Stewardship & Education Assistant with Sierra Foothill Conservancy

Sierra Foothill Conservancy: Sierra Foothill Conservancy (SFC), a local land trust serving the foothill portions of Fresno and Madera counties and all of Mariposa County, was founded in 1996 with the mission to conserve open space and protect wildlife, ranching, and natural beauty for present and future generations. In ts 13 years of service, SFC has protected over 16,000 acres of open space and working landscapes through the use of fee title purchases and conservation easements. SFC is a well known organization throughout the Sierra-Cascade Region for its significant land conservation achievements.

Program Description: SFC has protected over 6,000 acres of land with conservation easements in Mariposa County. SFCs’ Conservation Easement Stewardship Program includes documenting properties and building land stewardship relationships with landowners. Guided by area experts, our Mariposa Educational Program provides Mariposa and surrounding communities with opportunities to learn about and engage with their natural environment.

Position Description: The Stewardship and Education Assistant will work with the Mariposa Program Manager in the Mariposa office located 40 miles south west of Yosemite National Park. The main responsibilities of the AmeriCorps Member will be to assist with the Mariposa Conservation Easement Stewardship Program and the Education Program. This will include assisting with baseline documentation, ecological assessment and monitoring of properties, and recruiting volunteers to assist with monitoring and assessment. The Stewardship and Education Assistant will work in the Mariposa Education Program recruiting volunteers, coordinating hikes and classes, and developing educational partnerships with area schools.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Background or strong interest in sciences and/or education

2) Experience coordinating groups and events

3) Proficient in basic Microsoft Office programs

4) Able to effectively communicate with people from various socio-political, cultural, and educational

backgrounds

5) Able to successfully handle multiple projects

6) Able to take initiative and work both independently and as a member of a team

As you may know, the Sierra Nevada Alliance is recruiting applicants to become AmeriCorps Members in the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) for the 2009 program.  SNAP AmeriCorps members serve one-year (Jan-Dec 2009) with a Sierra nonprofit or agency to conduct and lead projects on habitat restoration, ecological or watershed monitoring, and/or environmental education.  This is a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable experience in environmental organizations while working on key environmental issues facing communities in the Sierra Nevada.

Responsibilities & Projects
will include environmental education, habitat restoration, and ecological monitoring. A living allowance and health care is provided during your year of service.

Placement Locations: AmeriCorps Members will be placed with a Sierra-based Conservation Group/Agency around the region. There are 27 open positions and they will be located throughout the Sierra Nevada region at approximately 20 organizations.  A complete description of open positions will available in early to mid September 2008.

Applicant Requirements:
· Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the U.S.
· Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED (higher education degrees are highly recommended).
· Must be a minimum of 18 years or older.

Necessary Skills and Qualifications
Ability to work with local community members, conservation groups and agencies.
Experience organizing events
Skills facilitating and/or participating in group meetings
Ability to lay out work tasks, identify resources, focus work and complete tasks on time
Strong writing skills
Public speaking and outreach skills
Independent, highly motivated, and ability to meet deadlines with limited supervision
Passion for the natural environment
Proficiency using personal computers and internet
Ability to travel in the Sierra
Physical ability to perform strenuous activities at high elevations

Compensation and Benefits
Full-time AmeriCorps Service positions for 11.5 months. Beginning January19, 2009 and concluding December 31, 2009. 
AmeriCorps Members will receive up to 340 hours of technical, ecological and skills-development training throughout the year. 
AmeriCorps Members will receive a monthly stipend of $1200 and standard health insurance. 
AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 will be granted upon completion of the program for use on existing qualified student loans or future higher education expenses.
