DFSC Endorses in Washington's 39th LD

Written by: Chad Shue on May 10, 2008 3:22 PM EDT

Linked to groups: Democracy for Snohomish County (PAC), Democracy for Washington

In April, DFSC was pleased to endorse the campaigns of:

Scott Olson

Scott Olson

and

Fred Walser

Fred Walser

Scott is running to unseat Dan Kristiansen as the 39th LD State Representative (Pos. 1) and Fred is challenging current 39th LD State Senator, Val Stevens. This is Olson's 2nd run and the first for Walser. Both men are running on platforms that highlight needed highway safety fixes for both US 2 and SR 522. Considering the failures of the incumbents to produce any effective results in that area (and the many traffic fatalities related to those failures), we believe it is imperative for the citizens of the 39th LD to make a change; and that Scott and Fred would provide real solutions to the issues impacting that district.

Fred brings a lifetime of public service in the area of law enforcement and traffic safety to bear in his race. After serving 28 years with the Washington State Patrol, Fred served as Police Chief for the City of Sultan for the past 11 years. He has also served as Chair of the US 2 Safety Coalition. Fred is also concerned about education reform and told us that he would bring together all interested parties to come up with working solutions for the this urgent issue.

Scott comes to his race as a concerned citizen who has lived and worked in the district for many years. He has owned a small business in the area and keeps in touch with the locals as a bartender in Monroe. His previous electoral experience includes a term on the Sultan City Council. Scott is particularly concerned about education and healthcare.

DFSC is proud to lend our support to these fine candidates and encourage folks both in and out of the 39th LD to lend their support in every way possible.

Chad Shue
Chair, Democracy for Snohomish County

Your drive and enthusiasm should help to enliven the convention. I'm just hoping there aren't any real boners (I remember all too well Kerry's junior high level acceptance speech).

I have a call into Jim.

your constant help inspired me. This a.m. after a good nights sleep I was so tired from thinking about this.

And the way theydid this was NOT democratic. They wanted all of the delegates to be Elected officials.

But my speech I emphasized what I did . I said I was ACTIVE. WHERE ARE YOU??

Anyway, I am like so excited.

You all are my inspiration. I mean It.

- The Lexicon Legacy of George Bush

By Huron John on May 10, 2008 6:23 PM EDT

http://www.counterpunch.org/fantina05102008.html

As the U.S. lurches towards the end of President George Bush’s reign of terror, it can look back at a number of Mr. Bush’s ‘accomplishments:’ transforming a record-breaking budget surplus into a record-breaking deficit; starting two wars for no good reason, and generally making fascism fashionable again.

The evaluation and discussion of any of those ‘accomplishments’ is worthy of a volume of books. However, one area that might not be so closely studied is Mr. Bush’s alteration of the English language. A few examples will suffice to show either his brilliance, or the gullibility and stupidity of the U.S. voter. Which it is will be obvious on November 4 (Election Day).

In November of 2000, Mr. Bush proclaimed that he had ‘won’ the presidential election of the most prominent so-called democracy in the world. One tires of pointing out to Mr. Bush that winning an election means garnering more votes than your opponent. Mr. Bush did not win the 2000 presidential election; former Vice President Al Gore did. That Mr. Bush was appointed president by the Supreme Court means he became president, not that he won the election. But by saying it often enough, people do tend to believe it.

Four years later, for reasons that call into question the judgment of the U.S. voter, Mr. Bush did indeed win the election, garnering more votes than his opponent, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry. Voting irregularities in such states as Ohio will not be detailed here. Mr. Bush promptly proclaimed that he had ‘political capital’ to spend, meaning, apparently, that he would run roughshod over all opponents for as long as he wanted to. How this was any different from his first four years in office is not entirely clear, but was somewhat frightening.

Between his two redefinitions concerning elections, Mr. Bush introduced to the world the idea of ‘pre-emptive’ strikes. This apparently means that the president decides he wants to invade a sovereign nation in order to steal their natural resources, and announces to the world that he will do so before they have a chance to attack the U.S. The fact that they have no capability of doing so is unimportant when a ‘pre-emptive’ strike is planned. See, if the U.S. waited until Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, perhaps similar to those the U.S. sold it a generation ago, then the pre-emptive strike would not be quite so pre-emptive.

Early in Mr. Bush’s second war, he announced ‘Mission Accomplished’ in Iraq. For generations that statement had meant an end to whatever undertaking had begun. The war to which Mr. Bush referred at that time has dragged on for five years since that bemusing pronouncement. There is still no end in sight. So ‘Mission Accomplished’ now apparently means that the president has completed a dramatic photo opportunity, wasting the taxpayers’ money by landing in a jet when a helicopter would have sufficed, on an aircraft carrier to speak nonsense.

- Fantina's punchline--Same link as above

By Huron John on May 10, 2008 6:25 PM EDT

In this election year, the Republican candidate should have no chance, but polls indicate that that is not the case; Republican candidate John McCain leads the apparent Democratic nominee Barack Obama in early surveys. Mr. McCain has tied himself closely to Mr. Bush’s policies, and in many regards is given a free ride by the media. If the U.S. wants more war, more torturing of political prisoners, more elitism, more divisiness, it should elect Mr. McCain. If it wants some glimmer of hope that perhaps these ills will somehow be eased, however minimally, rather than embraced, it should elect Mr. Obama.

Six months from Election Day, no one can predict with any accuracy what the outcome will be. But the result of a McCain presidency can be predicted; indeed, the candidate himself proclaims the horrors he will continue. It can only be hoped that the U.S. voter is listening.

