July 4th--What's Your Idea of Patriotism?

232 years ago, the founding fathers of our nation penned the Declaration of Independence, and 11 years later, the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  They clearly laid out what the definition of patriotsim is, and I believe Progressive values stand firm to these tenets.

To me, patriotsism is standing up for what we believe is best for our nation.  It is getting involved in our government however and at whatever level we can.  It is letting our representatives know how we feel about issues so they can best represent us in our government.  It is encouraging those that stand up for our rights and represent what is in our best interest.  It is telling those that are not representing our best interest how we feel, and what they can do to better represent us.  It is having open dialogue and a free exchange of ideas. It is respecting each others opinions no matter how much we may disagree, and having the right to try to change opinions.  It is believing in the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and standing against any attempt to dismantle or pervert them.  It is being a good citizen that cares about our communities and respect each others pursuits of happiness.  In wartime, it is supporting our troops, but speaking up to our leaders if we feel it is an unjust war.  It is respecting and acknowledging the brave men and women in the military that swear to protect our nation and what it stands for...the Constitution, and the rule of law that has emanated from it.

Many people seem to think patriotism is about flags, fireworks, parades, or blind faith in government.  It is not.  This is the definition of nationalism, not patriotism--rabid nationalism is the same ideology that led to fascism in Nazi Germany.  I'm not suggesting we are at this extreme here, but I get tired of people saying they are patriotic because they wave a flag.  Don't get me wrong--I love our flag, fireworks, and parades, but blind faith in government or our leaders is the furthest thing from patriotism an American can get. Oh--wearing a flagpin: nothing to do with patriotism.  It is what we stand for and do to make our nation better, not what we wear or display in order to get someone to think something about us.

Some people on the other side of the aisle like to say, 'if you don't like our country, then leave.'  This kind of statement is the very essence of being 'unpatriotic'. Our Constitution clearly states that it is not only our right, but our duty to change government if we are not happy with it.  Those that make the above statement have absolutely no idea what our nation stands for, or even why they enjoy the right to make that statement.  I was in a conversation with a Republican friend of mine the other day, who made this statement in the middle of a conversation about how we can bring about Universal Health Care.  My knee-jerk response to him was, 'if you don't want to change your government for the better, then you should leave, because blind faith is not patriotism and is not what our nation stands for.'

Okay...so you found out what prompted me to write this article:-)  What does patriotism mean to you?

- Patriotism?

By Phil Specht on Jul 4, 2008 9:10 PM EDT

Let's make sure that we back up Sen. Feingold and the others in the Senate who will stand up for our constitution. Contribute $25 today to fuel our fight to stop telecom immunity
Phil -

You are the last line of defense for the Constitution. With the FISA vote looming, the Bush administration and their allies in the Senate are pushing harder than ever to grant immunity to telecom companies who spied illegally on innocent Americans.

Like Sen. Russ Feingold told DFA members yesterday:
"We should celebrate our Constitution this Fourth of July -- and do everything we can to prevent it from being torn up when the Senate returns to Washington DC next week."
DFA members nationwide have been on the front lines of the fight to stop telecom immunity for months. In the last two weeks alone, we have made over 13,211 reported phone calls to Capitol Hill. Over 10,206 in office visits reported -- that's thousands of members who will deliver our message in person directly to their Senators in their home offices. And over 30,000 people signed our Senate Petition in the last 24 hours.

Let's make sure that we back up Sen. Feingold and the others in the Senate who will stand up for our constitution. Contribute $25 today to fuel our fight to stop telecom immunity.

CONTRIBUTE TODAY!

You can be sure that AT&T and Verizon are ready to fight this battle and whatever comes next with their corporate contributions. DFA is the people-powered answer to this D.C. lobbyist influence.

The American people deserve better than legislation that will cover up for Bush's dirty deals and protect the ones who helped him spy on innocent American citizens. Together, we can make sure we protect the constitution and hold the Bush administration accountable.

On this 4th of July, make sure we have the resources to keep the pressure on and stop telecom immunity. Turn up the heat today!

CHIP IN YOUR $25 RIGHT NOW!

Thank you for turning your contribution into action,

-Charles

- What action?

By Sandra Verthein on Jul 5, 2008 10:37 AM EDT

What action are you refering to? All I see is an email from Charles posted in full as a blog post, there is no indication that the recipient heeded the call to action.  Did he make a phone call?  Write a letter?  Give money?  Or do you feel if someone posts -- without comment or any additional narrative -- an email they received to be a "patriotic action"?

Actually, I was referring to the action suggested in the e-mail he posted as the patriotic action--of course we don't know if he actually took action--but standing up against FISA is patriotic.

