Cook County State's Attorney - Voters beware

Written by: Trudy Zaja on Jan 21, 2008 2:30 AM EST

Linked to groups: Hanover Township Democrats & Independents (HanDI)

From Jesse Jackson Jr. on State's Attorney race:

"Voters beware. The historic forces who rob taxpayers and call tax opponents "racist" are now gearing up to keep control of […] the office of state's attorney. Voters must note who the Democratic machine is backing for this key post—and then reject him or her. A dinosaurus-erectus with the power to determine right and wrong, with the power to threaten, subpoena and/or indict people on trumped-up charges is more than most homo sapiens in Cook County can stomach."

For many people Cook County State's Attorney is one of those "down ballot" races that they don't pay much attention to. But as Congressman Jackson's words make clear, this is a very important race, Here are the six Democratic candidates for Cook County State's Attorney:

Anita Alvarez chief deputy for the current Cook County State’s Attorney
http://anitaalvarez2008.com/

Tommy Brewer an attorney in private practice in Evanston
http://webmonster.bluedomino.com/tommybrewer_website/Resume.html

Howard Brookins, Jr. two-term Alderman of the 21st Ward
http://www.brookinsforjustice.com/

Robert J Milan current Cook County First Assistant State’s Attorney
http://www.milan08.com/

Larry Suffredin Cook County board member

Tom Allen, five-term Alderman of the 38th Ward

Northside DFA has officially endorsed Larry Suffredin.
The link to the endorsment blog is
http://www.blogforamerica.com/view/23533...

Reformer Dick Simpson, who is UIC political science professor and former Chicago Alderman:

"In the Cook County state's attorney race, progressive Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin is running against Ald. Howard "Can't Pay His Rent" Brookins and Ald. Tom Allen, a party hack who has more patronage and campaign finance conflicts than one can count. Suffredin has promised to fight political corruption with a strike force that will target corrupt elected and appointed officials, government vendors and police officers. This is a novel concept in Cook County, the most corrupt county in the country. Suffredin is endorsed by unions, IVI-IPO, suburban Democratic organizations, nearly all Chicago North Side reform politicians and Secretary of State Jesse White."

To anyone watching the debate, just want to remind that all three of our candidates describe the subprime mortage mess as caused by "predatory lending practices".

The Repubs have and will continue to blame the borrowers for "making bad choices".

A fundamental difference ideologically. They will always blame the little guy.

I saw a copy of one of those loans' lending papers at a financial web site.  The part about the mortgage resets is in the fine print.

It should have been in bold print at the top and clearly explained and a signature required to confirm that the resets were explained.  Just for starters.

Also, the repackaging of these loans where they're turned into derivative instruments with arcane definitions of value is a practice that should never have been permitted....though I think we'll see a whole slew of legislation restricting, if not prohibiting this.  CDO, SIV, on and on.

btw, the buzzword for 08 will be CDS.....Credit Default Swap.

Jean Carnahan Endorses Obama

"While I know and admire all the Democrats running for president, I am convinced that Barack Obama is the candidate best able to unite our nation and restore our moral leadership in the world," Carnahan said in a statement to be released today.

She said Obama will be “a powerful force for change” and called him an “inspirational leader, who embodies the ideals of our democracy and the hopes of a new century.”

I am sitting here listening to Hillary talking about not putting bandaids on health care right now and how she is fighting for Universal Healthcare.  Excuse me if I am blind, but does this sound like Universal health care to you?

"-Americans can keep their existing private coverage or buy FEHBP."

"-Large employers will be ‘expected’ to provide health insurance or contribute to the cost of coverage."

"-Working families will receive a refundable tax credit, designed to prevent premiums from exceeding a percentage of family income..."

...buying private coverage or federal coverage is not universally providing coverage, just adding another insurance company called FEHBP.

...expecting employers to provide or subsidize our coverage is not requiring them to do so.

...giving us our own money back to give the same amount to insurance companies is like Bush giving us a $300 tax refund, and watching gas prices rise $600 a year.

Her claims of supporting Universal coverage is totally dishonest and misleading.

JE is winning hands down, when they give him time.

HC very aggressive, BO evades and rambles at times.  He reminds me of Kerry.  Didn't answer health care question in a coherent way..and hc and je jumped on him.

Actually, I think hc is doing a good debating job, holding bo accountable, esp. on health care.  All are good debaters  and I still think JE is the most clear, esp about the blacks being targets of the subprime fiasco.  and his Iraq pull out.

It is interesting when I was doing research on the candidates economic plans, it was clear where each one of the candidates have decided to focus on for things like tax relief:

Clinton: Upper middle-class

Obama: Middle class

Edwards: Poverty stricken individuals/families

ie:

Clinton:

-Extend the middle class tax cuts including child tax credit and marriage penalty relief, offering new tax cuts for healthcare, college and retirement, and expanding the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) and the childcare tax credit.

-Reform the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) –(no specific plan found)

Obama:

-Tax credit (cut) of $500 on first $8,000 of income

-Elimination of taxes on seniors with income less than $50,000

-Eliminate capital gains taxes on start-up businesses

Edwards:

-Raise the minimum wage to at least $9.50 an hour by 2012 and then indexing it.

-Triple the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for adults without children and cutting the EITC marriage penalty.