- THE BUSH-BATTERED DOLLAR

By Huron John on May 10, 2008 6:37 PM EDT

http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_michael__080509_the__bush___battered.htm

The world only bought our treasury bonds because the dollar was stable and strong. With Bush's conversion of our greatest surplus into our greatest deficit, those days are gone. In Bush's first year, the dollar was 1.19 Euros, now it is only 0.63 €, a 47% drop in the trillions of dollars of the American Dream that our foreign creditors and investors hold: long term bonds, stocks, real estate. All they have to do to provoke a worldwide economic crisis is just start buying Eurobonds rather than ours (forget selling ours). That's started, with the Chinese threatening to dump ours in response to our pressure to revalue their Yuan, the South Korea talking of diversifying their holdings, Iran switching their trade in oil from dollars to Euros (and Putin threatening to), and the Japanese warning of "enormous capital flight" from the dollar. Once the image of American financial invincibility is breached, flight from our bonds could become a flood.

To keep countries buying (funding our habit), bond interest rates will have to be jacked way up- causing interest rates to rise across the board (instead they've been cut, depressing the dollar more), and causing an avalanche of bankruptcies by firms and people bloated by cheap credit. If you think the mortgage crisis is bad, you ain't seen nothing yet. Out of survival, the world is shifting away from dollars, and the ultimate result could be a global economic collapse, because America is overextended way past the cliff, the net is disappearing, and a sinking America will drag down the world.

7 months ago I urged my friends and acquaintances to sell all their holdings and buy gold (then $740/oz) because a category 6 financial hurricane was coming. Well, it's here.

There's one linda who really has made a difference on so many levels -- as a progressive, as a state activist, as someone who successfully works with party outsiders and outsiders, and who even has gone toe to toe with Ed Schultz (and now Ed speaks highly of Howard).

Congratulations linda b and we'll be looking to see you televized in the convention in Dever !

Food waste on 'staggering' scale

Food waste contributes to landfill, creating methane gas

People are needlessly throwing away 3.6m tonnes of food each year in England and Wales, research suggests.

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) found that salad, fruit and bread were most commonly wasted and 60% of all dumped food was untouched.

The study analysed the waste disposed of by 2,138 households.

Environment Minister Joan Ruddock said the findings were "staggering" at a time of global food shortages and WRAP added it was an environmental issue.

'Value of food'

The study found that £9bn of avoidable food waste was disposed of in England and Wales each year.

It is mostly food that could have been consumed if it had been better stored or managed, or had not been left uneaten on a plate.

Much of that food waste goes into landfill rather than into council food disposal and composting programmes, it said. There are climate change costs to all of us of growing, processing, packaging, transporting, and refrigerating food that only ends up in the bin

Joan Ruddock, Environment Minister

Based on the data for England and Wales, WRAP estimated that householders across the UK throw away £10.2bn of avoidable food waste every year.

Using the same extrapolation, they also estimated the average UK household needlessly throws away 18% of all food purchased. Families with children throw away 27%.

By Phil Specht on May 10, 2008 6:54 PM EDT

Politico.com this week posted a very good piece about the work the unions are doing in Washington to influence the content and vote next month in the Senate on the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act. The proposal, which is the first global warming measure approved by any Congressional committee, narrowly passed (11-8) the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in December. It would set the United States on a very new industrial, economic, and environmental path to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions up to 66 percent by 2050, according to an analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council. In a full-page advertisement yesterday in the New York Times, the NRDC described “how America gets richer by reducing global warming.”

Indeed, Chris Frates reports on Politico.com that unions successfully inserted into the bill a requirement that government money on clean energy projects be spent domestically. The AFL-CIO is seeking to expand that “made in America” provision to make sure that 85 percent of labor and production supported by government investment on responding to climate change occurs in the United States.
“It’s pretty obvious you’re going to build a windmill here. It’s not obvious that you make the turbines here,” Bob Baugh, co-chairman of the union’s energy task force, told Frates. “Let’s make sure we do it right from production to construction. Let’s make sure that those investments are anchored in our economy.”

I have to admit that I have long been puzzled by linda's insistance that she

needs a training, because I can't imagine what she'd be trained in that

Not that Lindab hasn't managed to train *herself*  ~~ but I bet it would be nice for her to have trained people to work with. . . .

Although, given the way DFA keeps failing her, I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up doing one herself.

Still. . . .  I thought, hoped, and have prayed that DFA was about *helping* rather than just "accepting" the help of those who have already done it on their own. . . .  It certainly is what they *brag* about. . . .

- Senator Boxer on Banning Bisphenol A

By Susan Rowe on May 10, 2008 8:26 PM EDT

Dear Friend:

My work in U.S. Senate has often focused on keeping children safe and healthy.  I am pleased to let you know that I have joined in an effort to ban a potentially hazardous chemical, known as Bisphenol-A, from all children’s products and certain other consumer products, such as water bottles. Our legislation would also mandate a public health campaign to inform pregnant women on the risks of using certain consumer products even before a ban goes into effect.

Recent studies revealed that Bisphenol-A could pose major health risks, including risks to normal human development and reproduction, and that these exposures can occur during fetal development.  While some have called for more research, I believe that there is sufficient evidence to ban products containing Bisphenol-A, especially those intended for use by infants and children, and those that are used for food products.

Bisphenol-A is used to make certain types of clear plastics that are shatter-resistant.  It is most commonly found in water bottles, food containers, and baby bottles. Because of wide public exposure to these products, the Centers for Disease Control reports that more than 90 percent of Americans who were in a recent study had Bisphenol-A levels at or above levels that have caused abnormalities in animal studies.

As Chairman of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, I’m working every day for the health and future of our nation’s children.  This legislation is a step in the right direction.
