bonny Doon - if fire is 60 mi from you I'll bet you are getting smoke at your home - hard to breathe?  Just emailed a friend who lives in La Honda to see how she is faring.

Monica - you had a cryptic note on the last thread - about people who get things for free from the gov't are for voluntary servitude?  Did I read it wrong?  Sounded like my Republican cousins.  Actually, I never expect anything from the gov't - have said before - during a hurricane was surprised to see a FEMA booth (pre-Katrina) giving out bottled water for free.  Also, you have a good post upthread here about the SCOTUS decision from yesterday.  Not sure I got it -- are you saying that the decision had a bad effect in that they are now saying everywhere is the US?  I need to go read it again.

I've heard the relocation of the DNC referred to on the threads.  Maybe I missed it but here's a link to an article on Politico from this morning.  During my corporate slave years we had many reorg's and many times people were just left in place ala Howard with a salary but no budget and no duties - it was a way to render people impotent w/o actually firing them.

I think it's great that some groups are doing single payer rallies and DFA groups are supporting.
