Millions Watch Obama's Speech

Written by: DFA Staff on Aug 29, 2008 9:00 PM EDT

More people watching a politician than American Idol?

From the NY Times:

Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday as an estimated 38 million viewers watched on television, setting a new record for convention viewership, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Mr. Obama’s speech — a historic one given his status as the first African American nominee of a major political party — reached significantly more viewers than the comparable addresses in 2004. Coverage of John Kerry’s acceptance speech in 2004 had 24.4 million viewers; coverage of George W. Bush’s convention speech that same year drew 27.5 million. The audience estimate of 38.3 million means that Mr. Obama’s speech reached more viewers than the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final “American Idol” or the Academy Awards this year, the Associated Press notes

Now if all those people would just go VOTE...

When he called Obama a celebrity like Paris Hilton, McCain was probably totally missing the most significant aspect of what he was saying.

After last night at the convention, there's no point for anyone to deny that Obama has star appeal. He's certainly got great TV ratings. When people--young people--look at Hilton or Spears, they see empty souls. What McCain didn't think about was that when young people look at Obama, they see a great role model. They see an example of just what hard work and education can do for a person.

So while McCain meant it as a put down, celebrity simply means that the eyes are all on Obama and what those eyes see are hope and inspiration.

The world would be a much better place if we could all somehow help make out politicians celebrities.  All eyes need to be on candidates and our elected representatives.

Young people need to watch, learn and get involved enough to vote.  After that we all need to watch what the people we elected are doing.

Everyone needs to pay attention to government like they pay attention to sports figures, rock stars and movie stars.

- Politicians are people and as such many have clay feet.

The one's drawn to "celebrity" status more so perhaps. I'll take someone like Howard who is values driven.

- Gustav will come to a fork in the road and either hit the east end or the west end of the range.

If it is steered west it will sit in the gulf and drown Louisiana like Faye did Florida. Seek higher ground. Bulls eye looks to be Baton Rouge to me, I'm not sure what they do there with the hundreds of thousands from NOLA if the direct hit is west of NOLA. But even Mobile needs to be ready because the tail of the stationary front will pull it or push it, the NOAA cone is pretty wide. We should know in 24 hours.