- Patriotism to me...

By Alan Zitz on Jul 4, 2008 9:23 PM EDT

I think yuo said it well, David.  Patriotism is about what we do as citizens to participate in our democracy, and not the silly symbols many people use to claim patriotism.

I am tired of my neighbors waving a flag on the 4th of July, and not willing to discuss anything with a thought other than what they heard from Faux news.

It is disgusting that we seem to have state run media pushing symbols ahead of real patriotism.  The flag pin thing is utter Bushshit.  Supporting the war no matter what is too.

My neighbors think it is unpatriotic to stand against anything our President stands for, and if he stands against Congress, than it would be unpatriotic to stand with anyone in Congress that stands against the President.  I just don't get it.

- Obama is Patriotic

By Tom Asbill on Jul 4, 2008 10:18 PM EDT

Did anyone see Obama's speech on patriotism the other day?  It was great.  he said alot of these similar things and gotlampooned for it in the media.

His life is his reason for being patriotic.  Coming from a broken home, a mixed marriage, humbel roots, and getting involved in his community to the point of being the Presidential nominee--I can't think of a better example of a patriotic person than one that took every advantage not given to himto become a great leader.

Obama is is the definition of patriotic!

- Fireworks are great!

By Will Davies on Jul 4, 2008 10:23 PM EDT

I have to say that I do feel somewhat patriotic when I watched fireworks tonight. I was thinking about how long fireworks have been around, even before weaponry, and that they are still here. We are a peaceful country, and fireworks on te 4th represent all of the 'bombs bursting in air' that we have had over the years in just and unjust wars. It reminds me of teh Revolutionary War and what our founders fought for.

Just because I feel patriotic watching and reminiscing--doesn't make it a patriotic action--we should stop this FISA thing NOW!!!

VOTER REG IS PATRIOTIC STOP CENSORING ME HQ

By Denise - SMCDFA on Jul 4, 2008 11:19 PM

After finding that my car was towed from a parking lot, along with hundreds of others, I finally made it home. I can afford the fine, and am going to call a few folks to see what can be done about it (good to know the town's council people) but I feel awful about others who were towed that don't have the $345 to get their car out of hock. An employee of Safeway (I was not in that lot) had her car towed. She was at the pound in tears in her Safeway uniform. That made me sad. I had some choice words for EOP, Equity Office Property, and will be calling the SVP of the NoCal regional office on Monday. I love a project.

Anyway, we raised over $600 for the San Mateo County Democrats today in just 8 hours - lots of buttons and bumper stickers, some T shirts, lots of yard and window signs. We had to take orders for stuff that ran out. I met alot of great people, had some wonderful discussions. When I could tell when someone wanted to argue, I did what Howard suggested we do - ask them what is important to them. Take it out of the Dems vs GOP and make it a personal conversation. It works! That's how we got the GOP fence sitters to re-register as a Democrat.

Oh and the GOP booth shut down an hour early. No traffic I guess ;)

- Really?

By Sandra Verthein on Jul 5, 2008 10:51 AM EDT

Really?  You think "patriotism" is trashing the staff members of Democracy for America because they want to have a new format for the DFA blog?  That is pretty narrow definition of patritiosm!  *I* think patriotism is doing things like standing up against FISA, and it is because of the hard work of those DFA staffers that you are trashing that something like this possible:

In the last two weeks alone, we have made over 13,211 reported phone calls to Capitol Hill. Over 10,206 in office visits reported -- that's thousands of members who will deliver our message in person directly to their Senators in their home offices. And over 30,000 people signed our Senate Petition in the last 24 hours.

Might there not be one or two other people out there more worthy of your wrath and derision than the DFA staffers who help all of us together do something as amazing as this?

- great post

By Edwin Rutsch on Jul 5, 2008 6:37 PM EDT

Thanks for the post David. It's important for us to work through these different values like patriotism and articulate the progressive definition and vision of the word. And to contrast it clearly with the conservative definition.

You hit some good points with your definition.

For me, in a simplistic quick definition, Patriotism for conservative is a receptacle for them to project  all their Failed Conservative Values into:, Authoritarianism, hierarchy, control, obedience,  extreme individualism, secrecy, self-righteousness, hypocrisy, greed, dogmatism, etc. etc.

For progressives its projecting caring, empathy, community, equality, justice, responsibility,   etc. into it.

So when conservatives say we need to be patriotic, they mean we should be supporting their set of failed conservative values.  When progressices say they value patriotism, they mean they support these deep seated american values of caring, empathy, community, justice, equality, responsibility,  etc.
