Democracy for America group blog for Democracy for America - Orange County
From John MacMurray - candidate 72nd Assembly District
Linked to groups: Democracy for America - Orange County

“Keep the
change--use it to do some good.” “Thank God the Democrats are here!”
“How do I register as a Democrat?” were just a few of the comments and
questions booth volunteers handled at the Labor Day Orange International Street Fair.
Noting the non-stop crowds of visitors to our booth, John said our Democratic Party booth must have played host to half of Southern California.
He noted that for
most of the time he, Ida, and their Communications Director Chris
Sanchez worked the booth, people were lined up three or four deep at
the counter, waiting enthusiastically and politely to make a donation
for anything with Barack Obama’s name or picture on it, or for their turn to register to vote.

John said our booth
went through two large cases of Obama T-shirts, hundreds of Obama pins
and stickers, all the rally signs, and all but two of the yard signs.
And, about 300 new voters were registered or re-registered.

A note of thanks here to Mr. Brian Cross, who worked the Libertarian Party
booth next door to ours. Brian politely corrected John on his misuse of
“selling” the Obama material, pointing out that since we were not
collecting or paying sales tax, we were “accepting donations.”

Brian was his party’s candidate for the
72nd AD in 2006. He and John exchanged views on
issues as time permitted, and found some areas to agree on.

John noted that there were fewer hecklers than in previous years; more were colorful than hurtful.
Many of the booth
visitors were families from the immediate area, who told John that this
was their Labor Day outing. With the price of gas and the uncertain
economy they didn’t feel that taking a long weekend away was a good
idea.

John mentioned that
he was surprised and pleased about the large number of people signing
up as volunteers for his campaign and others. As one put it, “This is
way too important an election for me to stand around.”
