Strange is our situation here upon earth.  Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose.  From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know:  That we are here for the sake of others...for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy.  Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.

CHALLENGE: ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT to raise $380! Help the only Democratic County Commissioner in Missaukee County (Michigan).

On Tuesday, November 4th, history was made in Missaukee County. I was fortunate enough to defeat a Republican incumbent for County Commissioner in the second most Republican county in the state of Michigan. However, as with many campaigns, I have debt to pay off, and several final expenses to pay. I need to raise $380 in 3 days. Can I count on you? Making a contribution is easier than ever. OFFICIALLY ENDORSED BY MID-MICHIGAN DEMOCRACY FOR AMERICA (MMDfA)!

“Richard REALLY knows his stuff and has specific plans for improving his county.”

As I was quoted in our local daily, the Cadillac News, following my victory...

"The voters...have made a determination that the status quo is no longer acceptable, that we expect more accountability, greater openness, and transparency in county government."

Please, help me pay off my debt by raising $380 in 3 days. Just click on the link below, and make a secure, online contribution using PayPal...

No Retroactive Immunity, No Erosion of Liberties, No Warrantless Wiretaps

I am writing to you to remind you of your responsibility to protect the constitution of the United States. Americans sent a clear message in 2006 by empowering democrats with a majority in congress, because they wanted a change from the policies and the continual erosion of civil liberties by one George W. Bush and his administration.

Sadly, little if anything has been done on this front, and this congress has more often acted as enablers of a man who has outright contempt for the rule of law and detests transparency in leadership.

I will not forget that you and your party did not deem it worthy to pursue the 35 articles of impeachment that were brought to the floor against a president who has spied illegally on our citizens, detains hundreds abroad (and at home) without charge indefinitely, and most recently has been proven (as if there was ever any doubt) to have institutionalized torture.

You and your democratic "leadership" have however, found time once again to bring to the floor a bill that strips away even more of the people's civil liberties (the people by whose consent you govern) and grants immunity to those who aided and abetted illegal and warrant-less spying on the American people.

John McCain: The Opacity Of NOPE!

In this historic election year, the people have a choice of unprecedented clarity. The presidential candidates for 2008 offer a uniquely stark contrast of policy and vision. One has embraced a theme of hope that is inspiring millions and setting a new course for national renewal and unity. He has ignited a grassroots revolution of citizen activists committed to bringing change to an arrogant, unaccountable, dishonest, and incompetent government.

The other is John McCain.

In contrast to Barack Obama's campaign of optimism and hope, McCain offers a vision that is squarely focused on obstacles. Its opaque negativity fairly precludes it from even being described as a vision at all. It might be more accurately expressed as The Opacity NOPE!

Peace? Nope. Health care? Nope. Fair trade? Nope. Tax equity? Nope. Choice? Nope. Environment? Nope. Get the idea?

Hello fellow Enoughers,

I'm hoping to start some communication here so that ENOUGH groups can keep in touch, stay active, and continue to rally all over the country.

I am one of the hosts for the San Diego/Poway group.  We have been very pleased with the ENOUGH project, and we're pleased with our own success.  There are now about 8 groups in San Diego County, and a couple of those were offshoots of our group.  We have been going strong since the very first rally.

It would be great to hear how others are doing, and to share ideas for success.  I feel very strongly that the ENOUGH project is extremely worthwhile, rewarding and can make a difference.

Answering 'Why Now?' on Gonzales Resignation

Written by: Randal Helm on Aug 27, 2007 10:33 PM EDT

Linked to groups: The Young Turks ~ ENOUGH!

This is a cross-posting, original at Shadow-media.org

For those asking "Why now?" regarding the resignation of Alberto Gonzales today, let me lay out what I think is happening:

On July 11th, Michael Chertoff, or as he is more commonly known, "Skeletor", suddenly raised the anxiety of Americans by talking about his "gut-feeling" that there might be a terrorist attack. This touched off a flurry of discussions about whether or not we were safer, if an attack was impending, etc. This allowed the administration and the NSA director, Mike McConnell, the opportunity to ratchet up the rhetoric about our "safety".

A little less than a month later, in a tragic week for American democracy and civil-liberties, both The Senate and The House allowed themselves to be checkmated over the issue of warrantless wiretaps. They were so clueless, most of them seemed stunned, shocked even, that they had somehow inadvertently given the President (and more inexplicably the embattled Attorney General), more power than asked for, taking the FISA court out of the equation. Take this excerpt from an editorial in the Washington Post (all emphasis mine):

Administration officials, backed up by their Republican enablers in Congress, argued that they were being dangerously hamstrung in their ability to collect foreign-to-foreign communications by suspected terrorists that happen to transit through the United States. The problem is that while no serious person objects to intercepting foreign-to-foreign communications, what the administration sought -- and what it managed to obtain -- allows much more than foreign-to-foreign contacts.

The government will now be free to intercept any communications believed to be from outside the United States (including from Americans overseas) that involve "foreign intelligence" -- not just terrorism. It will be able to monitor phone calls and e-mails of U.S. citizens or residents without warrants -- unless the subject is the "primary target" of the surveillance. Instead of having the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court ensure that surveillance is being done properly, with monitoring of Americans minimized, that job would be up to the attorney general and the director of national intelligence. The court's role is reduced to that of rubber stamp.

