Democrats Need hard work

Written by: Rajen on Sep 6, 2008 12:18 PM EDT

By all accounts, this year is a Democratic year for the Democrats to win big in the election. With an over whelming majority of Americans dissatified by the direction this country is heading, an unpopular president, highest percentage of unemployment, rising prices of gasoline and grocery, unjustified invasion of a souvreign country losing over 4000 young men and women and spending billions of dollar, 47 million people with no health insurance, the Republican ticket is nothing to offer to solve these problems. And yet,  the Obama-Biden ticket is not doing as well as should be expected. Democrats cannot take it lightly. They need to work very hard.

1. Senator Barack Obama is still not well known to all voters, especially White men. We need to make his policies known to people.

2. All the voters of Senator Hillary Clinton have not signed up for Senator Obama. They have badly bruised. We must reach out to them and bring them back home.

3. Republicans have always used dirty tricks to win elections. This year is not going to be any different. We must develop a Raipd Response Team in line with the Bill Clinton' s Campaign in 1992 and fight back.

4. People are attracted by the charismatic personality of Senator Obama. They are inspired by his message of hope and change. But they are not yet sure of how he will bring the change in the country and meet the challenges being faced by ordinary people. Many people just do not trust his oratory.

5. Senator Obama has attracted a large number of very young people. That is remarkable, but we should not forget that these young people have apoor record of showing up at the polls. Senator Obama needs to balance these young people with more mature and seasoned political activists.

6. The ethnic minorities like Hispanics and Asians, older women and White workers still look at Senator Obama with suspicion. There must be a GREATER exposure of the Senator to these groups.

7. Senator McCain's pick of a woman for Vice President has energized his right wing base. We need to match it with the new enthusiasm of Democrats.

The Democrats need to work a lot harder to win this election. It will not be an easy task.

While I agree with everything you say, I know from experience the following counterpoints to your points:

1.  Force feeding people info about Obama is suspect.  Voters need to be curious enough on their own to seek out the info.

2.  If Hillary supporters don't see the danger of McCain/Palin, I doubt anything anyone would say could change their minds.

3.  Rapid response is fine as long as it doesn't escalate into a war of words.

4.  If people don't get Obama's gift of inspiration, I'm not sure they can be made to trust him.

5.  Not sure Obama can balance his campaign.  Those who show up show up.

6.  NA

7.  Obama has energized the Dems about as much as it can possibly be done.

There is too much hand-wringing going on about Obama not being where he should be in the polls right now. I don't know who it is that figures out who should be where but I can tell you the polls are anything but accurate at this stage of the game, especially since few of them tell us how many voters are still undecided. They can be cherry-picked by any MSM at any time to get the desired result.

I plan on doing some phone banking a week or two before the GE but not before. People who are planning on voting will do so without me bothering them. Many may have even already voted by mail by the time I call them but we will be only calling those who don't have a good record of voting regularly.

I have great confidence in our nominees. If they can't win, nobody can and this country will be on its way down the sewer for good. If voters can't realize that and we lose, they lose as well.

BO would leap ahead in the polls if he'd renounce his RW foreign policy and talk about peace, not more war; and if he promised to repeal the MCA, undeclare himself the Unitary Executive, close Gitmo, restore the original FISA and quit spying on us...there are a myriad of things he could do and promise if he'd listen to the people.

We are ruled by dispassionate corporations who keep our critters on a short leash.

He could also call the *war on terror* what it is. . . a neo-con fabrication to keep the country scared and themselves in power.

- repeating Republican talking points with just a grain of truth don't help

By Phil Specht on Sep 7, 2008 7:27 PM EDT

He can't be both a celebrity with Obama "fatigue" and an unknown. He has the best numbers among "white men" in ages.

The problem is that they are liars that continue to lie and we do need to keep speaking the truth to counter them. ("He will raise your taxes" as the prime example).

the evangelical wingnut wing has been turned on by their VP pick so we have to have the ground game to out work them

seashell, we are "ruled" only to the extent we let ourselves to be

- Obama is working his ass off ...

... and I agree with Rajen on the fact that democrats have to work harder to get Obama elected, rather than second-guessing him all the time like seashell does.

- Oboma...dance with the one that brung ya!

I think Oboma lost some steam when he started to play the center as McCain has tried to do. This country needs a leader who will energize people into voting, not take them down the road of miasma and apathy as past elections have done. If someone can electrify with speeches as Oboma can, he can tell people why the war is wrong and maybe they'll listen. I'm scared the democrats are going to turn him into another one of our brilliant losers who stand up only to stick their finger into the wind.

Seashell...I totally agree with you.  We've had 8 years of the "war president", I'm sure this country is ready for the "peace president."

I've said this before and everyone seems to think that advocating for peace means you're weak.  But what people fail to realize is that peace is much more difficult to accomplish and anyone who takes on peace is for more strong than someone who simply goes to war.
