Hello Democracy for Chicago Members,

Sorry you have not really heard much from this group. Mike Blossom, Michelle Taufman and I started it as a way of promoting joint events among the Chicago area meetups -- and we do plan to do several joint events over the next year. In the meantime, however, I wanted to let everyone know about an event that is being planned by my meetup group, the Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA, that will let you help FOUR CANDIDATES at the same time! And FYI, NONE of these candidates are on the official Democratic slate ... so they all really need help from the grassroots, which is us.

Read on for details, and thanks for your interest in Democracy for Chicago.

===========
Meet candidates Debra Shore, Forrest Claypool and Martha Mills (and possibly Alexi Giannoulias) at 1:00 p.m. at the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway, Chicago, this Sunday, February 19. They will be speaking at a Volunteer Rally hosted by the Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA group.

All four of these exciting candidates have been endorsed by the Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA group, and after the rally we will be going door-to-door in the 48th and 40th Wards (Edgewater and west) in a massive flyering effort. This is our way of being the "boots on the ground" for these great candidates!

Who are these people you ask? Well ....
----------------------------------------------------------
Debra Shore - Link
Democratic Candidate for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District

Even though the Water Reclamation District affects the quality of our streams, rivers and groundwater, and controls an $800 million dollar taxpayer-funded budget, its Commissioners don't have experience in conservation. Debra's been a leader in a consortium of more than 180 public and private organizations that protect the natural resources of
our region. She launched Chicago Wilderness Magazine and has been a longtime volunteer restoring wetlands and woods in our area. She is uniquely qualified to spend your money wisely and to protect our most precious resource - water. **Debra Shore was endorsed by the IVI-IPO by a unanimous 81-0 vote of members present at the endorsement
session.

Martha Mills - Link
Democratic Candidate for Cook County Judge

Martha Mills started her career by spending four years in Mississippi in the 1960's working as a civil rights lawyer with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. She became the second woman from Illinois inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, served as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in the Juvenile Justice Child Protection Division, and was Chief Legal Council to the Treasurer of Cook County from 1999 to 2005. She is the Executive Director of
"Transforming Communities" a not-for-profit organization dedicated to violence protection. ** Put an outstanding, highly qualified civil-rights lawyer on the bench in Illinois.

Forrest Claypool - Link
Democratic Candidate for Cook County Board President

As Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District, Forrest Claypool transformed an agency described as "dysfunctional" by the Civic Federation and "a patronage system for employees, not citizens" by Friends of the Parks. Claypool wiped out large budget deficits, restored park facilities, and dismantled a vast patronage empire - resulting in lower property taxes even as record amounts of money were invested in neighborhood parks. Since joining the Cook County Board in 2002, Claypool has passed whistleblower legislation to ferret out fraud and successfully led the opposition to $300 million in tax increases proposed by Board President John Stroger. **Cook County controls $2.9 billion of our taxes. Lets bring real reform to County government. **Cook County controls $2.9 billion of our taxes. Lets bring real reform to County government.

Alexander Giannoulias - Link
Democratic Candidate for Illinois Treasurer

Alexi Giannoulias is Vice President and Senior Loan Officer of
Broadway Bank, which Crains's Chicago Business has ranked as the No. 1 Bank in Illinois for the past four years based on return on assets. It is the State Treasurer's job to protect and invest the taxpayers' money. Alexi knows how to make money work and pledges to make it work for the people of Illinois. Alexi holds degrees in both Law and Economics and serves on several Boards of Directors including the Community Bankers' Association of Illinois Legislative Committee, and
the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce. **As a successful community banker, Alexi Giannoulias is uniquely qualified for the office of Illinois Treasurer.

You don't have to live in the Wards to help out. We have 10,000 flyers to distribute, so we need you! Even if you are not usually "into politics" this is a fun one-day event that you can be involved in. For more information on the event and to RSVP go to:

There will also be sign-up sheets for going out to the 6th
Congressional District to help candidate Christine Cegelis win her primary fight for U.S. Congress. She is another great progressive candidate that the Edgewater/Rogers Park DFA group is supporting.

Hope to see you on Sunday -- and please do RSVP at:

Peace,
Sandra

P.S. If you can't make it on Sunday, we will be doing the whole thing all over again on Saturday, March 18, and on election day, March 21. We will need your help those days as well! Go to Link for more details.