Now that this has passed, and this new power has been given to the Attorney General, all they have to do is substitute another willing and able Bush crony, a la Michael Chertoff, or long-time Bush friend Clay Johnson, or...?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's done as a recess appointment. This seems to be what some of all of this was about (leaving Rove and Gonzales in place though they were taking huge amounts of damage for doing so).

Keep a close watch on who they put in place. I don't think it's a coincidence that as soon as they got their warrantless wiretaps legalized by the spineless Democrats, Rove and Gonzales quietly skulked out of town.

Why, you ask? Simple: Mission Accomplished.

Dear Friends,

Go to www.impeachmentwithhonor.com and check out the new Anti Bush/Cheney Iraq War Protest Song "Impeachment With Honor" by Joe Grease & the Dump Dubya Band of San Diego, CA.   "Impeachment With Honor" draws its musical inspiration from Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jessie Colin Young, and The Beatles.  The vibe of the song lyrically underscores the arrogance of the Bush Administration.

"Impeachment With Honor" is more than a rant and rave...It bites hard at the incompetence of the Bush Iraq War Plan, national security, immigration reform, the abandonment of the middle class, as well as the erosion of our Constitutional rights!  "Impeachment With Honor" represents the perspective of the average, working/middle class American family's frustration with the aloofness of Bush/Cheney Amerika. "Impeachment with Honor" will soon be available for digital downloading from over a dozen companies, including Itunes.  Downloading is being linked to the website www.impeachmentwithhonor.com  A clip of the radio version of the song can also be heard on the website.  There is a juicier "Underground" version that will also soon be available for downloading. As Peter B. Collins says, "Impeachment is on the table"

You Are Being Spied On In Ways You Haven't Even Considered...

Written by: Randal Helm on Aug 10, 2007 11:03 AM EDT

Linked to groups: The Young Turks ~ ENOUGH!

Confirmation that you are being spied on a variety of ways you hadn't yet considered. I've almost lost my capacity for outrage. Not because I'm not offended to my core, but because the Congress isn't.

It's the Congress, not the President, that is supposed to represent the people in our Democratic Republic. They don't.

Prediction: A handful of Democratic leadership will come out swinging. They will promise action. They will say they've heard the voice of the people. Then they will be challenged by the President, who will say "boo!".

The Congress (especially Democrats) will tuck their tails between their legs and scurry off to hide, then pass a bill that not only legalizes the actions they spoke out against, but grants even more powers and removes any existing oversight.

We the people will not do a god-damned thing about it, but if we gave a damn about the freedoms we used to have, we would be taking to the streets.

From Salon.com: America under surveillance

The NGA's role in Hurricane Katrina has received little attention outside of a few military and space industry publications. But the agency's close working relationship with the NSA -- whose powers to spy domestically were just expanded with new legislation from Congress -- raises the distinct possibility that the U.S. government could be doing far more than secretly listening in on phone calls as it targets and tracks individuals inside the United States. With the additional capabilities of the NGA and the use of other cutting-edge technologies, the government could also conceivably be following the movements of those individuals minute by minute, watching a person depart from a mosque in, say, Lodi, Calif., or drive a car from Chicago to Detroit. [...]

Prior to Katrina, the NGA had been used sporadically during domestic crises. Its first baptism of fire came after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, when the agency collected imagery to help in the recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But the storm of 2005 triggered NGA activity on a scale never before seen inside the borders of the United States. "Hurricane Katrina changed everything with what we do with disasters," John Goolgasian, the director of the NGA's Office of Americas, told Salon. In New York after 9/11, the NGA had only a handful of people on the ground, but "with Katrina, we put a lot of people down in the theater," he said, using a term usually reserved for overseas military battlegrounds. The agency now deploys its staff on a regular basis to hurricane zones and also provides assistance to law enforcement agencies during events such as the Super Bowl, the baseball All-Star Game and political conventions.

On one level, the engagement of the NGA and the U-2 flights over the Gulf Coast during Katrina were commendable efforts to use America's vast surveillance powers for the safety and support of its citizens. But at the same time, the incident apparently marked the first time in history that U.S. intelligence agencies created to spy on foreign countries were deployed to collect extensive information on the U.S. "homeland." Their role during Katrina is just one aspect of an enormous domestic surveillance infrastructure put in place by the Bush administration ever since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks sparked a radical restructuring and expansion of America's intelligence system. Although the full scope of domestic surveillance under Bush remains elusive, we now know from press accounts, lawsuits, and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and other top Bush officials' descriptions and denials that the NSA has been involved in multiple domestic surveillance programs -- in apparent violation of federal law -- including spying on Americans' telecommunications and Internet traffic, as well as data mining.

Regarding: "Enough" (The Young Turks)

First time I've done anything like this so I wanted to be prepared just in case I'm the only one standing out there. I've created this simple handout that helps summarize a few of the major points describing what I've had ENOUGH of.

It's generic enough to be used at any location and includes the link to the DFA Enough main page. I hope you might find it helpful.