-Supports the Employee Free Choice Act to give workers a choice in whether to form a union without intimidation.

Stephen King turns 60, supports Obama for president

BANGOR, Maine -- Best-selling author Stephen King has turned 60, a milestone that forces him to accept that he's no longer middle-aged.

''I look the same as I ever did when I look in the mirror. I can still see the kid there. But people seeing you see someone who's older. I went to a movie theater, and the woman asked if I wanted my golden-ager discount. I asked how old you have to be for that, and she said 65. I said, 'Not yet, dear,' '' says King, whose new novel, Duma Key -- about a man whose life takes supernatural turns after he's injured -- hits bookstores Tuesday.

In an interview with the Bangor Daily News, King also said he is backing Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president.

''We need a big change,'' King said. ''It's an amazing thing to see the two front-runners be a woman and a black man. Obama has the least baggage of the two and is willing to try new things. It wouldn't be business as usual. Also it would do wonders for us in the world community to have a black man in the White House."

As far as his specific plans for raising minimum wage and indexing it, eliminating taxes on seniors with under $50K income, and eliminating capital gains on start up businesses is why I state that...these are generally groups of people below the 'line' of upper middle class.

...but you make a fair arguement ...

The economy is a sticky issue, and trade is even stickier.  We do not operate in a vacuum, rather within a global economy that we are increasingly finding ourselves (the people, not the companies) at a disadvantage.  Iseriously don't think anyone has a correct answer as to a perfect trade policy...and economics is a science of averages and balances and not concrete.

...I agree that all the candidates are deceptive on their health care plans.

I disagree.  It is deceptive to call something 'Universal' or 'Single Payer' when their plans do not even come close to those definitions.

The problem, as I analyze it, seems to be that too many compromises must be made with drug companies and health insurance companies in order to deliver a plan.  All of their plans do nothing to actually bring down the cost of health insurance.  Some do make an effort to reduce drug costs, and I love that Edwards would re-ban drug advertising, but all of them skirt around the issue of actual health insurance regulation and reform.

The point of something 'Universal' is to provide for everyone...like education.  Providing options to buy different plans is choice of how we will pay the same amount of money, not universal.

Dave, I agree that none of them have a sound plan that we, as progressives, would like to hear when it comes to healthcare coverage. The first one that says they would work to do away with insurance companies being able to write health insurance "plans" would be on the path to true healthcare coverage reform.

I know that Dennis K has said this, but sadly he is not on that stage.

I agree...but...realistically, I don't think it is possible to get rid of insurance comanies...but I hope I am wrong.  :-)

There can be a way for Single Payer insurance...to create a singular pool for insurers to participate that is run 'universally' by the government.  The way for true Universal health care is to eliminate insurance companies or relegate them to provide 'premium' insurance only...and have our tax dollars go toward a great care, fair, relaible and  trustworthy.  If we pay $100/mo. now for health care on average, our costs would probably be reduced by 30% and we would pay $70/mo. in taxes instead.  I use 30% because I believe that is the amount of our health insurance dollars that go toward advertising/marketing costs...correct me on that number if I am wrong.

Dave I have no idea how much big pharma spends on advertising or marketing but the biotech I work for spends the most on R&D. We don't advertise except in health professional journals and trade publications and it's not to the general public.

I do agree that those ads are not necessary at all. Quite frankly it's my opinion that they confuse the general public.

I don't think it's possible to do away with insurance companies, but the government absolutely can regulate how they write the health care portion of their business, as your example cites.

Take the profit the insurance companies make as well as their operating costs away and health care could be affordable to all...insurance cos. must be out of the picture for a truly universal program to work imo. Take away our elected ones special health insurance and have them survive on what the rest of us get and we'd probably get a pretty good plan.

The Upper Middle Class is definitely the minority, but consider this brief story:

15 years ago, I was campaigning in California to continue the existing highest tax rate  on the upper 2% of income earners.  The tax continuation would have netted over $2billion that would have gone toward schools and health care services.  One would think that when something is good for 98% of the people and only cost an additional 2% of the income of the wealthiest 2%, that 98% of the people would win hands down, right?

Wrong!  We lost that campaign with 68% of people voting to cut the taxes of the wealthy, and starve schools and health care for money.

Does that mean 68% of people think that they qualify or will qualify at some time in the future as the upper 2% of income earners?  I don't think so...personally, I think it was all about effective voter education and message delivery...but that's just me.

My comments: I love how Barack FINALLY gave Hillary some hell. Her body language spoke volumes. She was ticked and cornered. That's the authoritarian in her. She cannot be questioned just like Bush.

Edwards was unscathed though - I loved his question to Hillary when he asked if she would refuse lobbyists in her WH. She of course didn't answer and he said *I'll take that as a NO*.

Interesting to see who Obama voted with in the Interest rate cap. Even Lieberman voted for it.

I thought his explanation of why he voted "present" on a hundred or more bills in the Il. senate fell pretty flat. He said that there were things in the bills he thought could have been different. Not hard to find something you might want different in any bill. Looks like another case of not wanting to be identified with any position, in most cases.

mary, yes! Did you see the look on her face when she threw out the slumlord line? It just dripped of meanness and "how do you like that?" smarminess. She made herself look pretty bad there.

I don't hear or see that in Barack. He's being firm yet cordial - shows composure under adversity. I like that in a president.
