Michigan is still a close race - too close for comfort!!!
Obama leading McCain 43% to 41%; this is according to an EPIC polls done August 21 (so this is getting old - and it does not include the "Palin Effect")
Selzer poll: Obama leading 46% to 39% August 17-20
Zogby Poll: Obama leading 46% to 37% August 15-19
I went to the Obama rally in Battle Creek on Sunday - it was well attended; a big enthusiatic crowd but the speeches were somewhat disappointing; it was a very hot day and they were running behind schedule - we had to wait about 2 hours in that stadium before the main speakers got on stage.

Regarding opening environmentally protected areas for mining and pumping oil:
There is over 200 years of oil in the 48 contiguous States that are capped up by oil companies to monopolize world energy. There is no need to violate our environmentally protected areas, just to allow oil companies to further monopolize their strangle hold over our lives.
They are creating a media frenzy just to increase the price of oil; very successfully I might add. However, there is no immediate threat for an oil shortage !!! The oil companies have ONLY created the perception that there is a shortage !!!!
I personally believe that ALL mineral rights belong to the American People, NOT souless corporations!!!
I applaud Venezuela for nationalizing the oil assets in their country!!!!
We should be doing the same thing here in the United States !!!!

Thank Al Gore for his Leadership
http://ga6.org/campaign/gore_thankyou
There may be no single person who has done more for our environment than Al Gore. That's why I'm so pleased that Vice President Gore has accepted my invitation to testify before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on March 21st! And I want you to help me give him the warmest welcome possible.
Please sign my online thank you card to Al Gore now -- so I can personally deliver it to him when he comes to testify later this month!

Key Event On Campus This Thursday!
Linked to groups: Kalamazoo for Democracy
Dear Democracy Campaigners,What follows is the text of a notice I've posted to our companion DFA group, Students for Democracy, on the WMU campus. The Students for Democracy organizer from last year, Tim Jarrell, has been in touch with people who want to re-energize the College Democrats. What they've been working on has great potential to have an immediate effect on the November election right here in our local area. This has just come together in the past 10 days or so, so I know it's short notice. But it's truly worthy of your involvement.
Please give some consideration to coming out to this meeting to help us get organized. It would be a very cool way to focus our efforts this fall so that there will be some longer term payoff.
Hope to see you there!
Paul

The Key Event This Week!
COLLEGE DEMS ANNOUNCE FIRST MEETING!
8 PM Thursday September 28, 2006
The President's Dining Room
Bernhard Center.
Look for posted signs or ask at the candy counter for directions.
This first meeting is for organizing; it's been called for this particular day (after consultation and consensus) because this Thursday, September 26, is the first practical day for folks to get together in time to take meaningful action for ...
The 2006 Election ...
coming soon, to a polling station near you. Though our student organization was less active last year, there is plenty going on this year, and many possibilities for you to take action. Right now. In time for the November election. Please come to the meeting this Thursday to find out more. If you cannot make it this Thursday, please write me directly and let me know that you're interested and we'll find a way to keep you in the loop. After this week, regular meetings will be on Tuesday evenings. More info on that shortly.
The single most important action this fall, of course, is to vote. Next most important it to help GOTV - Get Out The Vote - for November. There will be specific campaign-oriented activities, and training from Campus Camp Wellstone between now and election day. Everything that is planned is a great fit with GenerationDFA ideals, so let's take advantage of this opportunity to create a new coalition to help take our country back.
See you Thursday!

Fall Agenda
Linked to groups: Kalamazoo for Democracy
Dear Kalamazoo for Democracy Campaigners,The 2006 election will soon be upon us. While I've been very concerned about national level issues for most of my life, and particularly active since 2003, I'm never more struck than now about how all politics is local.
I'd like us to think about some local involvement during the next couple of months. I've spent a little time helping out with the Julie Rogers campaign for State Representative, and somewhat more time helping out with the Martin Glista for Judge campaign. This week, let's talk about what we can do, either as individuals or together, to focus on local campaigns that could make a real difference right here.
See you Wednesday!
Paul

Ms. Rogers is running against incumbent rep. Mr. Hoogendyk. She represents a significantly different approach to state government with a very different agenda. Ms. Rogers deserves our enthusiastic support.

There are many reasons to be optimistic about this upcoming
2006 election. The most important, of course, is that we're
building a base for 2008. But we also have many important local
races right here in our own area. And in Mr. Clark, we have a
dynamic, progressive candidate to stand up for our interests and
goals.
There's lots to do, and now's the time to start.
Onward!
Paul
P.S. April 5, of course, is the day of our April meeting. Hoping to see you at the Blue Dolphin, 7 pm.
