DFA is violating people's privacy

Written by: Frank Johnson on Nov 19, 2008 12:25 PM EST

Hello,

DFA is violating people's privacy by registering them with this site without their permission.  Today when I 'Googled' my real name this site appeared with a link to my empty blog.

My real name is not Frank Johnson.  I am writing to let you know that this site is automatically registering people that are on some list.  Although that is bad the wors of it is that this site appears as a link when a google search is performed.

I don't want my name with a link to this site to appear on Google when someone searches my name.

I've asked to have my name removed, but no action from DFA has occurred.

I can't believe that people that are so concerned about the Patriot Act would allow this to happen.

Please ask DFA to stop violating peoples privacy and stop the practice of automatically creating accounts for people that were on some list.

PS: The combination of my unique last name and zip code assures me they got my name from a list.

DFA does not automatically register anyone.

Anyone with a viewable profile on this website has signed up with us, selecting a password when they signed up.

Every account also has a "de-activate" option. It is under the user settings. Which can be accessed via your mydfa page.

(The account that posted this blog was just registered today so is probably not the account in question?)

"Anyone with a viewable profile on this website has signed up with us"

You are either misinformed or lying.  I never signed up with this site.

No, this account that I'm using is not the account in question.  Frank Johnson is not my real name.  I tried to remove the existing account by 'retrieving' my password (there never was one), and I tried using every email that I have and not one is registered with this site.

I can't de-activate my other account because I can't log in.

As I look at your words I see you said 'signed up with us'.  What does that mean?  Maybe during the presidential campaign I 'signed up' for some poll or something, but I NEVER INTENED TO GIVE PERMISSION TO ASSOCIATE MY NAME WITH THIS WEBSITE AND HAVE IT APPEAR ON THE FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE RESULTS FOR MY NAME.

You must know what you are doing is unethical.  Because someone chose during the presidential campaign to answer a poll or something like that, does not give you the ethical right to create an account on your website with their name.

DFA staff already explained (in the watercooler) how you must have created this account yourself *and* they have deleted that account at your request within 24 hours. What more do you want?

I'm all for calling out DFA when they deserve it, but I don't think they've done anything wrong here and you are just blowing this way out of proportion.

You had a great deal more privacy before you came here to widely publicize your alleged blown cover problem with this minnow sized outfit.  To be honest, no one here recognizes you outside of your professedly phony name.

I'll repeat what I said in the thread: *Anyone* who knows you by name and has your zip code could sign you up.  Unless your life has been so wonderful that you have zero enemies, I'd condsider that.  During my life time, I've had friends signed up for porn catalogues, flower catalogues, and Victoria's Secret.  Never happened to me, but DOES happen.  Take some deep breaths before you start flinging mud.

Tim Watson, BTW, is a member of the staff at HQ.
