As our economic crisis continues to worsen, some of the most vulnerable among us can not speak for themselves - Unwanted and abandoned pets.  Missaukee Humane Society (MHS) is a small shelter in rural Northern Michigan, dependent on contributions to continue their mission of mercy.  MHS is one of the only no-kill animal shelters left in Michigan.  They are currently running on a deficit, and at full capacity.  Many mornings, the staff arrives to find abandoned pets, left overnight by owners who can no longer afford to feed or care for them.

Right now, MHS is attempting to win a $10,000 prize from Adopt-a-Pet.com.  Please, can you spare 30 seconds of your time to vote for MHS, by clicking on...

$10,000 could save literally hundreds of abandoned pets - Pets that give us nothing but unconditional love in exchange for an occasional pat on the head, game of fetch, and a couple of bowls filled with food and fresh water.

Because MHS is in a rural, sparsely populated area, they need as many votes as possible from all across the state, and all across the country.  Please vote now at...

The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world—the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous—is his dog…a man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that had no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

Strange is our situation here upon earth.  Each of us comes for a short visit, not knowing why, yet sometimes seeming to a divine purpose.  From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know:  That we are here for the sake of others...for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy.  Many times a day, I realize how much my outer and inner life is built upon the labors of people, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.

CHALLENGE: ONLY 3 DAYS LEFT to raise $380! Help the only Democratic County Commissioner in Missaukee County (Michigan).

On Tuesday, November 4th, history was made in Missaukee County. I was fortunate enough to defeat a Republican incumbent for County Commissioner in the second most Republican county in the state of Michigan. However, as with many campaigns, I have debt to pay off, and several final expenses to pay. I need to raise $380 in 3 days. Can I count on you? Making a contribution is easier than ever. Just click on the link below, and make a secure, online contribution using PayPal...

OFFICIALLY ENDORSED BY MID-MICHIGAN DEMOCRACY FOR AMERICA (MMDfA)!

“Richard REALLY knows his stuff and has specific plans for improving his county.”

As I was quoted in our local daily, the Cadillac News, following my victory...

"The voters...have made a determination that the status quo is no longer acceptable, that we expect more accountability, greater openness, and transparency in county government."

Please, help me pay off my debt by raising $380 in 3 days. Just click on the link below, and make a secure, online contribution using PayPal...

"Sicko" in Plano, enough to make you Drinko

Screening Liberally, a concept under the Drinking Liberally umbrella, held it's most recent group outing to the opening weekend of "Sicko" in Plano Texas at the Angelika Theater. We used DFA's offer of promoting it on DFA Link and got people not normally in our circle to attend. We had 35 RSVP's and arrived at the theater this past Saturday to a packed house!

As we waited to enter the theater, we watched as people filtered out from the previous showing. Many were in complete silence. Others mentioned to us, that it was one of the best movies Michael Moore had ever made. The anticipation was mounting! As we waited, what was an empty lobby when I arrived at 6pm had become a bussling line of people waiting for the 7:10pm movie. I would estimate that the theater was 2/3 full, which is really good. The management for Angelika once told me that the only movie to ever sell out in their Plano theater was Fahrenheit 9/11 on opening night. So Michael Moore is a breadwinner for this theater set in the heart of a red state.

I have to admit, I find it hard to discuss the problems with healthcare and insurance companies because I feel like a hypocrite when I do. My company is one of the few who cares about its employee's health. They pay for our premiums. We have a PPO plan that pays out at 80%. After $500 out of pocket, it reverts to 100% paid. And to top it off, we get prescription drugs for $2. So I feel guilty for having it so good. I know there are a lot of other people out there who don't get it so easy. And "Sicko" proves the point even more so. I can not fathom allowing people to go untreated in this country, or to deny their claims. This movie made me cry not once but twice, which is pretty hard to do in a public theater. But on the bright side, it gave us insights into the rest of the world and how they live. Nobody complains about their taxes providing them free healthcare in Great Britain, France, or Canada. They live longer than Americans and are healthier. That should tell you something about why our system needs to change, beyond the fact that we are allowing corporations to make money on the illness and death of our citizens.

After the eye opening movie, true to our name, we drank liberally. Cru Wine Bar is a nice place to unwind and promote democracy one pint (or wine glass) at a time.

I encourage everyone to get out and see "Sicko". Screen it Liberally with your local Drinking Liberally. You can find one or start your own, by checking out www.drinkingliberally.org

I am no longer able to host the North Dallas DFA and have been unsuccessful in trying to find someone to take over the reins. So please join the Dallas DFA group at www.dfalink.com/dallas

The Dallas DFA group is also dynamic and active in local, state and national politics. With membership in that group, you'll be kept informed on their interesting Summer Speaker Series going on right now.

I thank you for your kind and generous support over this past year.
You have made my job interesting, exciting, and memorable. I hope to keep your friendship and look forward to seeing you sometime soon.

Big Hugs,

GOP CONGRESSMAN SEES THE LIGHT!!!

Written by: Oleg Kis on Jul 12, 2006 9:12 AM EDT

Linked to groups: North Dallas Democracy For America

A Republican congressman watches an anti-Bush video and as a result suspects that the Bush administration deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, and that explosives were the main factor in bringing down three of the World Trade Center buildings. Unbelievable? Here's a transcript of a Town Hall Meeting from April 2006 held with Representative Curt Weldon (R-PA):

Dave Slesinger: First, I want to praise you for your Able Danger efforts. Since you are the Congressman most sympathetic to firefighters, have you looked at the quotes from NYC firefighters at the World Trade Center on 9/11 about explosives? If you have, will you accept information on [this] for later comment?

