Boots on the ground in Seattle WA

What Worked:

On Election Day, I took the day off of work, and worked an inner city precinct in Seattle. I followed my Dem script, hanging doorknob hangers in the morning, and then hit the phones starting around 1 in the afternoon.  In my message on the 90% answering machines I reached, I reminded all the absentee voters, and people who hadn't shown up to the polls yet to vote, and gave them directions to their polling place.  around 6pm I hit them again. In Washington, absentee ballots can be dropped at any polling place, saving postage and gaurenteeing it gets in on time.

The polling place I was at served only the one precinct I was watching, and it had heavy turn-out, both from the regular sign-ins, and from the absentee drop, and I like to think that I was personally responsible for getting many of these people out.

Election day volunteering kicks butt!

In the weeks leading up to the election, I also attended a couple MoveOn.org cell phone parties, identifying voters for turn-out.  I think the MoveOn effort was hugely successful.
