as a Registered Nursing Assistant in a nursing home, and as a home healthcare aid. Minimum wage at the nursing home, slightly more as in-home. The nursing home offered healthcare that was about half my salary, in-home made sure we stayed part time and healthcare was NOT offered.
I lived for nearly fifteen years with NO healthcare except the "indigent" help at my local clinic. Eight of those years were under a Democratic President (Clinton).
Never saw or heard from any union organizers. Ever. Mother Jones would be embarrassed, to say the least.

TASK FORCE CREATED ON EMPLOYEE MISCLASSIFICATION
Governor Chet Culver has signed Executive Order 8, which establishes the Independent Contractor Reform Task Force. Composed of representatives from state government, the executive order will review and make recommendations on state regulations as they pertain to employee misclassification. In signing the executive order, Governor Culver said he believes a fair and just workplace is the right of every worker. Employers who contribute to the local economy should not have to compete with those employers who choose to break the law by knowingly misclassifying their employees.