Rep. Weldon: I will absolutely accept information, and I'm very close to the NYC firefighters because one of my best friends was killed there...

I talk to the fire department on a regular basis. When the Republican convention was held in New York in 2004, I went up a day early, I went down to the fire department headquarters. I spent the day with them. And when I finished the briefings, and getting their input, as to what happened on 9/11, which I had ongoing, I went up and spent two hours running with Engine 54 (inaudible) in midtown Manhattan. And I wanted to do that because on 9/11 all 15 firefighters on duty from that station were killed. And I wanted the firefighters to give me their views without going through any chiefs or other officers about what happened.

Now, there's a lot of theories out there about what occurred. And uh, I haven't gone into the structural elements of the building. The fact that there are reports on multiple explosions on other floors... I am open to that information. I'm willing to challenge the system. And uh, and don't automatically discount anything that's told to me because I've seen, I've seen too much. I mean, ya know, I hate to say that sometimes I don't trust my Government, but sometimes, I don't trust the Government. The bureaucracy. Ya know the best evidence of that is we had the, uh, Tillman, the football player. Joined the army, he was killed. We now find out that the army burned his clothing. So the family never got to get the real story about how Pat Tillman died. Now if it was an accident, so be it. You don't hide that information because somebody is going to be embarrassed.

That's the whole story with Tony Shaffer. It's the bureaucrats trying to hide information and facts, so they're not embarrassed. So, do I automatically accept what the Government tells me? No. And that's why I get myself in trouble. I challenge the CIA, I challenge the DIA. I'll challenge our Defense Department. That's why you send me there. If you want somebody to go there, and just go along, you would send a robot. That would vote the way the party wanted, and would go along with the current President. I won't do that. So I'm absolutely open to any information anyone has that challenges anything about the 9/11 Commission or the work there.

Dave Slesinger speaks up: Congressman, that was my question, I, wanna give out, anybody who wants this, this is a speech by a physics professor at BYU, Steven Jones.

Rep. Weldon: Yeah.

Dave Slesinger: It's the hottest thing happening on the 9/11 issue. In his speech, he praises Congressman Weldon, he's a conservative Republican [or was], he praises Reagan, he quotes St. Paul. I think I have [DVD copies] enough for everybody. Just ask me.

Rep. Weldon: It'll open your eyes, because his allegations are pretty strong.

The video that opened Rep. Weldon's eyes can be seen here:

Endorse David Van Os on DFA's A-List

In order for my candidacy for Attorney General to be placed on DFA's A-List, it is necessary to have support demonstrated from DFA groups all over Texas. So far, DFA groups of Lampasas, Denton, and Bastrop, plus a number of individuals, have recommended through DFA-Link that DFA endorse my candidacy with A-List placement.

If you have already emailed in to DFA to recommend my endorsement, I am sorry to have to ask you to do it again if you did not previously do it through DFA-Link. It is the method that DFA prefers. If you have personally recommended my endorsement, I thank you; and if you have not done so, I respectfully ask that you consider doing so.

I respectfully ask, further, that you consider asking your group to do so as a group statement. That is the strongest kind of statement in the eyes of DFA national. If your group as a policy does not make "endorsements," I would respectfully ask that you ask members of your group to consider sending in personal recommendations to my candidate page at DFA. I've been advised specifically by national DFA that they would like to see more recommendations from DFA groups or members in different parts of Texas in order to add me to the A-List.

We The People are in a tough uphill fight against ruthless adversaries who are determined to continue stealing government from us and using it as a commodity for sale to the highest bidders. Such foes are not going to go down easily. They will use every kind of vicious lie, trick, and scheme they can think of to discourage people from realizing the power of their votes. They will continue to have millions of dollars at their command to continue their purchase and rip-off of democracy and civil liberty. But they do not have truth on their side.

In my campaign I am telling the truth to the people of Texas. The truth is that today Texans live under government of, by, and for big corporations and right-wing power grabbers instead of government of, by, and for the people. I am determined that we will take our state back for the people. Thank you for helping me to keep fighting.

Sincerely,

David Van Os

Campaign to Defense Fund

I may stand corrected on a congressman, like Tom Delay, being able to merge his campaign funds into his defense fund. It only applies if the congressman is being tried for things they did legitimately while in office as part of their duties. Money laundering and racketeering are not legitimate functions of a congressman, but that would follow the court's decision on the case: guilty or not guilty.

Onward to State! Glen Maxey for TDP Chair!

Here's hoping everyone in this group is a delegate to the Texas Democratic Party Convention following the SD/County Conventions this past weekend.

We need to show the full force of the largest progressive Democratic organization in this state, Democracy for Texas. Glen Maxey, the founder of DFT, is running for TDP Chair. The choice is between doing business as usual, or building something inspiring and innovative with Glen Maxey.

We can do this but only with the support of every one of us. If you've been a very bad boy or girl and haven't worked to become a delegate to the state convention, you can make it up by learning more at www.maxeyforchair.com and asking your delegate friends to vote for Glen Maxey.
